I think the PS3 will be the last console Sony will make. The only reason for Sony not to leave the console wars is if PS3 destroys Xbox360 and the Revolution like the PS2 did for the Xbox and Gamecube.

Just a question who much is Sony in debt?

It's doubtful PS3 will be their last console, though I wouldn't expect a follow up for the PSP. The fact is, for all their loses M$ has been hit harder. Xbox was selling at a loss from day one and still hasn't stopped, the same is not to be said for the PS2. While the software sales have increased for the Xbox noticably (offsetting the loses) and the PS2 has dropped Sony is still running hte market, and game sales are still acceptable (I'd imagine). All they have to do with the PS3 is split the market evenly and they are still ahead of the game, I don't think it's beyond them if they can have a good launch considering the 360 looks like it will fail to impress.

The gaming part of Sony may be making them money, but the rest of Sony (except for like1 or 2 things) is losing money.

Just a question how much is Sony in debt?

Two things I just wanted to point out using the poll from yesterday and today:

#1
Got PSP?
No, I don't play portable games 24.92% 7363

Got Game Boy Advance/DS?
No, I don't play portable games 19.45% 10792

Though it looks like the two options will probably have a similar total at the end of this, I still find it funny that their percentages are lookin' to be much different.

#2-A
Got PSP?
No, I'll stick with my GBA/DS 53.66%

Got Game Boy Advance/DS?
Yes, both of them 30.43%
Yes, a DS 7.1%
Yes, a GBA 36.44%
TOTAL VOTES 73.97% (not the poll's total, but the three options' total)

#2-B
Got PSP?
Yes, with the latest firmware 8.77%
Yes, but I'm sticking with 1.50 7.45%
Yes, but what's firmware? 5.2%
TOTAL VOTES 21.42% (not the poll's total, but the three options' total)

Got Game Boy Advance/DS?
No, I'll stick with my PSP 6.58%

Behold, the power of focus in a poll. If one was to get creative with it, one could argue this favors the idea of pic-factor heavily.

I would think Sony would realize they're losin' money on most of their products nowadays, and should maybe stick to being a gaming company...

...I'd be surprised if I heard that news from them though.

Just a question how much is Sony in debt?

As of June 30th, 2004, it's 6.71 trillion yen ($61 billion). Considering Sony debt rating was lowered again recently, I can only assume it's gotten quite a bit worse since then.

On a side note... I've been thinking about my contest entry. Halo 2 could wind up anywhere from being top 10 to being nowhere near the top 10. Wouldn't it be safer to go with a surefire 11th place game? Even if it doesn't make top 10, you still wouldn't get penalized that much if it's off one or two from the top 10 right? :-/

The problem with a sure-fire 11th place game is that there are about ten-fifteen games that fit that description. I would take Halo 2 off though, for sure; I still stand by my sig-bet offer with anybody who thinks any write-in game will make the Top Ten.

People figured out that they can't build anything worth a damn. I'm not solely talking about gaming systems here, either. Sony got into trouble with their entire product line and historically pathetic customer service.

the real problem is that there's nothing to discuss - there's no x vs. y. the closest thing we have is CT/SMB3/SSBM.

I'm hoping we get a full list so I can take the top 64 and turn it into a bracket. I'd be curious about how many upsets we'd have.

Exactly. Aside from the Super Seven, there's so much possible interesting filler it's not even funny - and let's not even get into the possibility of part of the aforementioned Super Seven to be left out. Looking at the BOP sheet, such filler is:

Halo
Starcraft
SM64
FF10 (my pick)
GTA:SA (my other pick)
MGS
SMW
Halo 2
Super Metroid
FF8
Kingdom Hearts (my do-or-die pick)
MGS2
Diablo 2
Half-Life 2
Metroid Prime
Wind Waker

Nasty. That's just plain nasty. In the end, I had to pick 3 out of these 16. Okay, some of them are arguable, especially near the bottom... but I'm wary.

FF7

CT

..FF6?

while they're all in my top 10, I wouldn't say they're mortal locks. the top five, yeah, but I don't know about FF6.

FF6 gets more than enough love to be part of any elite group.

And on the topic of Halo 2, I don't quite see it in the top 10, but I fully expect it to be close at the very least. Leaps and bounds ahead of every other write-in, at the very least. (And it's not going to come from the board, because here ToS is the one filling these shoes.)

Fun with numbers: Console ownership, June vs. October.

PS2: 76.72% -> 75.75% (-0.97%)
Gamecube: 69.19% -> 69.74% (+0.55%)
X-Box: 42.85% -> 40.25% (-2.60%)
DS: 32.05% -> 37.53% (+5.48%)
PSP: 16.45% -> 22.16% (+5.71%)

Additionally, GBA since December: 73.95% -> 66.87% (-7.08%)

DS and PSP have similar growths, which is impressive for the DS since it's been out longer and less people didn't have it to begin with. The Gamecube has a slight increase, vs. a slight drop for PS2 and a semi-large one for X-Box. GBA dropped like a rock in the past 10 months. Ouch.

Stupid SFF.

...what exactly is the problem with Kirby over Squall? People change all the time from year to year, and people supported Bowser over Squall even before the Spring.

Not that I think that's how it would actually go, though. I'm pretty sure that Bowser overperformed on Snake.

Well for me I'm basing Ganon off of Ganon seems right if you ask me.

1. Sephiroth - 38.22% +6.84%
2. Ganondorf - 31.97% 0.00%
3. Bowser - 30.95% -0.09%
4. Diablo - 22.25% -0.05%
5. Revolver Ocelot - 21.05% 0.00% (I used him to adjust Pac-Man)
7. Kefka - 20.43% +0.38%
15. CATS - 15.01% +2.63%
25. Wesker - 12.12% +2.13%

I think Sephiroth underperformed on Bowser and Ganondorf (but was at his 2k5 strength against the rest) Bowser, Diablo and Kefka are in the range. CATS may have gotten anti-MC votes and Wesker was killed by Angel Kefka.

Then again my stats are different then yours.

...say what? Spring Bowser isn't nearly that strong. Adjusting 2k5 down to Spring Bowser means a change from 36.54 to 34.79, which is a difference of nearly two percent, and which is also much more reasonable IMO. I don't believe Kirby > Zelda for a second.

That number assumes Sephiroth is at 43% on BL. Unless you believe he went nuclear in a matter of a couple months it's pretty safe to assume that he's closer to 49% on BL as per the summer result (which if taken straight across makes Bowser look like he should have beaten Snake and could have taken anyone up to Samus). Seriously, this is one of the reasons people think the stats are no good, they look at the numbers and don't even bother taking the time to figure out glaringly obvious mistakes in them. The numbers aren't bad, but people seriously need to look at them in the correct context.

Which is pretty clear when you look at it. Well, Vergil not being fodder is a little odd, but whatever. Sephiroth wasn't facing Bowser and Ganondorf, he was facing Super Mario Bros. and the Legend of Zelda. Which sorta explains why Ganondorf did better when, 2003 fluke aside, he was always the weaker one.

No, no it's not. Why would Kirby SFF Bowser? It just...makes no sense.

And please don't say SSBM SFF, Mega Man got more SFF on Yoshi than Link did, and I'm pretty sure that Mega Man isn't in SSB/M.
