Well well, speak of the devil. I mentioned the FF7/MGS vs. OoT/GE parallel yesterday, and what happens? Yeah, I'm freakin' cursed. Now the possibility of having one or two elites actually miss the list are very plausible, especially with FF6, who already came in at #10, wasn't even the weakest elite back in the game contest and was just a stone's throw away from not being the second weakest. Should go to show that standings only matter (don't joke on that one please, hopefully you get my point) as long as you don't change the contest format. I'd have picked none of the games that appeared so far to beat FF6 in a single elimination tournament, and the only reason I'd even consider SSBM is the Nintendo boost.

Moving on, the daily BOP update... FOUR lucky people out of 84 had GE on their entries.

Well, that's the beauty of Goldeneye--multiplayer. There are people who have it in their top ten games simply due to going over and playing it with other people that owned the game. Ask the question, "Have you played Goldeneye?", a la yesterday's poll on MGS, and you're going to get an astoundingly high number of people chime in with a yes. Also keeping in mind that these numbers of current ownership alone are impressive on their own--yeah, barring another massive upset I'd say Goldeneye was the most underestimated game on the entire board, even over MGS...hell, well over MGS.

Which makes me feel all the worse for snubbing it. When Halo came out at #9, and everyone on LUE simply shrugged it off because the general consensus was Goldeneye was going to beat it, that was like a gut check right to my stomach. I tried to tell myself it was overestimation of the GTA-variety, even made a sig-bet in the throes of trying to bolster my fading confidence.

Then MGS rolls around the next day, and people start drawing correlations to it and Goldeneye being underrated. thanks to them facing FF7 and OoT, respectively. Liquid's bombing against Sephiroth had given me confidence in MGS, but I had no such friendly reminder with 007...even though I had actually finished up a party that included 007 multiplayer not the day before.

I was only able to concede right before the very end, where I was eerily sure it would make the list. And now, here we are. GE is my Knuckles over Magus, and I couldn't be any happier. Long live Goldeneye.

Goldeneye at 7, for some reason, I'm not surprised.

I still feel stupid for not putting it on my list, even though I nommed it.

I have serious reservations over a GTA game making the list--only Starcraft would be more shocking to me at this point. Hell, I'm not even sure which one is more popular, though I'd lean toward GTA 3 winning out in any direct head-to-head poll (just a feeling).

If any GTA games makes it but not Super Mario 64, then I'm not sure if I even want to stay at this site.

I had forgotten about Starcraft. ;o

Yes, that could make it too. So really:

- ALttP
- Super Mario World
- Starcraft

...are the dark horses. There's only three viable spots left to fight for, so something will get the shaft. Wasn't some variation of Metroid on the list too?

If Starcraft lost out due to competition with games like freaking Warcraft, GTA's competition with itself practically assures me that it won't be making the list.

In fact, that's why I still have the most faith in the Super Six. Yes, there's a chink in the armor known as FFVI, but there are only two upsets left in the form of SMB3 and LttP (CT will *not* be missing the list). There are very few games that stand out to me that have the potential to knock those off, IMO. FFX could do it, but then it's paradoxically over FFVI (or so we think...). SM64 taking out LttP is the most logical shot, IMO.

And of course, as has been said, the fact that a sixteen seed is no way in hell going to be garnering enough nominations to make a list of this magnitude. Hell, Final Fantasy VI almost didn't make it. That should have said it all to everyone right there.

I chossed Super Mario 64 over San Andreas for 8th, but I didn't believe Mario 64 was below GoldenEye so I moved it to 6th.

I am really surprised at such a small number. Shocked. Glad I recalled that "best game ever" survey I ran on Newgrounds a few months ago (which I posted here), which Goldeneye won.

If and when another Game Contest arrives, I think we should absolutely insist on a MGS/GE match. They're nearly equally-seeded (GE-3rd and MGS-4th, coincidentally enough) and were both the second most-nominated games on their systems, both are suspected to have under-performed against the two contest behemoths -- GE probably moreso than MGS, which works out good because GE is under MGS in the x-stats -- though x-stats don't matter much when it's two years later, and now they're side-by-side in this list, with GE being 7th and MGS being 8th.

This is a match that simply should happen.

Technical matter, really, but put the winner of any of those matches against Halo 2, not Halo. I know Halo is what made the list, but we nearly all agree it was the lack of drop down that did it in. It's a minor point, but Halo 2 is likely stronger than Halo.

Haven't said this before, but I'm curious...Why has nearly everyone been convinced that Mario 64 will make the list? I never had it on my list at any point and never even considered it.

I guess the Summer Contest has something to do with it, but I never considered Mario 64 to be THAT popular. It seems like we're getting into that SFII mindset: "Oh man, that game was one of the most revolutionary and important games of all time! It just can't NOT make it!"

I've been a believer that SM64 is #2 on the Mario chain for awhile, then considering Mario just won the main bracket of the Summer Contest and SM64 was released and updated on the DS, I still think it'd be hard to not see it on the list (though ultimately what's likely).
