Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 272

(We already knew Frog was overrated, and if Magus, Tidus and Alucard has proved to be overrated, then why wouldn't Ganonforf also be it?)

You still have to have some kind of strength to blow out Frog like that. As far as Ganondorf is concerned, outperforming Bowser on Sephiroth and beating the hell out of Auron isn't proof enough of his strength? Unless you think Magus and Tidus would do the same against Ganondorf as they did in 2k3?

And to further add on to my last point about Ganondorf, look at Mario's rematch against Sephiroth compared to 2k3. Clearly, this is not 2k3.

Samus/Crono would be close. I'll take Samus, but I'd be surprised if Samus beat Crono worse than Mario did.

Wonder how there wasn't any loss of faith in Bowser and Ganondorf when they were SFFed, but now Samus suffers and people just kind of turn away, even when the two guys behind her had a dismal year compared to the standards they established.

Dismal year??? How so? Because their match-ups with Sephiroth? It's painfully clear that anything that went wrong in those matchups are all on Sephiroth!

A lot of people lost faith in Ganondorf after Link obliterated him in 2k4, Bowser not so much. The belief that a strong character is nearly immune to SFF used to be a lot more popular.

because one is SFF and one is rSFF. you actually think Samus would win 57-43 or whatever it projects to?

personally, I see Sonic and MM boosting up near Crono as opposed to Crono falling. considering the so-called Sonic and Nintendo boosts, that makes more sense to me.

Crono's never even faced Seph, and Megaman didn't since that KH debacle.

Against who? Could you be any less specific?

personally, I see Sonic and MM boosting up near Crono as opposed to Crono falling.

They're not mutually exclusive. Sonic boosted, and Crono and Mega had a slight proportional drop. It'd take a hell of a boost to get Sonic up to a static Megaman - heck, he boosted a lot already.

The much bigger question is, where he'll go from there, with a much raved about game and being featured in one that got universally dissed by professional reviewers (I'd rather wait until the immediate fallout is gone to judge how history will remember it, though).

Ganon would have a handful with Snake as-is.

Just a quick question: who here takes Knuckles over Shadow head-to-head right now?

There's no question that I take Knux now. I might have last year, even -- I took Kirby over Tidus and would have considered Kirby/Knux a tough match.

Samus did better against Frog than Crono did against Magus, Crono would stand no chance. Even worse, Crono peaked in 2k4, and Samus has MPH coming out before next Summer. We've seen how much help the DS was in 2k4.

I should mention that the 3D Sonic games are apparently really popular in Europe. That could be behind Sonic's boost.

As for Knux vs. Shadow, it would be close...but Shadow just had a new game, which will also undoubtedly be very popular in Europe, and that game is enough to tip the balance.

Last I checked, staying constant or barely moving at all does not constitute a downward spiral.

I wouldn't have hesitated to put Kirby over Knux. So obvious! Knux/Tidus or Knux/Shadow would have given me fits, but Kirby beats them all with ease, everyone knows that.W

*Still can't believe Kirby was the underdog going into his match with Tidus*

Knuckles/Yoshi would have been a close match with Yoshi having the small statistical advantage and the Nintendo > Sega mentality wouldn't have hurt him. Kirby's also been deceptively stronger than Yoshi the past two contests (maybe three? Not sure). Knuckles would have always kept it respectable with Kirby, but he wouldn't have beat him these past two contests.

Kirby > Yoshi > Tidus/Shadow/Knux is something I can believe. STH might change that a little, but at the worst I'd see it as Kirby > Yoshi/Shadow > Tidus/Knux and I'm having a hard tiem believing that, Tidus's 2k4 victory aside.

But going down DOES constitute a downward spiral.

You'd be nuts to call what Crono did this year as awe-inspiring as last year.

You'll forgive me if I don't buy that one of the worst reviewed "major" games this generation gave Shadow a boost. The game was received far worse than Sonic Heroes, which didn't help Shadow one bit, I might add.

But last year was his only real standout performance. The two before it he did manage to stay close to Mario (cheat votes aside they were still very close together) and the one after it Mario went nuclear. That has nothing to do with Crono who looks as strong as, or nearly so, as always.

However, Crono had four matches we could draw conclusions from before the one with Mario. We all know what MC and Vincent have done, and while I'm ready to give Crono the benefit of the doubt, it's only to a certain extent. Then you have Vercetti and Megaman, who give Crono at his 2004 level... until you realize both almost dropped matches they shouldn't have even been in position to lose.

But going down DOES constitute a downward spiral.

Except he didn't go down very much, if at all. A "downward spiral" implies that he went WAYYYY down, which he clearly did not.

You'd be nuts to call what Crono did this year as awe-inspiring as last year.

Eh, not his problem that his competition got boosted while he stayed relatively the same. Heck, I recall before SC2K5 that there were many who'd have called for Crono/Mega Man to be close and would have given the Blue Bomber the edge.

Yeah, because we don't happen to know for certain one of those matches had thouasands of fraudulent votes, right? And we don't also happen to know that the other one was (incorrectly) project by last years stats to be a losing battle, right? Seriously.

Saying Mega Man had no business even coming close to losing that match is giving Sonic too much credit?

Forgive me, I know Sonic has generally been considered the "weak link" of the Noble Nine in the past, but I think it's difficult to deny that he was a cut above his normal self in 2005. He was certainly as strong (if not stronger) than he's ever been.

Well, for starters, make that what you will, Conker projected Mega to be somewhere between adjusted and unadjusted, but a bit closer to adjusted, and that's smack-dab where he ended up being. Meanwhile, Diablo projected Sonic to kick unadjusted Megaman's ass, but to still fall short of unadjusted MM by some amount. Yet again, it's what ended up happening with Sonic just barely falling short of where MM ended up being. I'd like to think maybe this is where it stops being conjecture.

Well then, good. To recap, I'm splitting the responsibility 60:40 in Sonic's favor. He's boosted a lot (so did Knuckles, after all), but I'm not ready to let Megaman, and by extension Crono, entirely off the hook either. They haven't convinced me, Sonic did. And Sonic could reasonably clinch sixth place next time if the other two make a big step further on the path of forgotten heroes.

According the XS, the is Mega Man's strongest year, and Sonic's strongest if you consider WDF. I don't see what the problem is with Crono almost losing to either of them.

The problem is, Clinkeroth haven't disputed enough match for us to get a good picture on them. It's considerably better if we use a reference from the main bracket. I'm partial to 2003 Snake, myself.

10 seconds. Anyway, 2003 = 2004 for Snake, we know that much. But 2003 = 2005 at least makes sense, given the matches he's disputed against Zelda and Mario. Besides, who said standards needed to be accurate to the hundredth?
