I hardly ever hear of these things. How many of the Board 8 population actually participates in them?

I'm thinkin' it got about, say, 50-60 individuals...hard to tell though, especially just by memory.

It might be; I know he did several different "rounds" though (best game, period; best of each genre; best of each era; etc.), so that's why I thought it was less than that as far as individuals go. No doubt he got more responses than 50-60 though.

FFVII and OoT was a given, most people had CT in 3rd so I bumped him down. GE007, FFX and RE4 are my upset picks and I think all of them could happen. If Halo 2 was on the list I would've took it. The only game that I don't have a lot of faith in is SM64, don't know why.

Let's think of it this way, though. The 128 games were strong not because they were loved but because they were in recent memory. With the way this is setup, people are more likely to think back about older games they loved and rank them more highly. I actually think the 1st and 2nd 8 bit games have a significantly better chance of making the list than the 1st and 2nd 128 bit games, and while I recognize that the decline is steeper, I'm rather certain neither groups 5/6s are going to do anything spectacular here. I'd rate WW the highest, and take DK over FFTA with PS in last of the group.

Seriously, when the setup is like this, there enough pull for the older games that they won't be left in the dust. The "nominators" are a different group than the voters, so it should come as no surprise that contest strength isn't going to equal actual standings here.

Well, there's probably less competition (fewer total notable games) among the old-school games than the new-school. I'm just hoping that a good chunk of the voters still appreciate the 8/16-bit days...

And, in turn, the games that are notable now will almost be forgotten in the future. Think of it like this, we all know games like Kid Icarus were really good, but does the general public remember that? No. In 2025 people will still remember Super Mario Bros, will they rememeber God of War?

Oh, and I'm hoping this isn't a faux nomination, as was suggested earlier. While I do want to see another games cotnest I don't want it to be as biased as this list will be. There are simply too many games missing from that list that should have a fair shot of making the contest.

Heck, if you look it only has one Sonic game, that being the one in the SpC. I'd be willing to bet some people would consider Sonic 1 more desrving of the spot and a hell of a lot of people would go for Sonic 3 & Knuckles if given the chance. There's no Mega Man, which would likely make it if given a normal nomination system for a games contest, and a hell of a lot more that would have a chance of making it but just aren't on that list. It's simply unfair for this to be "nominations", plain and simple.

well, since i don't see anyone else commenting on this:

In addition, any entry with any "joke" games will be discarded. While you may think it's hilarious to try and get all your friends to vote up Big Rigs, we're actually trying to build a serious list here. Plus, we'll give you ample opportunity to create other kinds of Top 10 lists before the month is out, so be patient.

what does anyone else think Ceej has in mind for us? Top 10 Worst Games List? Top 10 Characters? Top 10 Worst Characters? Top 10 Heroes? Top 10 Villains? Top Ten Hottest Characters? i wonder how many of these lists he plans to do and how quickly we will see them.

also, i don't really like the drop-down lists very much either. it took me a couple of minutes to realize that you could add games that weren't on the pre-made list. most casuals who won't put a ton of thought into this list are not gonna bother searching for games that aren't on that list. that means that i guarantee that there are no games not on that list that will make the final Top 10 list, including Halo 2, Tales of Symphonia, and all 58 Megaman games.

so, here's my personal Top 10 -

1. Final Fantasy 6
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Final Fantasy 7
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Mario Kart
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee
7. Final Fantasy Tactics
8. Secret of Mana
9. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
10. Advance Wars

after looking at that, i realize now that my list is all Nintendo or Square. but ya know, those two companies truly are the most masterful creators of video games, so they deserve it. but, to point out that other companies can make great games, too, here are what i feel are the Top 10 games not made by Nintendo or Square:

1. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
2. Metal Gear Solid
3. Soul Calibur
4. NFL Blitz
5. Super Monkey Ball
6. Suikoden 3
7. Suikoden 2
8. Resident Evil 2
9. Marvel vs. Capcom 2
10. Skies of Arcadia Legends

Advance Wars - i thought it was a longshot at hitting #9 or #10 due to the recency factor of Advance Wars being huge on the DS right now. however, i just looked at the BOP and saw how few favorites lists Advance Wars is on. tied for 123rd? yeesh. maybe not.

SotN - again, the recency of a new Castlevania game being a killer app for the DS might boost the opinion of Castlevania in people's minds right now. but, again -only 1 out of the 40 BOP entries has SotN on their favorites list. not a good sign.

Tetris - despite Tetris's low x-stat value in Sp2K4, i still think Tetris could be one of those games that shows up on a lot of people's lists. plus, it was a 2 seed back in Sp2K4, meaning it did have a considerable amount of front page nominations.

what does anyone else think Ceej has in mind for us? Top 10 Worst Games List? Top 10 Characters? Top 10 Worst Characters? Top 10 Heroes? Top 10 Villains? Top Ten Hottest Characters? i wonder how many of these lists he plans to do and how quickly we will see them.

For what it's worth, this is said on the front page: "We'll have more anniversary stuff over the next two months, so stick around!" I think you're on the right track, though I don't think we'll see more than, say, four lists: best games, best characters, worst games, and worst characters. We might get some genre-specific lists though.

actually, yeah, i could totally see Ceej doing something similar for Game FAQS Top 10 RPGs, if there aren't many in the overall Top 10 lists.
