Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 268

"Especially since FFVII was the game of that generation... I think that most of the games it went up against in that generation may be underrated." --what I was referring to Leonhart.

Though I realize now that therealmnm actually did refer to CT/FF7 quietly in that.

I'd be inclined to believe that MGS is more popular than 2, though it wouldn't surprise me if it went the other way, either.

Doesn't change the fact that Ghost Babel is the best in the series. >_>

Oh no. I don't think there was anything wrong with the divisional finals themselves! It's just that I don't like having to base everything in the 8-bit generation on how well Mario 3 was able to stand up to CT... Likewise with the other generations.

MGS2 >>> MGS, goodness-wise. The gameplay is actually fun in that one, a sharp contrast to the other two games.

As for the debate as to which game get #3, there are three possibilities: Chrono Trigger, SSBM, and OoT. I can see CT being anywhere from #3 to #5, SSBM #2 to #4, and OoT as #2 or #3.

It's just that I don't like having to base everything in the 8-bit generation on how well Mario 3 was able to stand up to CT

But...that doesn't make any sense. That's how the XS work in every contest. None of the other 8-bit games would've stood up any better; hell, they might have had an advantage because SMB3 did it for them.

From: Slowflake | Posted: 10/27/2005 9:57:43 PM | Message Detail
I personally have no problem with that. SMB3 had the franchise disadvantage against both LoZ and FF1, and it compensated through sheer awesomeness and then some, because SMB3 is that special. In hindsight, those were two very convincing wins, and its small loss at the hands of CT was just the next step.

It depends on how much being new helps it out. Personally, I stand by it beating out SMB3 in a contest setting, and my entry closed with SSBM/SMB3 at #4/#5 on my list...not so sure on that one, but I still have confidence enough in it to not wanna change it.

did it show up right at 12? maybe the game shows up at 12 and the poll at 3.

I like it showing up early because people are around to talk about it. last night there were like 10-15 of us awake on the entire board.

Oh early is good. I'm not complaining about that. I just thought it was a bit unusual.

On Halo2, I don't remember seeing it in the drop-down choices in the entry form (I could be wrong about it). That combined with the Halo1 possibly taking away some votes may doesn't bode well for Halo2's chances of showing up in the top10.

Copied from my Guru update:

A shocking 22 Gurus did not have Halo listed anywhere in their Top Ten. In my mind, that calls for a big dubya tea eff mate. The minute it was announced that Halo 2 wasn't to be listed in the drop down box, the original became a Top Ten lock for me. Divided, Nintendo and Square would have conquered... but with all of Xbox nation united behind a single game, I didn't see any way we were going to be able to keep it out of the final listing.

Even worse, we have 5 Gurus who didn't list either FF6 OR Halo. My goodness! It looks like in most cases it was faith in Halo 2/FFX that did them in. What a shame.

The Elite listing is quickly beginning to dwindle! Only 21 Gurus remain without a black mark on their record (aka, they're 2/2 in getting Top Ten games).

well, if you want to do that, FF10 > FF7 > FF6, and FF10 needs to be #8, dammit. I'll have a sexy score of 2 with all seven of my other picks available. not that I think FF10 has a whole lot of hope.. though it's got a better shot than MGS has, methinks.

they did the same thing with the Gamecube last week:

No, but I might for Twilight Princess 4.8% 3564
No, but I used to 4.45% 3301
No, never have, never will 21% 15580

it seems you're either buying a GC for TP or you're not buying one at all. I realize I'm like the only exception here, but still.

HaRRicH, I think your poll was better. What's the point of having BOTH of the last two options, when they pretty much are saying the same thing?

Unless the fourth option is supposed to mean that they played it, but they didn't like it... But that's a horrible way of wording that...

yeah, I didn't know which one to choose either. it seems like both are putting words in your mouth other than 'I've just never played it'.

I'm not sure why, but B8 seems to think Starcraft will be #8. it's doubling every other option in my prediction topic. I didn't expect that one.

I'm going to throw in the idea that it's possible a surprise is that SMB3 isn't on the list at all. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but for some reason I think more recent games are going to dominate the list.

Oh, and has anyone said that we already have our first inconsistent spring result with Halo > FFVI?

40% ownership for Halo isn't bad at all. I don't think that it's placing in the top 10 should be surprising to us in the least. Most of us figured that a Halo would be making a great deal of lists. Just couldn't decide on the impact of having no Halo 2 on the drop down list...

I still don't trust the Spring Stats since the divisions were grouped by Generation. With a bunch of games being so related, I don't like the fact that the strength of ALL the games in a generation were based on how one single game stood up to another generation.

It's funny how people always point to this as the reason generational divisions are problematic... when the strength of a division is ALWAYS based on how a single division winner stacks up against another division winner. The real reason generational divisions are questionable is that there's a lot more possibility for SFF inside the division than there would be if the generations weren't segregated.

I disagree - I'm actually getting more confident in Starcraft making the list rather than less. Pre-contest, Starcraft was projected to be in the top 10, and so far we haven't seen any evidence that a game outside the consensus top 10 is going to displace it. All we've seen are two consensus top 10s doing a little worse than expected.

Until we see evidence to the contrary, I believe the best prediction we have is that the rest of the consensus top 10 is in the relative order we predicted. So I'm not dismissing Starcraft until I see something like SMW, Super Metroid, or MGS in the top 10 - evidence that something actually displaced Starcraft.
