Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 267.

Well, Katamari is a pretty well repped write in, and I bet Halo 2 is doing fairly well with the notb8ers. I refused to not write in Lufia 2, though, becuase I honestly do think it's one of the best games ever. If LoZ wasn't on that lst I'd write that in too. Heck, the first 6 entries of my top 10 list would have all been written if they weren't on that list (thankfully 5 were). Some games deserve the love, even if the efforts are futile.

And speaking of the efforts, I hope that ceej releases some comprehensive data on this. If he only releases the top 10 and the winning entries (and would be winners, for non-eligible particapants) I'll be sad. I want to see at least top 100 with their points and an extra list of popular write-ins that didn't make the list. Shouldn't be asking too much, that.

only three of my top 10 are on that list, and I too decided I wanted to see games I liked do well. there's no point in putting Shadow Hearts or Lode Runner in there when they have no chance of doing well.

metroid: zero mission - 28:50

It wasn't really laziness, persay, just annoyance that I had all my info put in then when I put up a write-in [Lufia 2] it cleared the data I already had set and I didn't want to go through that again.

Bingo; between that and wanting the games I put on my list to be games that stood the best chance (as-in on the default list), I didn't fool with any write-ins.

those are also my thoughts, which is why i have no faith that any write-ins can make the Top Ten. for example, i believe that a large majority of people (or at least half) who would have chosen Halo 2 will look for Halo 2, see "Halo: Combat Evolved", say screw it, and just click on that.

I find thta to be more true about Halo 2 than other exemptions, though. If someone thinks Katamari is the best game ever they are going to write it in. When there's no immeadiate alternative, like there is for the Halo 2 fans, they will be more inclined to make a write-in. Oh, and if there is a more comprehensive list (instead of announcing just the top 10) I cna see quite a few write-ins ranking. Sure, none near the top 10 (I'd be surprised to see more than 2 in the top 25) but they'll be out there.

I'll also agree with that; I didn't feel especially inclined to pick Sonic 2 as Sonic & Knuckles, among other examples. That should still be considered when thinking about Halo though, I suppose.

Well, the thing about Halo 2 is that there's going to be a large overlap of users. Add that to the fact that many people consider Halo 1 to be the technically superior game (balance issues and whatnot) and the fact that it's easier to pick Halo than Halo 2 and I think it's the most likely candidate to have that happen. Besides, it's not like a FF game where there are drastically different aspects to each game and strong reason for them to have sepperate groups of fans.

Top 100 SNES games:

Top 100 NES games:
http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=912&topic=22905115

For both you submit your list of top 10 NES/SNES games, 1st place is worth 10 points, 2nd 9 points, etc.. It's open only to those with GameFAQs accounts. Sound a bit familier? The SNES one is a bit more interesting because it shows the number of 1st place votes and total number of votes.

10-Diablo 2

9-LoZ:LttP
10-MGS

01. Chrono Trigger ( 2253 ) 299 - 85
02. Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past ( 2242 ) 331 - 58

LttP was listed on the most ballots easily, even though it didn't rank the highest. An interesting note.

That just shows it hasn't got huge support to be the best of the system. Frankly, I can't believe people would have left LttP off their top 10 (yeah, I'm lookin' at you harrich), it's fairly intuitive that CT, FF6, and LttP are basically locks. LttP isn't that far off from OoT in popularity, after all.

As I said, SNES was by far the most competitive platform in the SpC2k4 nominations, just because LttP only got 6th seed doesn't mean it's off the radar in something like this. It had more competition for its spot than any non-SNES game that is expected to make top 10.

I made one other minor change...

WAS:
2-CT
3-LoZ:OoT

NOW:
2-LoZ:OoT
3-CT

...I figure if CT's fighting tooth and nail to stay ahead of LoZ:LttP just on its own system in a more-hardcore listing than what CJay's gonna be doing, then it's gonna be nigh-impossible for it to outdo LoZ:OoT since it's spanning all systems, for a less hardcore audience, older, weaker according to the Game Contest, might be losing power (according to our past contest, though that's just speculation), and LoZ:OoT > LoZ:LttP.

And yes, I realize the SNES had lots of competition, but that was still four other games from just its own system that out-nominated it (with a flawed system, yes, but nonetheless). It was also the least nominated of the top rep of each of Nintendo's big franchises (as far as seeding went, SM > SMW > LoZ:LttP). The nomination system was flawed, yes, but I think my caution was still understandable.

And I disagree. Despite the "poor" seeding it should have recieved some more serious consideration. In a skewed system like that SMW and SM came out ahead, but when put to task neither of them had a shot at LttP. When you add that to the fact that some may have been gaming the system (LttP would be less likely to miss the contest than those two) and that it's clearly been shown that the game rarely tops lists but tends to be on them quite frequently (the reason you changed your mind) it's easy to see why that happened and why it's wrong. SpC2k4 seeding isn't everything, there are other factors at stake here.

From: HaRRicH | Posted: 10/9/2005 7:13:59 PM | Message Detail
The other factors were also harder to see clearly, thus were paid less attention. Not to say that justifies it, seeing as how I changed my mind now that we've seen something alot more definitive, but seeing the seeding can still set the tone for some things. I just misunderstood LoZ:LttP as fittin' under "some things" instead of how steady a favorite it really is.

I think LttP's 6th seed in the Spring Contest was just a fluke. I made a post about this during the Spring 2004 contest that sums up why I think this:

From: Team Rocket Elite | Posted: 3/17/2004 10:21:48 AM | Message Detail
It's interesting to look at it based on the number of 1st place votes:

Seeding. Game - #1 Votes

1. Chrono Trigger - 63
6. Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past - 36
2. Final Fantasy VI - 33
3. Super Metroid - 19
4. Super Mario World - 18
-. Terranigma - 13
8. Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars - 11
7. EarthBound - 9
16. Secret Of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) - 7
-. Tales Of Phantasia - 7
-. Super Mario All-Stars - 6
-. Secret Of Evermore - 6

The nominations follow it almost exactly. The two exceptions being Zelda: LTTP and Terranigma. As far as I know, Terranigma never got a North American release. But why did LTTP get such a low seed?

With the Spring, you already had a Zelda game that was a lock to get in (OoT). I wouldn't be surprised if more people went with Super Metroid in the Spring nomination system just to make sure a Metroid game made it in.

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. Super Smash Bros.
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Super Mario Bros. 3
6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
7. Final Fantasy VI/III
8. Super Mario World
9. Halo
10. Final Fantasy X

If changes are to be made from here on out, they'll likely only be made on the last four.

A little side discussion to pass the time:

How many representatives do you think each particular console will get in the Top 10? I'm thinking...

SNES - 4
NES - 1
N64 - 1
PS - 1
PS2 - 1
GC - 1
Xbox - 1

The only systems with a chance to rain on the SNES's parade are the Playstation and Nintendo 64, and FFVIII/SM64 better be on their A games for that to happen. As for the current consoles, the Gamecube and Xbox each have an almighty fan favorite that should make it in, and even though the PS2 is without such a luxury, a Top 10 featuring zero PS2 games is tough to swallow, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

Every time I think of Konami and the SNES, it reminds me of either how mad I am that they didn't make MGS games earlier or how happy I am that they stopped making MG games for a generation so they could get their act straight for the PSX.

Yes, I realize they're the same series, but I don't like to acknowledge it.

That's right, no PS2 games. I know that FFX, GTA:SA, MGS2, KH, and probably another one or two are perfectly acceptable candidates, but I think they're all gonna come up short (with FFX being the most likely to rain on my parade).

Then you obviously weren't playing them in their respective times. Excepting a bad translation MG was a top-notch game in its day and was highly regarded (considering).

Also, I'm thinking there'll be one more NES game, one less SNES game, one more N64 game and one less PS2 game as compared to yoblazzer's list.

hey, mine's the same as Harrich's. we probably have the same games, too, though in different order.

I played MG when it came out and didn't like it at all. it was definitely a known title, but not nearly to the extent that the MGS series is.

does Slow's BOP have combined scores for each game? I wonder what the "consensus" is, since the bottom of the list could be all over the place, as will Halo.

all you'd have to do is add the scores up, that should be easy to do... it'd only be good for telling the consensus though. I can pretty much guarantee that these titles will be in the top 8:

FF7
OOT
CT
SSBM
LTTP
SMB3
FF6
Halo

then we've got MGS, SM64, Halo 2, SMW, the GTA titles and a bunch of other fringe games.

I have MGS currently at #10 and am considering getting rid of it. since there are three MGS games, wouldn't it make sense that they'd split votes? I took that thinking in regards to Mario and Zelda, so I imagine the same would happen with MGS.

if any GC game is #2, it's probably Wind Waker. Goldeneye in the top 10 is crazy talk.

I don't know what else it'd be though...plus, didn't it rank very high up on some other site(s)'s list(s)? Add to it it's on the default list and it got a 3-seed (right behind a 2-seeded LoZ:OoT, no less)...

...no, I don't think GE would make the list, but I could see how it could be an uber-upset for somebody.

actually, MK64 makes more sense to me than Goldeneye. both are about equal in my mind and have no chance at a top 10 placement, but I could see MK64 giving Goldeneye a fight.

Except MK64 would be a write-in.

I'm still baffled at why Ceej doesn't have Halo 2 on there. All THREE GTA PS2 games. Half-Life, Half-Life 2, AND Counterstrike. But no Halo 2? It doesn't make sense. I think he did it on purpose...

Oh, and if this was a top 15 list, I think I'd have a slot for GoldenEye.

Not to mention Metroid Prime 1 and 2.

I think CJay purposely left out Halo 2, if you ask me, to cause some controversy and see how the write-ins treat it; it seriously has to be the single biggest snub here, and it would be prime for stealing a spot in the Top Ten or even Top Five.

If there were 15, I still wouldn't put Goldeneye on the list. I'd be struggling enough to put a MGS or Metroid game in the top 15. I'd be fairly certain another FF game and another Mario game would get on before those games.

(Between FFVI, FFVIII, and FFX/Super Mario World, Super Mario 64. I'm aware that some of those will be top 10. I'm just saying that all of those are probably Top 15).

I wouldn't give Halo 2 a top 5 spot if it was on the list half a dozen times. As a write in I doubt it cracks top 20

Jman_gamerX8 teamed up with Mario to kick my ass!

ah, you're right, I forgot about that. still, in a contest setting, I'd say it's up for debate.
