I'm sure it's because of Knuckles/Magus, but I keep getting this
feeling that Knuckles would win the match. picking against Knuckles
just scares me after he screwed me so bad.

That kind of attitude had people getting Kerrigan to the Sweet 16 last time though.
Facing Magus there, duh.

I was about to make a joke about Knuckles being able to win if
Knux/Luigi was in the first round...but Knuckles and Luigi both have
been one-and-outs for every year they've made the contest. Luigi's
always been seeded higher Knuckles too, now that I look at it.
Just fun-facts.

yeah, but Kerrigan was an untested character who was weak as hell. Knuckles actually beat the division favourite.

Kerrigan was untested, but Blizzard
wasn't. After Starcraft and Diablo, people were mighty scared of
anything with Blizzard's namesake coming out and ****ing up their
brackets.
As for the Samus situation, again...I don't take too much stock into her Lara massacre (who had plenty of reason to be overrated in 2k3, as well as plain just fall off the face of the earth after she was dropped entirely after AoD), and we never had a good number on Fisher after the 2k3 debacle. Her annihilation was more shocking thanks to Magus overrating Fisher than anything else.
---
For the first time ever, Solid Snake has made the Final Four! Believe it.

we never had a good number on Fisher after the 2k3 debacle.
Yeah, but Fisher did get a new game between 2k3 and 2k4. That match also made Gordon look far worse than he did in 2k3, so it's obvious that something was amiss. Both Sam and Gordon look far better now than they did last year. I'd put more stock into a Ryu overperformance on Sonic than anything else.

No, I was actually referring to Lara overperforming due to the second Tomb Raider movie releasing on the weekend of the match. The votals for that match are also EXTREMELY high for a match of those two's caliber, which suggests something went awry there.
Yeah, but Fisher did get a new game between 2k3 and 2k4.
That only calls for improvement, which doesn't mean that much if you're pathetic to begin with. We don't have a gauge for improvement thanks to Magus, so we don't really know.
That match also made Gordon look far worse than he did in 2k3, so it's obvious that something was amiss.
Meh, if anything, 2k3 could have been the abnormality. 2k2 GF and 2k4 GF aren't really that far off.
Both Sam and Gordon look far better now than they did last year.
GF had HL2, obviously, and Sam Fisher is extrapolated through Master Chief--which is what prompted me to say I was skeptical from the onset.
I'd put more stock into a Ryu overperformance on Sonic than anything else.
Perhaps an overperformance along with whatever Samus could have done (seeing as he and KOS-MOS were the biggest disappointments by far), but it doesn't satisfy my questions. I don't think Samus was ever that legitimately strong, or Mario was ever legitimately that weak. Of course, it could be nothing, and just backlash from Mario v. Crono underrating Mario or something like that, but it just doesn't sit well with me.

Zelda's match with Snake was #1 this tournament, and her match with Vivi was #7. She's a great vote draw.

If Snake underperformed against Bowser, then he probably
did the same against Zelda. Nope, I can't believe that his pictures
made much of a difference. Vivi and Ryu are low enough, anyway. :P

I'd take Luigi over Knuckles...Nintendo characters in general boosted
quite a bit more than Sonic did, and Luigi (along with Kirby) received
the largest boost of them all. Knuckles wouldn't have beaten Luigi by
much before this year (at best).

Zelda's match with Snake was #1 this tournament, and her match with Vivi was #7. She's a great vote draw.
But not THAT great--her match with Lara is the number 3 highest voted match of all time between non-Noble Niners, right on the heels of Squall/Luigi and Tidus/Ganon (which was close).
The other thing was, that even though the trends of 2k3 were to gain more and more votes in the later rounds, she couldn't match the total votes of her match with Lara in her second round match against Mega Man.
She's closer to a stronger Mega Man in 2k2 than he is in 2k3.
LOL, WDF.
But on a more serious note, Samus is NOT closer to Mega 2k2 than Mario is to Mega 2k3 (Mario and Mega are in a dead heat in 2k3, their performances on Sephiroth were nearly identical). I'm skeptical that Mega Man was ever any weaker in 2k3 than he was in 2k2. And I'm EXTREMELY skeptical that Samus, with no games backing her up other than Super Metroid, was able to surpass Mario in what may very well have been his best year, stats be damned. Call it WDF, call it Mario underperforming against Link, but whatever you call it, I don't buy Samus being stronger.
---

WDF never existed. MM was constant from 2k2 to 2k3 and Link obviously
rose a lot. With Mario being SFF'ed and the KHF more than half of the
characters that returned were obviously up, and the ones that looked
like they weren't were from the same area because they were amoung the
few that we got a good read on.

By the way, does anyone have that bracket based on board nominations I
concocted during the nomination period? I'm sure some freak has all
these topics archived and laughs his ass off at how stupid we once were
(and if that's the case, don't bother looking after 187, I remember it
being the one where the whole George Romero thing went down).
Anyway, if anyone finds the bracket, it'd be fun to predict it after the contest is done with.

I'm sure some freak has all these topics archived and laughs his ass off at how stupid we once were
*cough*
I won't be home for another 10 and a half hours or so though so you'll have to wait until then.
TRE's archives them, but it seems like it only goes up to a certain point. we'll have to get him in here. I'd rather like to read pre-contest predictions myself, just for humour's sake.
I archived all the stats topics starting from when the nominations opened to when the contest closes for the Spring and Summer 2005 Contest. For older topics you need to check sc2k4.com. Unfortunatly there is a large gap between when sc2k4 stopped archiving topics and when I started so a lot of topics were lost.

We need a 128 game contest starting in the winter.

...and two matches a day at that.
a 128 character or game match with two polls side by side is an idea that i've always supported. vote totals for each match would be a little lower than usual, but i still think it would work.
also, over five hours without a post? ah, the off-season is nice. now i might be able to keep up. ^_^

Jman_gamerX8 - i had no idea who this guy was until he whomped us all in the Guru Contest.
