Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 272
From: Slowflake | Posted: 11/18/2005 7:44:49 AM | Message Detail
And for kicks, the percentages for Clinkeroth if you count the first six rounds of 2005 as victories:

Link: 96.00%
Cloud: 86.96%
Sephiroth: 85.71% (82.61% excluding the villains contest)

Also, if you exclude the villains contest, Bowser drops to 66.67%, and Ganondorf to 57.14%.

...those percentages have nothing to do with how good a character, just how easy their path is. Ganon might've done even better than Bowser had their paths been switched every contest.

Indeed. Some projections:

2003: Bowser beats Magus, Yoshi gets 45%+ on Ganondorf, but the latter still wins.

Bowser +1, Ganondorf 0.

2004: Umm... does it really really matter?

Bowser +1, Ganondorf 0.

Spring 2005: Duh.

Bowser +1, Ganondorf 0.

Summer 2005: Bowser loses to Samus but more decently, Kirby/Ganondorf is anybody's guess.

Bowser +1, Ganondorf -0.5.

Very good question. Depends on the circumstances.

With 2005 circumstances, I'd tear my hair out before picking. 2006, though? Ganondorf.

I wouldn't be so sure. In an indirect comparison Bowser proabably does win easily, but certain factors may rear their ugly head in a straight-up encounter.

Ganon would beat Bowser easily. He's a far better character than Bowser is, and even if he's from a worse series, it's still teh more popular one on GF.

Why does Bowser get +1 for 2k4? Are you assuming he'd beat Link and lose to Yoshi?

And SC2k5 Magus is still stronger than SC2k3 Bowser, despite the likelihood that Magus has dropped since then.

Ganon would have the biggest advantage from switching in 2k5, where he would've beaten Kirby and might've beaten Snake.

He's a far better character than Bowser is,

That's entirely subjective, and I would vehemently disagree with you on that. Ganondorf is as lame as they come.

and even if he's from a worse series, it's still teh more popular one on GF.

We've seen a Mario game beat Zelda before. Besides, Ganondorf is too much of a leech. He's got more secondary popularity than anything else.

Give me Bowser over Ganon in 2k5, real easy. After TP it might be a bit more of a problem, but you've got to make Samus equal to Mario AND give Ganon a bunch of SFF in order to bring him above Bowser, and I have a hard time believing Samus could lay down that much SFF after being trounced 60/40 by Mario. Moreover, if she actually DID SFF Ganon that much, and the King of Evil is actually that susceptible to SFF (lol 2k4), then what's to say Bowser won't be the beneficiary of some SFF as well, no matter how small?

As far as I'm concerned, Ganondorf has been exposed. I had 100% faith in him beating Auron this year, and I would have probably put him over Snake in my bracket if I could have stomached it...but, no. If it weren't for TP I wouldn't have a shred of faith left in him at all. Everything he touches turns to crap. His 2k3 value has been exposed by both Tidus and Magus, and unless both characters fluked similar performances against him (followed by Magus fluking against Link), then you've got to acknowledge him under Bowser there. Look at Alucard, the only character he faced in 2k4, even adjusting Sora exposes him. Then compare Diablo Summer to Diablo Spring.

The only--and ONLY--value where Ganondorf has not been shown as utter crap is his Spring value against Sephiroth, and it's basically his own saving grace if and when he goes up against Snake, the only member of the Noble Nine that he will EVER have a chance in hell at beating. And even then I see shades of overperforming there, a match that was a finals match, perhaps the peak of Sephiroth anti-voting, and a match that is only given serious consideration due to, ironically, Bowser's stellar performance in 2k5.

Again, give me Bowser, real easy. Hell, give me Kirby, if only because even if his value is inflated due to rSFF or whatever you want to call it, he'd likely be able to do the same thing to Ganondorf. Until TP, Ganondorf has to go out and prove he's the real deal. Period.

Actually, the inclusion of Vivi is rather surprising considering Nomura didn't design him. Still, the black mage look is universal anyhow, so I could see why he'd make an exception here.

The only bad side effect (if you even want to call it that) of Twilight Princess's release is that it makes Bowser/Ganondorf tougher to call, and I may end up giving the nod to Bowser regardless.

On a similar note, I don't think Ganondorf will ever break the Noble 9. Solid Snake, which some people consider to be Ganon's only shot, will never lose that match. Snake's biggest weaknesses, at least in the opinion of this board, are undoubtedly his array of infamous Solid **** pics, character profiles so hideous that they automatically give his opponent an edge. I buy that, sure, but not against Ganondorf. For if Snake happens to be cursed with a pixelated green turd, he'll be going up against a pixelated fat pig. Poor guy.

man, the stats topic has really died..

I've been thinking - is it possible the stats topic has run its course, with the exception of during contest season? between a lot of questions getting resolved in sc2k5, the x-stats losing their perceived credibility and most of the potential matches having already been discussed, there's just not a lot left to talk about. I haven't seen anyone try to "prove" something with the x-stats in quite some time..

Well, it's not like demographics change all over the place every year, and coming off what was perhaps the best year in gaming history, boosts were bound to happen all over the place. Heck, in 2003 following the X-sts puts you on the leaderboard 60 matches in. Those who turn a blind eye to them are no better off than those who aren't capable of making their own decisions.

Q: Why was Chris Benoit kicked out of the gas station?
A: Because he was carrying matches.
From: Haste2 | Posted: 11/22/2005 6:10:56 AM | Message Detail
There was easily the least change in demographics from '03 to '04, however. It was just sad how accurately many matches were predicted...

Oh, and strictly following the x-stats wouldn't have gotten you in the leaderboard in SC2K3...Bomberman and Kirby were above Alucard, and Sonic was above Cloud. But, loosely interpreting them, yeah...

And yet the newbies that matter were pegged perfectly in terms of advancing in the tournament. Magus in the Sweet 16 (man, how lucky were we back then? This guy was supposed to contend for the championship), Vercetti went there as well, Kefka lost in the second round, so did Zero, so did Master Chief, so did KOS-MOS, etc. The only thing that was a real train wreck in 2003 was Cloud beating Link.
