Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 271

Man. 75% having played FF7, and 88% having played OoT, and OoT still losing like that.

Seems that everyone that's played FF7 loves it. It's almost like all the "hate" that exists for it is just in my imagination.

MGS2 has a lot more casual support than a lot of people give it credit for...but honestly, its problems with the fanbase spread far more than just that. Its lost a lot of its luster in recency with MGS3 now, and its 15-seed in the games contest should've raised a red flag for this right off the bat.

And as has been said before, MGS clobbers it in a contest setting. MGS3 might be able to pull the win as well, though that's debateable.

Starcraft having a 16-seed should have opened some eyes, too...yet it got #18.

Starcraft's a different matter altogether, seeing as how it had to compete with every PC game in existence for its slot in the games contest. I'm also willing to wager it had far more nom support now than it had then.
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 11/5/2005 9:28:38 AM | Message Detail
Talkin' about nom-support, lemme try this...

FACT or FICTION: Without www.SCLegacy.com linking, Diablo 2 would have outranked Starcraft.

Yesterday's poll results had 87.61% for Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy VII has 74.83%. That is definitely something I didn't expect to see. Nearly a 13% difference there. Mercy.

I mean come on, it's ZELDA! Remember that there are a good number of people that just aren't in to RPGs period. Mostly everyone has played a Zelda game at some point, especially the most heralded one of all time... <_<

The shocking part isn't how high Zelda is. It's how low Final Fantasy VII is in comparison. I expected it to at least hit 80%, but that looks clearly out of the picture now.

It is Zelda, but it is also Final Fantasy. You can't tell me Zelda is so much larger than Final Fantasy, because it simply isn't true.

Yeah, but you have to take into account each game's genre. Although RPGs are extremely popular on this site, there still will be a number of people that simply do not play many RPGs. I'm willing to bet that a good portion of the percentage that didn't play it simply don't like RPGs.

Nice list if I say so myself.

Starcraft shows it has strength at 18 and Diablo too being only 2 spots lower at 20. MGS3 beats out MGS2 by 20 spots ranking at 21 and 41. SMB barely beats SMW while SM64 destroys both games. Super Metroid is about 5 spots more popular than Metroid Prime. I'm surprised Half-Life 2 is so high. With SA having the newness factor VC is shown it's true colors being weaker than GTA3 (which any GTA fan would tell you so). Without anti-votes Pokemon Red does well, can't say so much for Gold though. Tetris is a little low IMO, but still does well. WW is above MM, but look at how low they are. Soul Calibur is the highest ranked DC game at 51. Super Mario Kart is the only Mario Kart game to make the list at 61. It's nice to see Pac-Man on the list at 66. Let's all laugh at Halo 2 ranking at a lowly 85, that's what you get from being a write-in. Overall nice list, but it's missing a Mega Man game in here somewhere.

18 have challenged Nintendo in the handheld battle, 18 have failed. (see quote for list)

Dare I say that FFVII's current performance isn't too surprising? Even on a site like GameFAQs, the RPG genre isn't an all-encompassing one that can draw in all sorts of gamers. The action/adventure genre is more suited for doing just that, which is what we saw with Ocarina of Time.

Super Mario Kart is the only Mario Kart game to make the list at 61.

It was also the only one on the drop-box. I would have put Mario Kart 64 on my ten favorites if it was one the list, and I would think it woulda ranked higher too...and MK:DD!! could have been an interesting one to see, too.

Played Super Mario Bros. 3: 94.30%
Played Ocarina of Time: 87.61%
Played Link to the Past: 84.50%
Played Final Fantasy VII: 74.89%
Played Metal Gear Solid: 72.39%
Owned Super Smash Bros. Melee: 71.59%
Played Chrono Trigger: 68.36%
Played Final Fantasy VI: 66.73%
Owned GoldenEye 007: 61.53%
Owned Link to the Past: 60.28%
Owned Halo: Combat Evolved: 47.98%
Owned Final Fantasy VI: 44.47%
Owned Chrono Trigger: 41.35%

More people have *owned* SSBM than have *played* CT. Wow. CT and FFVI are extremely close in terms of played/ownership, which explains why they're so close in the games contest but makes the summer contests even more inexplicable. And only 75% of the site has played FFVII, whereas OoT is pushing 90%...talk about rabid fans!

It looks to me like the "Nintendo" demographic dominates by pure numbers, but the "Square" demographic is generally more rabid.

And I'm impressed with how highly Snake Eater ranked. It's no wonder Snake's strength went up this year.

And FFX > Mario 64. Take THAT!

Halo 2 at 85 *and* ToS beating it with write-ins.

SotN at 15?!!

FACT OR FICTION:

At least 2 Mega Man games, Link's Awakening and The Sims would have all made the list had they been in the drop down box.

Anyone else hoping for a list of the Top 10 Write-Ins?

Do people really think most prefer Halo to Halo 2? I'm not saying it's impossible, but get over Halo 2 ranking 85. Halo 1 ranked 9, and that's much much more indicative of Halo 2's strength.

I would expect so. FF VII/Xenogears and Chrono Trigger/Secret of Mana always seemed like the two clearest-cut cases of SFF we had in that contest to me.

Those obviously also involved SFF. But I think FF VII/Xenogears and CT/SOM are very clear. Both pairs were the same genre, same company, same system, and were released within a year of each other (FF VII/Xenogears) or two years (CT/SOM). The other examples were released farther apart and several of them were games in different genres. CT/SOM even have similar art styles, and Randi looks kind of like Crono.

Donkey Kong, really, deserved to be beaten that badly. It's a game with four levels (three in the NES version) that takes about 15 minutes to beat if you've never played it before. Donkey Kong's greatest popularity came as an arcade game released 5 years before Legend of Zelda. So I doubt there was all that much SFF in that match.
