if Serge was above the fodder line, I think that's a successful new entrant. Serge's design is great in my mind; the only problem is that his game isn't as popular. still, it sold something like half a million copies, more than TOS or Xenogears or Xenosaga. he deserves a shot.

I'd take Zidane over Serge, too. But I think Zidane is stronger than the stats indicate, so that probably means less coming from me.

As far as people you have selected as not fodder...I disagree with the selection of Akuma. Sure, Street Fighter characters have done well, so far, but....They've all been Street Fighter 2 characters. And none outside of Ryu, and Ken in the first contest have been impressive. I'd wager that it's the earlier Street Fighters that attract the voters, and Akuma didn't have any recognition until Alpha 2. I think he'd suffer quite a bit because of that, and end up weaker than most people expect.

as far as Fei and Citan go - i say that Fei maybe, MAYBE has a chance. you're right that Xenogears did outperform Pokemon by a healthy margin, but im' just not convinced. Citan, though, just doesn't have the casual appeal to even beat Lloyd or Vyse, though. at least Fei looks like a tough guy, but Citan just looks like a doctor.

The thing is, I don't think those later Capcom fighting games are enough to propel someone above the fodder line, even if they're casual favorites. I mean, look at Strider. He's a huge fan favorite in the MvC games, AND has his own classic platformer, and yet he still barely beat Raziel when MvC2 was more popular. Akuma is probably a bit stronger than Strider, but... Only a bit.

Cyko's getting his wish granted - the one-nomination wonder is taking down Fei! Something tells me Zelos could be in for a tough fight tomorrow, because he too is against a popular character that was severely overlooked in the nomination stage. And from SSBM to boot. And while I'm at it:

Kratos did, and by a significant amount to boot. I think that if the ToS fanbase doesn't support Lloyd just because he's the lead (and a rather useless one at that), there's probably room for one or two other standout supporting characters, namely Zelos and Sheena.

I would take World over RE4 easily, as I feel it's the strongest game of the ones I listed.

the others, I'm not so sure about. I know I'd take RE4 over MGS3, and probably Halo as well. I'm not convinced that KH or FF8 will be strong in a game contest, especially not after KH's disappointing performance against SC (Soul Calibur, that is.) Zelda 1 may suffer from being too old - I never hear people talk about it. as mentioned though, it does have the Zelda name. (I'd love to see Zelda vs. a well-known modern game, just to see how it would hold up.)

that leaves the Metroids, GTA and SOTN. SM got SFFed to hell and SOTN is behind GE/OOT, which I feel is pretty significant SFF. GTA:SA is untested.

In my bracket, all of those games would go over RE4. I'd be most hesitant with The Legend of Zelda (as I imagine many others would be), but that's mainly due to the twenty years separating the games.

Mario has been embarrassed. Link has opened up a 25% vote gap on him. The #2 Nintendo mascot is destroying #1. Given the outcomes of recent polls, today's result is hardly surprising, though if you'd told me a few months ago that Link would easily dispose of Mario in a popularity contest with a 100,000-voter base, I would have been very skeptical. But Link has proven himself head and shoulders above Mario, just as he did Sephiroth, and by proxy, everybody else in the tournament.

Mario. Cloud Strife. Solid Snake. Crono. Sephiroth. MegaMan. Six big names. Along with Link, it would not be unfair to label these the "elite seven" of the tournament, adding the impressive Blue Bomber and dark-horse Eastern champ to the five names who so clearly stood out on the odds list published two months ago. None of these seven was ever defeated by anybody from outside the group, and whenever two of these seven clashed, the result was a close battle. And it's far to say that any match within the Elite would have been similarly close.

Bah.

I'm 95% sure "Noble Nine" officially began during the 2k3 Elite Eight evolving from "the Elite Eight + Crono" after Crono lost to Mario. It was still obvious that Crono was still about equal to Mario, so you couldn't leave him out of the equation. The whole concept was indeed an extension of Super Seven though.

Hey Ulti, congrats on getting another top 10 list on the front page. But your Dragon Warrior writeup has some serious holes in it. First off, Dragon Warrior didn't introduce the 2D world map - Ultima 1 had a 2D map in 1980, and plenty of other RPGs had done the same before Dragon Quest showed up in 1986. Second, Dragon Warrior didn't invent random battles - again, they showed up in computer RPGs well before Dragon Warrior. Third, Dragon Warrior didn't invent the save feature - Dragon Quest in Japan was released using a password system! I don't know what the first game to use saves was (even ignoring the fact that computer RPGs had them all along), but Zelda had battery backup saves in 1987, well before Dragon Warrior came to the US with saves in 1989.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - RE4. It's close, but I'd pick GE over MGS3 more easily than I'd pick it over RE4, so RE4 wins >_>

Halo - Halo. Pretty much a tossup.
GTA: SA - GTA: SA. I think it'll be stronger than VC and close to Halo.
Kingdom Hearts - RE4. KH seems to have lost its luster.
Metroid Prime - RE4. Nintendo boost or not, the only GCN games I'd pick over RE4 with any degree of certainty are SSBM and WW.
Final Fantasy 8 - RE4. I think FFVIII will be far enough below FFX that RE4 can win fairly easily.
Super Metroid - RE4. Nintendo boost or not, I doubt SM got SFFed THAT badly against LttP.
