Here's my 2006 contest wish list (yeah, 5 days late...):
- CATS winning a match (preferably against Gordon Freeman)
- Aeris returning to the summer contest
- Somebody beating Link (okay, realistically that means Cloud beating Link)
- A good spring contest
- At least one suspenseful match between top tier characters
- Some kind of surprising results
---
SC2k5 and SpC2k5 First Vote Champion
Nominate Aeris for SC2k6.

But Freeman did well on Leon, Karma Hunter. Kefka lost to VERCETTI!
<_< however Kefka would use oldschool hax and win to barely beat
GFNW.

- CATS winning a match (preferably against Gordon Freeman)
CATS will win, but not against GF.
- Aeris returning to the summer contest
She will, as a 6 seed or an 11 seed.
- Somebody beating Link (okay, realistically that means Cloud beating Link)
Sephiroth will beat Link if he gets the chance. <________<
- A good spring contest
It'll be another Games one where Starcraft is exposed and the Super Seven is broken.
- At least one suspenseful match between top tier characters
Mario/Crono will be rekindled with a fury.
- Some kind of surprising results
See above, also Solid Snake will win the contest and yes I've been talking out of my ass.

ooh, we do get a PSP poll - I guess these are going in alphabetical
order. it's obviously Lumines vs. GTA, with GTA likely to cruise to an
easy victory.

An interesting perspective on CJ/Pac: the unadjusted stats show CJ
getting 49.55% on Pac-Man. Now, from there, where do you think there
was more SFF: Ness/Mario, or the combination of Mega Man/Yoshi and
Yoshi/Pac-Man?

the latter. Ness got hit hard, but Pac got double-SFFed.
I don't think stats would really help in that match, though - Pac-man is a weird bastard. I hesitate to assign a value to him.

Am I the only one shocked by Lumine's performance? I was honestly
expecting a performance in the neighborhood of 80% from Liberty City

It'd honestly be a very difficult choice, especially due to the large
fall Vercetti took with the release of SA. (At least I assume that's
the reason.) Decidedly, Pac-Man has some more bracket breaking
potential if he just gets the right draw.
In other news, the initial post for the contest's nomination phase is ready... I'll put it up later this morning.

Y'know, a girl should really consider a change of career when getting shot out of a mass driver at hypersonic speeds seems mundane.

MGA not being on there is a crime. What the heck is with CJC and not
putting MG games on the end of the year polls? First MGS3 now this...
My unpopular opinions... depends on what you'd call unpopular. If you mean unpopular by mainstream standards:
Halo is among the most repetitive games ever made
All of the GTA games are horrible
FPS's in general are overrated
If you mean unpopular by GFAQs standards:
Fire Emblem is a much better RPG series than Final Fantasy
Fire Emblem 5 is among the hardest (not to mention I think it's the best) game ever made
MGS3 doesn't get enough credit for being as great a game as it is
The Xbox360 is probably the biggest waste of money ever on the market right now
---
14-5 (6-0), 55GF, 22GA, Skyline conference champs, first and only NCAA tournament bid, go 1999 Valiants!!

[We need] A good spring contest
Sp2K5 was a pretty good contest for only 32 contestants, barring the matches involving characters from earlier contests (which meant crappy semi-final/finals). Sp2K4's Division 128 was the best division in any contest EVER, though the rest kinda stunk for the most part. So...I guess neither of them were FULLY good, but the only contest that was close to being good across the board was SC2K2, in my opinion.
At least one suspenseful match between top tier characters.
Let's hope it happens...SC2K4 lacked them, but SC2K5 did have a couple (but my no means "epic").
Some kind of surprising results
SC2K4 was really the only contest that lacked in that, but all others have...not a lot to worry here. But, I'd prefer surprising results involving the Noble Nine. -_-
---
"Ah, a party! We haven't had one of those. It could be fun! So...what is a party?"
"Well, you drink punch and eat CAKE! ...I think."

Heh, I've heard some of the hardcore RPGers (like utopianh) note it for its difficulty. They say it makes games like Unlimited SaGa, 7th Saga, and FF2j look like cake.

Personally, Sp2k4 was my favorite contest of them all - admittedly, I wasn't on the board in 2k2 or 2k3 (although I did follow both). But Sp2k5 was my least favorite because I didn't care much about the characters. If we just had another game contest in the spring I'd be quite happy.

Squall/Vincent and Sonic/Mega Man were both good matches, but like you say, what we really want are epic battles.

Even 2k4 had Sora vs Ryu... but I'm hoping for more than one surprising result, and like you say, preferably involving the Noble Nine. Something totally ridiculous like Snake beating Sephiroth - that would be awesome. I want that "anything can happen" feeling.

I don't want one either. The winner will still be obvious, this generation isn't over yet and there are several games that will be out in one year that could be a force to be reckoned with. I say we wait a year.

Why not have one next year too?
Also, since we've seen Link win it all three times now, I suppose it's time to close shop for the character battles too...right?

That's not my reasoning at all, I'd just rather see a tag-team
character contest, though a games contest would be better than none at
all.

I'll agree that a tag-team contest would be cool simply because of how
crazy it seems (that and the GFA tourney has been fun, too), but I'll
still take a second game tourney over a tag-team tourney for now.

Yeah, it would be perfect for a small contest too, 64 characters, 32
teams, that is if Ceej wants to keep Springs down to 32, Link+Fodder
may just not be a lock when going up agaisnt two decently popular
characters.

I wonder if it'd be anything like GFA; there, Mario and KoaC are great
contenders (at least strong) and looked to be the favorite of the
contest...yet they didn't look so impressive against Dante/Tetris
Block. I'd mention some other things, but I cannot get GFA to load
anything other than the front page the past several days.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect a Mario/KoaC combo to do as great here, though it would be intresting to see.

I don't care for tag-team contests. I always look at GFA's poll and say "uh.... who the hell am I supposed to vote for?"

Aga has forsaken us over at GFA; he's too busy with the 10 year olds at
NintendoFrienDS. I think Moltar has taken over a lot of the contest
duties.

The team you like more, duuuuh. =P
I've found it to be weird in matches like today though; over there, they have Solid Snake and Servbot against Goemon and Ness. I am completely indifferent against Servbot and Goemon, so it suddenly became Solid/Ness to me, and Solid's easily my favorite of the two. I've also noticed I'll usually vote for a team that has two character I care about over a team with one character I care about except if the one character is awesome.
---
Serious Reminder: Nominate Jay Solano in 2k6.
Why? He floats like a butterfly and stings like a...butterfly. Can't match grace like that.

nah, that's not what I mean - usually I like one character and dislike
the other, so I don't know if I'm supposed to vote for them, against
them or neither. tag-team contests are really gimmicky to me.

That's what makes tag teams interesting though -- not really
Link/Fodder against two midcarders, because Link is just too strong,
but something like (1)Snake/(8)Terra vs (3)Tifa/(6)Alucard. That's the
kind of tag-team match that would be interesting to me, and is even
seeded accurately.

Or (3)Magus/(6)Knuckles vs (2)Squall/(7)Geno, heh.

Guys, anything but the cookie.
I'd reluctantly take Tifa/Alucard in that match-up. If nothing else, Tifa would have a SFF-advantage over Terra in that match, making it almost two-against-one for Solid Snake.

I'd take Tifa/Alucard and Magus/Knux, but I really have no idea who would win either.

I'm with EC on that.
I think Imma make a tag-team bracket now, as a matter of fact...this is fun to think about.

in Tag-Team matches, I would take the two characters that have
differing fanbases (like Tifa-Alucard) as opposed to a team like
Kuja-Kefka or Cloud-Sephiroth. it would be a completely unpredictable
tournament, but the pairings just seem random and I don't know how
you'd determine them.

Determine them by seeding. Normally whoever you'd face in the first round would end up as your partner.

I suppose you could take SC2k5 and just pair them up:
Mario/Joanna
vs.
Ness/CJ
Zero/Ryu
vs.
Lloyd/Wesker
etc.

I'm tryin' to come up with teams by other means, I believe, though I ain't opposed to a good team that's made like that.

well, don't ask me to predict it - have you seen my GFA score? I think
I was on some serious chemicals when I made it, because I don't even remember picking half those people. only like one serious bracket has a worse score than mine.
