Whoo-hoo! $150 for me, and I nailed the tiebreaker exactly!

Crap, I wanna know where my points came from 'cause I can't remember what my final entry was.

...I think my final entry had Kingdom Hearts on it, too. If it did, that means I could've won if I had put something closer like San Andreas (which I considered).

Well, at least my tiebreaker was close. I mean, that poll right after the game contest was a dead giveaway that about a quarter of the site would have FF7 on top.

Q: Why was Chris Benoit kicked out of the gas station?
A: Because he was carrying matches.
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 11/11/2005 6:30:50 PM | Message Detail
Maybe, but he won the Guru contest, and transience and BadBFG both got mentions. I know voltch was ineligible, but his tie-breaker of 24 (I think?) beats Bad's 9.

He he he, my tie-breaker was 32. Shame on me, but it still got closer than some of the other guesses on there, so I don't feel so bad.

I looked at the 28% of that poll and figured a lil' extra would come its way due to FF:AC.

yeah, I underestimated the tiebreaker. made me lose the Guru contest, but it wouldn't have mattered as far as prizes go.

I'm guessing maybe voltch didn't turn an entry in because he's not eligible? who knows with him.

The Losers (Bottom 20)

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance -60
Final Fantasy -55
Donkey Kong -54
Duck Hunt -53
Phantasy Star -52
Metal Gear -50
Dance Dance Revolution -49
The Simpsons -48
Pong -44
Panzer Dragoon Saga -43
Galaga -42
NiGHTS into dreams... -41
Pitfall -41
Metroid -40
Phantasy Star IV -38
River City Ransom -38
Shining Force -37
Adventure -37
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker -36
Soul Calibur -34

Not difficult to spot the trend here... There are a ton of games from older/lesser known system who by no means should have been involved in a Greatest Game Contest, if the concern had been to actually put the strongest 64 games on the table and let them have at it.

The other major trend is many games were carried along solely by the built-in fanbase their title creates. Metroid, Final Fantasy, and FFTA are fine examples, but the very best would have to be Wind Waker, as it's certainly the most shocking member of the Losers.

The Winners

Goldeneye 21
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night 18
Metal Gear Solid 15
Final Fantasy Tactics 5
Tetris 5
Earthbound 4
Xenogears 3
Super Smash Bros. Melee 1
Halo: Combat Evolved 1
Super Mario RPG 1

Everything else either stayed put or dropped spots.

Huzzah for GE! Once again, the trend here is pretty clear... The Winning games were those with either a dedicated "cult" following (SOTN, FFT, Earthbound, Xenogears) or those with a large/established following, but one that is very, very dedicated. *cough*the-elite.net*cough* GE, MGS, Melee, Halo, and Mario RPG all fit this bill rather nicely. And I'm chalking the Tetris move up to nostalgia, which could also explain in part the big swing for GE.

Speaking of dedicated fanbases, I should probably mention that if you compare Pokemon's performance against Xenogears against how Pokemon Red did in this Contest, it becomes the 3rd largest swing we saw (+17 positions). Now, that's not exactly apples to apples, since it was technically Pokemon Gold being represented in the Spring, but thought I'd throw it out there just for completeness sake.

I'm so happy Knuckles was the one who got to truly expose Magus.

Got a question...Magus or DK? Yeah, DK looks higher in the x-stats, but also keep in mind two things:

1) Magus did better against Sam Fisher than DK did (though, to be fair, DK faced him after he got two more games).
2) DK could be over-rated in the stats thanks to Master Chief, unless you believe Halo 2, SC:CT, the assumed Nintendo boost, and an unexplainable jump from the Villain Contest to two-three months after for a joke character all had the same effect proportion-wise.

DK could be a tad stronger than Magus indirectly, and I'd still pick Magus to win that match. Somehow, some way, I'd expect him to choke in resounding fashion.

Unless Nintendo has another great (and I mean great) year, I'd take Magus. DK will **** it up.

Hmm. I'd be tempted to pick DK, if only because it's the perfectly doable pick no one will take.
