Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 270

SM128 depends a LOT on how well the Revolution is received, and its remote-thing won't help it alot...but I suspect it to be alot more than what SMS was.

i had a thought.
overall lttp is more popular than FFVI here. but the fact it got such a low seed in it's division might count against it. cause you know Loz fans will put OoT first then you have all the other zelda titles and then the nintendo fans would put other nintendo games over it.and younger players of around 13-14 will vote for more recent titles.so i say Lttp might not make it tomorrow?

If Lttp doesn't appear tommorow, it will be there the day after. I still stand by Lttp's seed in the Spring contest being a fluke.

cause you know Loz fans will put OoT first then you have all the other zelda titles

You are so very much wrong there. There's a lot of internal strife as to which is better between LttP and OoT. From what I've seen, liking both of these is a lot more mutually exclusive than just about any other pair of games from the same series - heck, even those who like Super Metroid best can enjoy Metroid Prime too, and the reverse. For other series like Mario and FF, there's a big consensus around the favorite. Not so for Zelda... there are many who think the series went to hell with OoT and others who think it became good with OoT.

Just big enough of a break between classes to allow this. Nice.

That was around 6% at ~1:00, and the original NES was at just under 70%. Perhaps this "after school" is older than we give them credit for?

I'd say the whole site is. I'm seriously thinking that the idea that SMB3 pulled the whole 8bit division up is bunk. Most people have experienced the original version of the game, and first at that, making it hard to buy that they also didn't do the same with other older games. Seriously, even without this, who thinks that any of those games look all that wrong in the rankings anyway (well, other than Zelda being too low)?

Zelda isn't even too low to begin with. Everything is where it belongs - well, except for the obvious Metroid and by ricochet, Pac-Man.

Well, let me revise that and say that they're more likely to have played NES games than we give them credit for. And here's something interesting:

Played Final Fantasy VI: 66.73%
Owned Halo: Combat Evolved: 47.98%
Played Metal Gear Solid: 72.39%
Owned GoldenEye 007: 61.53%
Owned Super Smash Bros. Melee: 71.59%
Played Super Mario Bros. 3: 94.32%

Now, playing and owning are two different things, but damn is Mario 3 owning (heh) it's competition.

Of course it is. It's the morning vote (a.k.a. "the kiddy vote") where we think the little ones vote. And apparently, that's when "I've never played it. Ever." was at its peak.

what were the others THINKING?

As one of them, it was a combination of denial, plus preference for sm64, smw, and mario kart/tennis games over smb3. I don't not like the game, but I'm not floored by it like most seem to be. I guess I feel the same way about smb3 as I do about Tetris. They're good games...but I think they get excess love just for being older and revolutionary.

I don't think of SMB3 as revolutionary at all - more that it's the ideal platforming game. Tetris is just timeless fun, so that's why I love that game.

my argument yesterday was that if either LTTP or SMB3 was going to miss the list, it was gonna be SMB3. Mario 3 is timeless, but Zelda is preferred here.

Didn't LttP do better in the favorite Zelda poll than SM64 did against OoT? LttP is loved by all, certainly by more than SM64.

It will be interesting to see how many people have played FF VII.

We've had a poll about that before (or was that FF as a whole?) and only ~90% of people said they had played.

Hey now, I'm a fan of 3D Mario. The only problems I had with SMS was the lack of a satisfying ending (concerning both the final boss and if you got all 120 Shines) and the difficulty of FINDING -- note not obtaining -- every blue coin. Other than that, the only room one should have to complain is the water-pack and maybe some other minor things.

The ">or="'s are there 'cuz they're not far behind the game ahead of it and I never got to play either SMW game on the consoles like it was intended.

">=" implies the "or" part, you really don't need to include it. "SM64 >= SMW > SMS >= SMW2:YI > SMB3" looks much cleaner.

On the GBA, in Super Mario Advance 4 4.68% 1326
I can't remember which one 5.88% 1665
I've never played it. Ever. 6.09% 1726
TOTAL VOTES 28330

With the after-school vote here, Super Mario Brothers 3 isn't hurt much; while the older gamers who played it first on the NES dropped hard, SMAS and SMA4 made back up for most of its drop (coming short by .72%)...and this isn't counting "I can't remember which one". However, what is much more evident is that old-schoolers fade out with the after-school vote. With the big drop the NES option took, the small gain the never-played option got, and the nice gain for the can't-remember option (which I'll assume the majority of those votes come from rom-players), you can see how evident this is. However, it's not like that's some surprise...nonetheless, this fits along pretty nice with its Game Contest after-school trends (went about even with Metroid, gained a lil' against FF, down a lil' against LoZ, and gained against CT).

Super Mario Sunshine was "okay" to me. I didn't mind FLUDD at all as it expanded the gameplay somewhat, but I thought it was still a little gimmicky. Some parts of the game were great, such as the Mecha Bowser fight on the roller coaster or the Giant Eel underwater fight. But the final boss WAS a letdown...

What really hurt Super Mario Sunshine was that the marketing for the game was horrible. They didn't even market it as the Mario game of the generation. They treated it like it was more of a side game, and I bet that's how it looked in a lot of people's eyes. Plus they made it seem like the game would be about nothing but washing up graffiti. That's one of the reasons why FLUDD got such a negative reaction.

Top 10 based on the Simpsons? What?

what an awful list. the Simpsons arcade game was the only truly great Simpsons and game and only 3 or 4 games on the list were even worth playing. Simpsons games have never been widely respected among gamers. bah. the list i submitted was much more interesting than that one.

AGREE'D. that game had one of the worst commercials i have ever seen. i believe the commercial's catchphrase was something like: "clean is better than dirty and dirty's meaner than clean!" ugh. that was awful. the game itself was still pretty good, though. a little on the short side, but fun.

also, i thought you guys might be interested in this little tidbit. EGM has been printing a different game -related Top 10 list in each of it's last several issues and this month's list is EGM's Top 10 favorite characters:

10. Lara Croft
9. Pikachu
8. Master Cheif
7. Cloud Strife
6. Pac-Man
5. Sonic the Hedgehog
4. Samus Aran
3. Solid Snake
2. Link
1. Mario

it's an amusing mixture of faded icons and Noble Niners.

Off the top of my head the following could upset.

Metroid Prime
Pokémon Silver/Gold/Crystal
Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy X
Grand Theft Auto Vice City
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
