If Xbox ownership doesn't impress tomorrow, one might take this as an influx of old-school gamers...though that wouldn't explain why this is the first year Crono didn't gain a notable boost, and Terra would look even MORE like a bomb. It should be interesting to see how DS-ownership looks if a poll's done over that; that might answer alot of our questions about The Boost (TM).

What does Xbox ownership have to do with old school gamers? I know people that still play their NES's that own XBoxs and I know people who own GCs and/or PS2s and probably never touched a controller before the N64 came out.

It's not so much the Xbox as it is this generation's consoles; if there's decreased ownership of our newest systems, one would think that they would own the older systems (whether it's Atari or Dreamcast, we dunno much about that). ..thus, it could be taken as an influx of old-school gamers, for whatever reason they would come.

The after-school vote is only part of it - the other reason the X-Box does so well during the day is that it's way more popular in the US than anywhere else. That'll help it gain steam when it's daytime in North America, regardless of the day of the week.

These DS numbers defiantly seem higher than they were last time he ran a poll like this. Could explain the Kirby increase more easily.

Hmm, ownership slightly down for PS2 and X-Box (how could the X-Box go any lower to begin with?), and slightly up for the Gamecube. Not all that surprising - it goes in the same vein the contest indicated. The only problem with linking the two together is that these polls that were so good to the PS2 and X-Box were taken a week or two before the contest.

Also, judging by today's poll the GBA ownership seems way, way down from the poll transience pointed out, while the DS is up a couple points from the polls just before the contest. For reference purposes in case there's a PSP poll tomorrow, the PSP had 16.45% ownership before the contest.

On another subject, I have decided to stop partaking in bracket contests for a while, because each time I get a wrong pick that had enough foreshadowing I set myself up for that much bigger disappointments by hopelessly clinging. It was fairly obvious all along that if Mario and Samus were looking even going into their match then Mario had it, but I still held out hope against all hope. I hadn't buried Tidus just quite yet against Kirby, either. So yeah, no more filling brackets for me. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm leaving just yet (though if there's no trace of Link, Cloud, Sephiroth or Mario in the same bracket as the others I sure as hell will be gone faster than a blue hedgehog on a sugar trip).

Which poll are you referring too? The most recent "Got x" poll series I know of starts at Poll 1862, and it actually shows a rise in PS2 ownership (74.42% then --> 75.75% now). Did I miss a series?

Xbox in America>Xbox in Europe - they've sold about twice as many units in America than Europe, whereas Sony have sold about the same number of PS2s IIRC.

Also, software sells terribly compared to America - Halo 2 got outsold by Driv3r here last year.

It's still 2nd ahead of the Gamecube though.

Europe is way, way behind NA in terms of game sales. Despite being home to like a quarter of the world's population even when you add in Austalian sales the region is still usually 3rd in terms of sales.

Oh, and the important thing to look at in that link provided is that they say Xbox holds a 30% market share in Europe. No way in hell it holds more than that in NA. For its first year it was lucky to take 12% and as of about a year and a half ago it was at 27% (the link you provided is from last year, so they are pretty close in relevance). The two are of equal popularity in Europe and NA.

I don't trust that 30% figure.

According to Microsoft's own figures, they'd sold 3.7m Xboxs by the end of 2003 and 5m by the end of 2004 i.e. they sold 1.3m throughout 2004.

For them to have won a 30% market share all other consoles must have sold about 3.03m. I work out that Sony sold about 4m PS2s (although I don't have firm figures) and Nintendo say they sold 1m GBAs (although I don't have any Gamecube figures). That already puts them down to 14%, and I havn't even factored in Nintendo selling a single Gamecube.

I'm pretty sure no matter what way you look at it, Xbox is more popular in America than in Europe.

Oh, and being from the UK, I'm already a second-class citizen when it comes to games - at least let me live in a land where the Xbox is slightly less popular!

I'm fairly certain that Sony has sold over 20 million PS2s in Europe, but I can post more exact figures when I get home. Microsoft's market share isn't even close to 30%.

Fair enough, I thought they did. Even taking 1m GBAs out, Microsoft are down to about a 25% share comparing the Xbox to PS2 alone, and that’s before any Gamecubes are taken into consideration – they’re probably much closer to 20% than 30% for the whole of 2004.

Okay, maybe you've missed someting, so I'll go over this with you. Market share is only console sales (no portable) and also includes software sales. That means if M$ sells more games they increase their market share. According to all reports Xbox games sales have been going up significantly since the price drop to $180 while PS2 sales have seen some even more noticable drops since then.

With the exception of GTASA, a multiconsole release, has Sony had a multi million copy sell in the last two years? Not really. Does the Xbox have one to match it? Yep. PS2 game sales are no longer impressing, they aren't that far ahead of XBox's any more, and that's why Xbox controls a larger share than PS2... the ratios of console to software sales is increasing for MS and shrinking for Sony.
