Huge surprise, and possibly the most pleasant I've experienced in all my time following these Contests. And that's saying something.

From the Guru topic:

Only 4 of our 58 Gurus were wise enough to back GE, a stunning mere 7.00%. This leaves us with 0 Perfect brackets, though we still have 2 perfectly wrong brackets still standing, amazingly. I didn't think we had a chance of having someone miss an entire half of the Top Ten, but these two seem determined to prove me wrong!

4 down, 6 to go... 2 days ago I would have told you that the Super Six were a sure thing to hold those final positions, but after what we've just been through, I'm no longer willing to promise anything. I was sure Mario 64 was going to land on here, but what would it push out? LttP? Melee? Hmmm...

Oh, and for the record, I'd like to state that for over two weeks the final two games on my Top Ten were Mario 64 and Goldeneye. But then on reconsideration I said, "come on now, stop letting your personal bias get in the way. this is GameFAQs, the Land of Square; it's got to be an FF in that final spot."

I can not see 007 over Mario 64;
I can not see Mario 64 over any of the Super Six.

It's already done it once. Now, you may conclude that SM64 was 'SFFed' by OoT in the nominations, but it looks like from this result that GE was as well. I think SM64 may be the biggest bust for our gurus here (Starcraft notwithstanding).

I'm not convinced of LttP's nomination strength, either, which is why I'm convinced that it's the member of the SS most likely to bust. No, I'm not convinced that SM and SMW are stronger nomination beasts (Sonic 2 was on the Genesis so that's not an issue), but I have the same doubts with it.

oh, and I think SM64 had twice as many noms as Starcraft. the busts probably go SM64 -> Starcraft -> FF10, though I don't have the data in front of me.

Hmm, interesting. I guess the Starcraft supporters are just more vocal.

I say SM64 still has a shot, but it's going to have to be at the expense of probably LttP, and it's hard to see that happening. I don't think I can hold out any more for SC or FFX, so those busts are practically set in stone.

IMO, of course. Don't jump down my throat now.

I know people will jump down my throat on this one, but I'm not convinced Mario 3 will make the list, either. that game is probably as old as some of the people who voted in this thing, and it's possible it had competition from SMW and maybe even SM64. the only four I'm convinced on are FF7, OOT, CT and SSBM.

im with you there, i dont think Mario 3 will make the list either. So many people have played it and liked it, but i dont think people will put it high in their top 10, if at all. And as 4 have already gone, i doubt it will make the top 6

SM64 still has a shot to make the list though, what with Mario having just whooped ass in the contest, SM64 being released, and several Mario spin-offs being released recently. It's just that, now, it's most likely a battle between it and Loz:LttP. Considering SM64/LoZ:LttP were the 4th/5th most nominated games on their respective systems yet got a six/seven-seed in their divisions, it's really hard to tell. I'll stick with SM64 since it's newer and the other reasons I listed, but it's hard to tell right now.

Consider this--if neither SM64, SMW, or LttP make the list, then the only intra-division seeding upsets we might have here would be in Division 128, and we figured out how inaccurate those were long ago. That actually suggests at this contest being *easier*, which makes my head hurt.

I don't know about easier.. it means that nominations are more reliable than we thought. the one thing I'm taking from this is that recency is more important than I thought.

Agreed on the point that the population here is going to have a significant difference than the bracket contest. Carriers have failed to arrive.

I'm actually extremely curious to see how a character contest would work out in this format.

I have been thinking that all day - the Noble Nine would likely hold, but the order would be interesting. I'd expect it like this:

Mario
Samus
Crono
Snake
Sonic
MM
..Zero? Squall?

I'm not convinced the above order is right, either, so it'd be fun to see others' thoughts.

I don't feel well taking SM64 over Goldeneye anymore. I did back when the Game Contest's bracket was first released, and I did when Goldeneye outdid what SM64 got against LoZ:OoT. Yet, despite the rampage Mario went on this year and having SM64 released on the DS, unless SM64 makes the list still, I don't feel comfortable with SM64 > GE anymore. Goldeneye's proven it's got the staying power despite being older than "cult favorite" (for lack of a better word) Perfect Dark and main-stream monsters Halo and Halo 2 (not to mention Half-Life 2...did Half-Life 1 get released after Goldeneye, too? I dunno).

Super Metroid; it likely got SFF'd by LoZ:LttP, got a higher seed on arguably the toughest system to get seeded, and is simply a bigger name than C:SotN.

Doing that would likely be hell on me. On the one hand, I think Cloud could conceivably beat Link if he is put at #1 more frequently and because of a lack of anti-votes. And Sephiroth could potentially upset as well if his consistent fans are really *that* diehard. In the end, though, I'd guess they'd split as always and give Link the win. Mario's a wildcard, as he could conceivably end up on more lists than any other character, if not necessarily at the number one spot. Snake has his fanatics (*cough*) and with all the complaining about the rabidness of Sonic fans, I'd expect him to place higher than he usually would. Crono never getting a 1-seed I know is a lot of Ceej's doing, but it scares me nonetheless. Samus...I don't know what to think of her. Probably right behind Mario where you put her, just to be safe. Then there's Mega Man...probably on the tail end. As for the tenth character...

UPSET SPECIAL: KIRBY

Super Metroid blasts it into nothingness. SotN is no joke (it beat Perfect Dark, after all), but let's not get carried away with Goldeneye right now. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing it on the list, but all this proves is that the game has a hardcore legions of fans who will worship it for years to come. Put it in a direct match with Super Mario 64, however, and it'll end in a 60/40 affair. Call it Mario/Samus II.

Kirby is probably not a bad choice, actually. to think of it, I might put Crono lower than Snake or Sonic.. though the boards seem to love CT. we'll see in a couple days if they really do or not.

Gamefaqs once again got it right with Goldeneye. Apart from Halo this is turning out to be a very credible list.

I think SMB3 is just too retro for the crowds nowadays, and CT is on the fall at long last IMO. I think that Cjay wouldnt have put up that poll a few days ago if FF7 had won or it would have made the contest look very predictable. And Ocarina didn't lose by much in 2004 (Link's weakest year).

The 2nd seed in that division (FF6) only placed 10th.
It's not impossible that CT didn't make the top 10 at all.

I'm more inclined to think that Link's weakest year was 2002, he gained a lot in 2k3, and that Cloud was just that underrated in 2k2 and KHF was just THAT good in 2k3. And by 'think', I mean Chichiri convinced me of that and I'm echoing the sentiments.

As of now, I still gotta go with FICTION. LttP is on the edge, and after further review SMB3 isn't in great shape either. But it's hard to think of replacements, and I feel most confident in rounding out the rest of this list with the Super Six.

Concerning this, of course, I'd say the game most likely to upset if LttP doesn't make it is SM64. If SMB3 doesn't make it, my pick is FFX for the slot.
