Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 270

Meh, the problem with the stats wasn't the top 5. Nobody really doubted that they were the five strongest.

hey, Xenogears is a top 5 game to me. I like it over every game that
made the Game Contest with the possible exception of Super Metroid.

Tell that to all the people who had SSBM in there. And if I recall,
having the order of FF7/OoT/CT was very common (about half of the BOP
entries), but following it right up with LttP ahead of SMB3 afterwards
was rare as hell.

Oh, okay. Well, there was a fairly large fraction of the board (a big
minority, if you will) that had either FF6 or Super Metroid over LttP.

I'm talking more after the fact, once the stats were finally released.
Nobody really felt they were legit, but nobody really doubted the top 5
really were the five strongest either. The problems come once you get
past that.

Hence why I stayed the hell away from Starcraft, Halo and Wind Waker on my entry. I shouldn't have, in retrospect... picking that trio would've been a better idea than FF10 + GTA:SA + KH.

I think we all agree that the three strongest games in a contest
setting are CT, OOT and FF7, with the only argument being CT. after
that, there's considerable debate between SSBM, FF6, LTTP and Mario 3,
though the consensus seems to put FF6 seventh.

Yeah... I mean, FF6 was a stone's throw away from LttP and SMB3, but
those two likely advanced further ahead since then (maybe they even
turboed past Chrono Trigger, who knows), and it has to look out for
SSBM as well. Man, FF6/SSBM... that's my worst nightmare.
Makes me think... if there were to be a game contest next summer, if LttP passed ahead of CT, and depending on what TP is worth, there would be a solid chance of three Zelda games in the top 4. Scary, isn't it?

Heh, I had FF7 beating every LoZ game except the original for my bracket.
I don't think LoZ:TP would pass in a matter of months (when's it suppose to be released, anyways?) what took SSBM over two years to do as far as contest strength is concerned. On the other hand though, one could say we saw what LoZ:WW did in a year so why couldn't LoZ:TP do better than that while newer...
...I dunno, LoZ:TP worries me though.

Same here, sort of. It's just two games I really dig. The rest, not so
much. But still, a clean sweep... all the bloody whining on the
board... I could've opened a virtual popcorn stall and become rich

LoZ:WW losing to Starcraft was my least favorite LoZ loss; between it
probably being my favorite LoZ game and Starcraft only beating CT in
terms of games I like the least that beat a LoZ game, I remember not
waking up happy that next morning, heh.
With all these LoZ's and LoZ:TP being talked about, I really hope they don't screw it up. If they'd make it like LoZ:OoT with more big moments like LoZ:WW or make it like LoZ:WW with more difficulty, they are set for success. Anything after that would only be added sugar to the cereal.

Agreed, especially if by some miracle the FF VI GBA port came out before the match.

predictions today were pretty expected:
Link to the Past - 42
Chrono Trigger - 22
Starcraft - 13
Super Mario 64 - 10
Final Fantasy X - 5
Super Metroid - 5
Ocarina of Time - 4
Final Fantasy VII - 3
Sonic 2 - 3
as expected, LTTP is the overwhelming favourite today, with CT the only game even close. if CT is #4, I've got OOT at #1 and FF7 at #2; if LTTP is #4, I'm goin' with the chalk.

Nah, unless it's FF7 itself in an hour, I've still got faith in it
being #1. If it's CT though, then I'm gonna lose faith in LoZ:LttP
again; I know there's alot of arguing about which LoZ game is better
and I know they're both two of the five strongest games here, but I
don't buy them coming in side-by-side. Color me crazy...then again
though, my guess after LoZ:LttP -- SM64 -- doesn't any better a chance
of finishing two spots ahead of SMB3.

my thoughts on FF7 at #2: FF6 finished lower than the consensus
expected, 007 higher. LTTP is going to finish higher as well, assuming
it makes the list. that's one strike against Square and two for
Nintendo. I didn't think there was a lot of separation between OOT and
FF7 in the first place, so I really wouldn't be too amazed.

I can agree with that, but this is also a different population. FF7 isn't automatically #1 in my mind on the boards.

That wasn't the hard part at all; in fact, a rom glitch made it easier

the appropriate cut-scene I wanted (which is why that was the

Eh, I got hurt pretty bad by it, but when (or if) there is another
Games Contest, I won't go overestimating it like crazy. If anything, I
think Starcraft will lose a lot of the novelty and luster that made it
what it was in SpC2k4 and cause it to weaken. Call it a Frog 2k5 redux.
