Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 272

Actually, I don't really know that many people that do. At least, not people my age.

I've honestly never smoked, myself, though I too expected the number to be higher. I guess with the younger demographic and all...that and it's the Pokemon of real life.

Well I don't know how it is in America, but here in Sweden it's very unusual for a guy to smoke. And to be honest, I don't see the reason to smoke.

Nor can I. Heh, on Thanksgiving night, I was at my grandparents' house...and my grandmother smokes like a freight train. She smokes several packs of cigarettes a day, and she's smoked since high school (and is now around 85 years old). We were talkin' about who was gonna sleep where, and my grandma volunteers to sleep elsewhere to open up her bedroom...

...so I took the offer.

When I rolled over and started to sleep, I hugged the pillow up to my face...

...and, right then and there, I thought I was going to die. I am not convinced her pillows aren't stuffed with pure tobacco, heh. Anyways though, the smell was absolutely horrible (and it's not like the rest of the room was smoke-free, either), so I had a horrible night's rest...but not before throwing her four pillows off the bed. It was killing me; I've rarely ever smelled something so strong, and the smell of smoke really is awful.....

I was shocked at that at first.. then I remembered that the GF demographic is probably pretty young. no way would you get 2/3 people saying that of college kids and up.

I was shocked at how high the smoking rate is. I didn't think anyone was dumb enough to start smoking anymore, and GameFAQs is pretty young overall. Ask that a few years down the line, and all the people who said "Yes" will have died off.

Here's something to discuss. By next year Crono will be weaker.

I think he will or at the very least stay the same. This year Crono didn't gain like most years. I can see Crono going almost 50/50 against Mega Man next year.

He went almost 50/50 with Mega Man this year, too. He didn't win by that much. Still, taking Sonic over Mega Man and Crono will be appealing next year...

...Especially with my tendency to overestimate him.

Add to it new systems (at least the 360, maybe the PS3 and/or Revolution too), and that's a new younger fanbase being brought to GameFAQs. Newer gamers can only hurt Crono's chances, though that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be hurt next year.

They'd probably re-release it on the DS before they let people download it on the Rev.

I don't see why Square wouldn't let them.

Remakes for portables. I can see Square Enix letting some games that they aren't planning on remaking be downloaded. I could see them putting SMRPG on, and maybe Mystic Quest. If Nintendo will pay them to put them up for download, though, you could see a lot more.

New consoles don't necessarily result in a younger fanbase coming to the site. I really don't see the launch of the XBox 360 hurting Crono, at any rate.

Crono needs something. Anything. You can tell he reached his peak in 2004, thanks to the emu-wave of the preceding two years, but now he's starting to be... well, forgotten isn't the word for it, but whatever. He didn't look as solid as in 2004, even with The Boost he should've done a bit better on Mario. Not to mention a Megaman that seems to be suffering the same fate (along with both supporting casts, coincidentally enough). Sonic > Megaman > Crono does look appealing for next year, although I wouldn't touch it with a Masamune right now.

Solid Snake releasing with THE biggest game on what is likely to be THE biggest console at the time, reprising a starring role in his first major game since MGS1?

Unless the older look ends up doing more harm than good, it should at least keep the Noble Nine intact (assuming this comes out in Spring '06, which I write off as all but an impossibility). As for how much more it could do? Your guess is as good as mine.

You know, he probably would have had to fight for it in previous years had he went up against Mega Man or Sonic. We've just never seen those match-ups straight up, so we give the X-stats the benefit of doubt.

From: Slowflake | Posted: 11/30/2005 5:51:03 PM | Message Detail
I can't see that now. The best chance to do it would've been in 2003 and 2004 against Sonic, and the stats say he'd barely succeed.

I just wonder HOW Sonic managed to boost this year with the ever increasing number of people who think his series jumped the shark at some point in time

Exactly, the stats say as such, but just maybe it wouldn't have happened so easily straight up. As for Sonic, just being able to get a favorable matchup with Mega Man along with the demographic change are what I think caused it.

It's not that hard to believe that Sonic may have benefitted from the shift toward Nintendo. His remakes and ports on the GameCube have sold quite well.

It's not that hard to believe that Sonic may have benefitted from the shift toward Nintendo.

While this is probably somewhat true, it's hard to swallow simply because of the Nintendo/Sega history. Just the irony of it all, really.

While I'm thinkin' about it, Ulti, I may not have those polls for awhile. I thought I was gonna have alot of open time, and, uh...not so much. I'll have 'em eventually though, no worries on that.

Considering how well Sonic's games have sold on Nintendo systems (better than on PS2 or XBox, if I'm not mistaken)...I don't think it's a "hate" rivalry anymore, if it ever was. I know I loved 'em both as a kid.

Sure it was Mario vs. Sonic in the early '90's and most people liked one over the other (Mario for me), but it wasn't like I thought Sonic was crap or anything.

Well, it's obvious that people generally preferred one over the other, but they didn't necessarily hate the other's guts. I don't think it was ever really like that.

It's nice to have them both on the same console. Just think about Mario and Sonic on the same game that will either be the greatest game ever or one of the worst, it all depends on the public.

Samus, easily! =P

Seriously though, seeing how she still beat the hell out of Frog and handled Ganondorf, it's not like she doesn't have any strength. She just ran into a bad match with Mario. You don't just go from beating Sonic 58-42, to not being able to take down Crono, who Sonic nearly rivaled this year. Mario beat Crono about 54/46 this year, so I'd give Samus at least 52/48.

I think I would go with Samus here. It's not that I think she did anything impressive in the summer contest (We already knew Frog was overrated, and if Magus, Tidus and Alucard has proved to be overrated, then why wouldn't Ganonforf also be it?)

But she has won over Sonic twice, and her 58% victory is just to much to match Crono's one victory over Mario.
From: Slowflake | Posted: 12/1/2005 9:58:17 AM | Message Detail
why wouldn't Ganonforf also be it?

Don't quote me on this, but there's this crazy theory out there that Ganondorf boosted twice. That's nuts! I mean come on. Ganondorf beating Magus with 57%? Where the heck do kids get that stuff... hohoho.
