I really don't think the whole "leeching off votes" argument will have as large an effect as some are claiming. If people were having that much trouble deciding between two or three Mario/Zelda/Final Fantasy/whatever titles, wouldn't they just include all of them in their list? Everyone has ten available spots with zero restrictions, after all.

Or at least give us how many points each game got us. Then it'd be simple to piece the list together.

I'm getting an odd feeling that FF7 perhaps SFFd Metal Gear Solid.

The "odd" feeling should be thinking that FFVII didn't SFF MGS in some manner. Yes, people want to say that Frog being overrated "justifies" Sephiroth's performance on Liquid Snake, but the two are still noticeably far apart in rankings.

And honestly, I'm impressed that 72% of the population has played the game, and at least 50% played the original on the PSX (not even counting those who said they just played it but never beat it). With that in mind, it's not farfetched or even surprising to see FFVII overperform on MGS.

And yes, Metal Gear Solid is the most popular in the series. I stated it emphatically yesterday, and I still stand by it. Anyone still willing to take MGS2 head-to-head?

Oh, and Halo is the #9 FAQ today, and FFVI dropped from #6 to #29 today. Being on the list helps. We ought to see MGS up there tomorrow.

And I think I've got all three games on the list somewhere, but I don't remember where. I'm pretty sure I kept MGS on the final list.

I disagree. FF VII, FF IX, and FF Tactics are all games that I would have given serious consideration to if I hadn't already had two FF games in my top ten (IV and VI). So while I'm sure there will be plenty of people with two Mario or Zelda games in their list, I'm also pretty sure there will be a lot less with three or four. I think most people can probably think of more than 10 games they like a lot, and would be hesitant to use so many spots on one series.

i believe only ONE mario title will make the list due to all the games leeching off votes

I think that's a bunch of crap. If you like one Mario game you'd probably be more inclined to put another Mario game on your list. This isn't like a regular contest where the games face each other. Your point would seem more valid if there was a vote SMB3 vs SSBM vs SM64 vs SMW and you only could choose one. Then there would be this "leeching" that people are talking about. It shouldn't make that much of a difference. On my favorites list I had 2 Mario games (5 if you count both the Smash Bro's and Double Dash). I don't see people coming up with a quota for there top ten list, "I already have SSBM so I can't put down another Mario game and I need one MGS title plus I haven't put down a FF yet". I would assume that if a person really likes a series (Mario, FF, MGS, Zelda, etc) they would put all the games that they like on there if they truly liked them better than other games .

I don't know why that would make a difference on your top 10 list. If a game is one of your top 10 favorites, then it should be on your list. Stay true to yourself!!!

not as many votes today because I was away for most of the day, but today's prediction results:

SM64 - 19
Starcraft - 19
Link to the Past - 7
FF10 - 7
SSBM - 6
007 - 4
GTA:VC - 3
FF8 - 3
GTA:SA - 2
Super Mario World - 2
WOW - 1
SM - 1
FF4 - 1
Pokemon Gold/Silver - 1
Super Metroid - 1
RE4 - 1
Mario 3 - 1
Tetris - 1

the faith in Starcraft never dies. it seems clear to me that people think the two weakest Super Six games are LTTP and SSBM - the other three get zero votes and Mario 3 only got one. Starcraft had an overwhelming lead early, SM64 surged back in the day and they went vote for vote to the end.

personally, I'm cheering for one the Super Six to show up next so there's still some drama left.

FFVII, OoT, CT, SSBM, SMB3, and LttP are the 'Super Six', one short of the 'Super Seven' without FFVI.

And I guess the 32-64 division was a bit stronger than we all thought, huh?

Heh, looks like the tradition of top-seeded games taking the top spots continues. LttP's chances are looking slimmer than ever, although the possibility certainly remains.

And as I thought, Goldeneye was SFF'd just as much as MGS was. Everyone with an N64 owned both OoT and GE, so it's not surprising that we'd see some substantial SFF there.

It IS in the '7-8' range...exactly at number 7, actually. But we had to throw out the term 'Super Seven' when referring to the remaining games on the list, seeing as how FFVI already came in at 10th.

We shouldn't be so surprised. It's frickin' Goldeneye. It dominated the FPS genre all the way until Halo and sold something like 5-million copies in the US alone...Goldeneye and OoT were practically side-by-side in popularity on the N64.

This is far from insanity, I had my #10 at Goldeneye forever until I snubbed it thanks to the board (yeah, yeah, live by the board die by the board I only blame myself). Its seeding was just too high for me to ignore, and today I was wishing I'd changed it back more than ever.

And I have serious doubts about LttP making the list now.

well, check this out:

SM64 got 23.74% on OOT;
Goldeneye got 26.95%.

I started out writing that SM64 is now assured of being on the list and I still believe that, but Goldeneye actually got a higher percentage. I believe there's more SFF in SM64/OOT, but still, interesting.

for now, I'm taking SM64 > LTTP. and Starcraft is oh-so-screwed.

I'd actually go against my fanboyism and give 007 the nod over MGS. It placed higher here, had a higher seed (I know it was flawed, but that's still impressive), and I think OoT overperformed on it more than FF7 on MGS, respectively. It'd still give me fits though, as would either of the two versus SM64 (though I'd probably pick SM64 in both).
From: Karma Hunter | Posted: 10/29/2005 10:48:14 PM | Message Detail
But then again, MGS was splitting votes with MGS2 and MGS3 to get its place in this contest...did Goldeneye split votes with PD? Ah, dammit.

Obviously, this match will happen in the next games contest just to make me cry.

And as a final thought, this is an even bigger 'X-Stats Upset' than the last. From 28th in the SFF-adjusted rankings to 7th in these. That kills me.

Oh, and if LUE is any indication, the casuals utterly destroyed Board 8 on this pick. Live by, et cetera.
