Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 275

Those numbers never have or will mean anything. I'd be stunned if we didn't see the next generation go PS3 > 360 > Rev, but with a smaller gap between Sony and Microsoft than in the last generation. The opinion of GameFAQs isn't going to change that, and it never has.

By the way, I'm just about done plugging the Spring 2005 numbers into my lists, and for how easy that contest supposedly was, the prediction percentages are pathetic.

That's what every damn analyst on the planet says, too, and frankly, it's just irritating. I'm not going to look back and find any stories, but when psp was released, there was all sorts of hype of crushing the ds and what-not. And it never did. Ds is huge in Japan, here, everywhere, etc. It bothers me that people automatically are giving the crown to the ps3 when its price could be 9 billion dollars, still crediting the xbox360 when its launch was unspectacular, and writing off the revolution basically because the gc was unimpressive and it doesn't have the useless multimedia functions the other two do.

Am I expecting Nintendo to be first or it not to be Sony > Xbox > Nintendo? Not really, but.....people underestimate the rev to hell ,when it really has a lot of appealing features, that don't cost $400 at that.

I'm finally done archiving the Spring 2005 Contest into my lists. I can't remember whether or not top tens for that contest have been posted yet, so they're coming up in the next two posts.

Only one mroe contest to archive, and then I'm finally caught up. From there I might actually be able to get the site fully updated before Spring 2006. Who knew? =p

The domination by Sephiroth even with him being anti-voted to hell in his final two matches was ridiculous. All six of his matches saw him make the highest votal list, and only the finals missed being on the easiest matches to predict list -- and that match came in 12th place.

Seph's domination wasn't unfair, he was by far the most popular cahracter in that contest. He should have been handed the title automatically, really, since he had no chance of losing.

I have a weird question.

I was looking at the GameFAQS Top 50 today and for some reason Metal Gear Solid 2 had popped onto the list at #37.

For the five months I've been archiving the list I've never seen the game on the list at all. Hell, Metal Gear Solid 3 isn't even consistently on the list, and isn't on the list today.

Does anybody know if there's any reason for this sudden jump? The only thing I could think of was that suicide claim on the MGS2 Social Board, but why would that cause the FAQ hit count to jump?

Yeah, has to be suicide related.

And why all the Top 50 archiving? I used to do it myself, but that was back in the day, when it gave me an edge in the Top Ten FAQ of the Year contests.

Everyone and anyone who commits suicide is a whimp, and I have no respect whatsoever for anyone who does it. I'm not trying to disrespect the guy or anything, but everyone has it rough. Unless you're terminally ill and can't stand the pain, there is no good reason to kill yourself.

My mother had terminal cancer for three years and never resorted to killing herself to escape from it, and that really stuck with me. These kids who whine about their lives being so bad that they have to escape from it all piss me off to know end. Be a ****ing man and suck it up.

I know Nintendo's said they're not going to compete in areas that sony and micro are, chiefly multimedia, shiny graphics, but it's the next, sort of logical, step that people take to say they're not competing at all that's irksome. I really don't think the next generation for nintendo will be like this one. The Rev is too different/interesting for that.

Also, I'm sort of against the casual hate, that pops up in terms of what games they buy, as well as prediction percentages and what not. I'd like to think that people wouldn't buy games they didn't like (and consistently buy them), so perhaps there's more merit to popular games than we give credit for. ie, why would people crap?

Not all illnesses are physical, man. Sometimes the sickness in one's head is more than they can bare. Frankly, anyone crazed enough to kill themselves is undoubtedly sick in a way most people can't understand. Normal people simply don't have it in themselves to do themselves in.

You would have gotten blasted for saying that in the suicide related topic on this board. Why everyone jumps up and defends suiciders, I have no idea. The guy even said himself in his last post that he knows it makes him a coward.

BTW, he said his reasons were because of money, school, and, as a consequence, housing. I rest my case there. How many people DON'T have those problems?

I haven't got a clue as to whether or not the Rev can kick it up enough to get the respect it'll probably deserve, but I know NIntendo isn't going anywhere. They throw out more million sellers than any other publisher and nothing is changing that. What they need to do is strengthen their partnerships with Capcom and Namco (who they are on really good terms with currently) and win over Konami and S-E (both of which you can tell really want to make it work with the big N. See: DDR w/ Mario + FFCC) once and for all. Of course, if they threw some money Rockstar's way and steal the next GTA it'd be such a big deal they might come out on top after all. Not that they'd do that...

Well in your case, you get blasted for saying that EarthBound and SMRPG suck =p

Come to think of it, I don't remember ever reading why you dislike SMRPG.

Wesker/Kefka was my usual "Hey I have no chance of winning pick so I may as well make 1 crazy upset" I'm so pissed I made that. The others though, I'm fine with, especially since it was only my second contest predicted.

The only one of those I can blame you for is Sigma/Andross, and it was the closest of the three, ironically enough.

Nope, Playstation is king around here, even with the popularity of Nintendo's characters. Still, it makes you kinda wonder how no PS2 games actually made the top 10 of GameFAQs' top 100 games.

anyone surpsised at today's poll result?

Not really. It's the same thing as every poll of a similar nature, ever.

By the way, I might need some assistance calling the shots for the Bridget/Sabin match in the rally tournament. It's just ready to go overboard.

Guru Contest closing soon(ish) - Writeups or not, get those Top Tens in!

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=25733170

And as long as I'm here, might as well check that Rev Day Vote.

Morning - Leaning Towards a Rev: 50.84%
Final - Leaning Towards a Rev: 50.59%

Pretty consistent.

The "Falcon Kick the SC2k5 bracket up a notch: The Captain Falcon Nomination Drive." topic motivated me to check something out about the success of SSB/M: I'm going to post the record of combined wins and losses of every character in SSB, and then do the same for SSBM. I'm also leaving out matches that are between two SSB/M characters. So, here's what I got:

SSB:
2k2: 15-4
2k3: 12-5
2k4: 13-5
Villian: 1-1
2k5: 13-5
This totals to ----> 54-20 = 72.97%

SSBM:
2k2: 15-4
2k3: 14-8
[Game: 4-1]
2k4: 15-5
Villian: 8-3
2k5: 18-6
This totals to ----> 70-26 = 72.92% [74-27 = 73.27%]

(matches thrown out: Mario/DK, Mario/Link, Pikachu/Fox, Bowser/Ness, Link/Fox, Bowser/Yoshi, Link/Samus, Link/Ganon, Yoshi/Luigi, Bowser/Mario, Link/Yoshi, Mario/Ness, Samus/Ganon, Kirby/Bowser, Mario/Samus)

As an interesting note, of the matches I threw out that had a SSB/M character against a character solely from SSBM, the record is 3-3 (Bowser/Ness, Bowser/Yoshi, Link/Ganon, Bowser/Mario, Samus/Ganon, Kirby/Bowser). Not that that stat is of any importance, especially since the expected winners of each of them brought it home, but it's worth a look anyways.

Well, I always like reading the news headlines, and the Top Ten feature probably isn't going to last forever, either. I wouldn't have even included it if it's not a mainstay. Also...today on gamefaqs almost never has anything interesting; don't know why anyone would vote for that.

I voted news if only b/c potd was a guaranteed win.

The first choice I looked for on the poll was something about the boards/forums. When I saw there wasn't one, I quickly decided on PotD.

I voted Today on GameFAQ's because every once in a while it'll actually announce something I care about, the PotD is better, but it's not as useful.
