Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 275

The way I see it, it's almost a sign that if you killed off the entire home page, it'd make little to no difference. And of course, XD at the massive reject of the Gamespot stuff.

Today's poll is interesting, especially because 500 is probably a conservative estimate for the ps3.

It could potentially be as high as $700, but the most likely of prices -- despite how much of a loss it puts Sony at -- would be the $500 in today's poll.

And it was submitted be none other than that fun-loving whore, Ulti.

Considering the first Blu-Ray player is being sold this June at 1,800 dollars, I'd say it's a safe bet to say PS3 will be at least 500 bucks. My personal guess is 600, granted 1,800 is the consumer price, but it still has to be amazingly expensive to make, now add on all the other actual gaming features the PS3 will have, and it makes it even more expensive. Then we all know they'll sell for a loss on it, and by awesome guesstimation I come to $600 US.

I see nothing wrong with retiring champions. With Link, Cloud, and Sephy out of the field, the winner was actually up for grabs. Even 3/4 of the final four wasn't a sure bet.

It was a nice one year thing, just because it added so much more excitement to it... actually I'd like it if Clinkeroth just stayed retired and Mario stayed in, because I could potentially see someone beating him, not that I'd bet against him, I'd really like to see him face Sonic, that's for sure.

If Mario were to be retired, I'd have to throw my support for the championship behind...well, Sonic, predictably. Not that I'd have much confidence in him beating a few particular opponents (SAMUS), but I wouldn't be able to handle picking someone else to win the contest and then have my preferred character win *cough*Crono>Mario*cough*. Hey, if he could get his head out of his ass for his next-gen games, it could happen...imagine that...

...dear God, please let Sonic win a contest.

I know the issue of tag team tournaments has been brought up before, but iirc, there's always an amount of hostility towards it. If the main gripe with the contest is that it's predictable, and people say that tagteam would be the same, wouldn't it at least be different by being something different?

It's something I know we've discussed before, but worthwhile in pursuing for new ideas.

Exactly. If Mario gets retired, it's lame. But if Clinkeroth stay retired and Mario repeats, that's even lamer. I liked the TOC idea last year, but now it's time to scrap it.

Bingo. Sephiroth and Mario are on equal footing as champions: absolutely meaningless. For them to be treated differently would be a farce, and for the Samuses and Cronos of this world to join them would be farcical.

I personally think it could serve to make some huge upsets. Sure we'd have a general idea of where teams stood, but if you get a similar fanbase team versus a team with two completely seperate fanbases, even if the first may be stronger 1 v 1, the latter may prove strong enough.

Well, I'd like it if Mario were removed, then the winner of the Clinkerothio-less brack would face Mario. The winner of that faces Sephy, who would then face Cloud, who would face Link. That way we can still see how everyone compares, but still giving others a shot at the title.

How about an elite and fodder between two midcarders, assuming none of the fanbase overlap enough to make a real difference? Would they vote for the team with the character they like best, or vote for the other team because they like both characters? I honestly have no idea, not only how I'd predict, but how I'd vote.

Agreed, hell if people don't know who they'd vote for, just imagine how difficult it would be to predict. I'd love it personally... especially since X-Stats couldn't be made off of it. Well, they could, but they wouldn't be any good for future years.

The best part is that for a tag team, we have no idea where the "tipping point" might be. Take the bracket I made up a little while ago, which featured (3) Ganondorf and (6) Aeris (or 6/11, if you want to think of it that way) as a team. Could they beat Snake and fodder? Gdorf could arguably do it alone, so I say yes. How about Sonic and fodder? Aeris got 47% on him by herself; could Ganondorf supply the extra 3%/3,000 votes to tip the balance? And if they could against Sonic, why not Mega Man? And Crono didn't beat the Blue Bomber by much, so why not him, too? That's where I think it becomes interesting. And the seeding is generally inaccurate enough to allow for two midcarders to be paired together (imagine, if you will, Magus/Knuckles as a team).

Of course, if you throw Clinkeroth into the mix, it doesn't matter who's paired against them. But I would like to see Link/Mario vs Cloud/Sephiroth...

Going solely by X-Stats:

LoZ > FF
LttP > FF6
FF7 > OoT
WW > FFX

3 out of 4 are direct matches, and the only one that can be considered debateable (for SpC2k4, at least) is WW > FFX--though I'll take FFX handily every day of the week, thank you very much Starcraft.

I'll still take Zelda overall, though. The fanbase should be split apart enough with LttP and OoT alone to give it the nod, and it certainly seems to have the brighter future as of late.

I would think so. Link's got to be very close to the top of most people's preferences, and I don't think that two reasonably seeded teams (we wouldn't see anything like Mario/Crono vs Sephiroth/Fodder, I would guess) would be able to overcome that. Especially when each character individually is predicted to get, at most, something like 40% against him. Jay would be dead weight, sure, but I don't think it would actually hurt Link.

I think it really depends on the team. Aeris/Ganon is a pretty overpowered team, but I do think a team on that level would have a good chance against Link/x and Cloud/x. The problem with the Aeris/Ganon team is that either half the team gets SFFed by Cloud, or half the team gets utterly obliterated by Link.

would people vote for a Link/JS team over any other just because Link's in it?

Link/JS team would be almost the same as if Link didn't have a partner. Nobody knows who Jay Solano is so he draws neither votes nor anti-votes.

What would you guys think of the 4 champions going solo as a sort of handicap and then making them the first seed in each division? It probably won't do much since they are likly to be paired with the weakest of fodder, but most casuals shouldn't realize that. Mario does kind of get screwed by this though.

Sephiroth and Mario are on equal footing as champions: absolutely meaningless.

Except that Sephiroth is actually championship worthy, despite the fact that his was the Villains Tournament. They're not quite on equal footing. Sephiroth is quite the notch above. Mario had everything (and I mean everything) in his favor going into his match with Sephiroth. Mario was looking stronger than he's ever been before. Sephiroth looked vulnerable after struggles with Ganon and Bowser.

End result? Mario wins ONE update ALL day (and by a measly 7 votes) and ties another. Again, I know that you don't want to give him credit just because he can't beat Cloud or Link, but he's a lot closer than anybody else, and 4th place isn't close to him either. Sephy would've owned SC2K5 like nobody's business if he had been in it, and I would've called it legitimate. Don't hold it against him because he's not QUITE as dominant as Link and Cloud.

In summation, the tournament Sephiroth was placed in was awful, but nevertheless, he is worthy of being called champion.
