Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 264

Luigi seems high, and KOS-MOS seems low.

Answer: Tifa, Vincent and Aeris are in a three-way dead heat, Luigi got the biggest boost out of anyone that's not a pink puffball, and KOS-MOS still found a way to underperform, or drop, or something.

Something a lot of people don't take into consideration for Samus vs Mario:

54.23% of the brackets had Mario moving into the Final 4.
49.86% of the brackets had Samus moving on to the Elite 8.

This means, at LEAST 4.37% more people had Mario winning that match, than Samus.

As I said in the other topic, rigging the stats for cosmetic value is just wrong.

And yet you have Samus above Mario. Makes sense.

Indeed it does, since anything else sends Samus anywhere between 44 and 48%. Samus did great before facing Mario, but not THAT great.

Yes there is. If you overestimate him, you overestimate Squall, Dante, Magus and Knuckles.

Didn't someone propose adjusting everyone else down while leaving Vincent where he is, on the assumption that his strength increased mid contest? May I ask what was wrong with that suggestion?

No, it really doesn't. Some of you people are too obsessed with keeping past numbers around as long as possible. These are the Summer 2005 stats, not the Summer 2005 With Old Numbers Thrown In Out of Nowhere For No Reason Other Than So The Stats Can Continue To Look Similar To Older Sets Of Stats stats.

Absolutely nothing. But that goes against everything the Xst hardcore believe in, because every character has to be linked no matter what.

I was the one who threw the idea around. However, Cloud pretty much failing to do anything of note suggests to me that it was either a spike similar to the one that caused Mario to beat Cloud, though to a much lesser magnitude, or a combination of that and facing Crono, causing some "rSFF", if you'd call it that way.

We don't know the effect AC had on vincent vs. crono, if any. It had a fraction of the exposure then that it does now. A very, very small fraction at that. The subtitles had come out barely before the match.

For the record, I do think that AC made a difference of a couple percents for Vince, Cloud, and Sephy. Almost 200,000 torrents of Advent Children have been downloaded, and that's only taking into account torrents.

I would suggest adjusting the Devil Division sans Vincent based on 2003 Dante, then leaving Vincent as is based on his match with Crono.

See, I thought the fact that Cloud and Sephiroth did so close to what you'd expect was evidence they HAD gotten AC Boosts. I mean, if memory serves almost every other Nintendo character got a significant boost over 2k4. Why then, not Link? I mean sure he did a little better against Cloud, and about what you could expect on Seph given the SFF in C-S 2k4, but with the boosts to all the other chars, I don't think it's too far out there to suggest the mutual boosts canceled each other out?

Indeed, going through Alucard Ganon got quite a large boost from 2k4 to 2k5, I don't see why Link wouldn't.

Also, Samus and Ganon should be adjusted separately, since there was likely SFF in Samus/Ganon.

Since I'm bored, I made a list of characters that should come back or be in the contest for the first time, as well as characters that they could replace.

Characters that need to return

Aeris
Shadow the Hedgehog
Fox McCloud
Tails
Bomberman
Jill Valentine
Ken Masters
Raiden
Strider Hiryu

Characters that deserve a shot

Rufus Shinra
Falco
Midna
Vaan
Ashe
(maybe a third FFXII character, depending on how popular it is)
Yoshimitsu/Nightmare
Sub-Zero
Captain Falcon

Characters that need to go

Wesker
Lloyd
Zidane
Cecil
Terra
CJ or Vercetti
Yuri
Big Boss (unless Ceej acknowledges that he's in MGS3)
Manny
Agent 47
Sam Fisher
Kerrigan
Geno
Conker
Laharl

Just something to throw out there.

I'm not sure why Zidane has to go. He was in one match, and he most likely got SFF'd right out of it. Also, Rufus does not belong in this contest, period. There are too many PCs that would slap his ass around the poll all day long that haven't been in yet. Along with that, Falco has no place in the contest before Fox (And I say that liking Falco more than Fox) and there's not enough room to have both.

Now then, I have a request. To save myself, and probably everyone else, a lot of time and trouble does anyone have the complete stats as of Seph's ending value on Link? I have it with Seph at 44.75, but I'd like to get my numbers up to the final results without redoing them myself. I have some adjusting of my own to do, ya know?

The first option is actually making a comeback in the poll... it's only down by about less than 400 now, and it was down by several thousand later. Too bad no one cares since it's not a character battle...

And ceej always leaves some room for extra polls of the day at the end of the contest so as to not breack up the matches but to insure that if there's a need/desire he cna have a poll in the middle of the contest.

As much as I like Falco, we need to concentrate on Fox more. Falco would probably end up being pretty weak, whereas Fox would be able to hold his ground. He didn't get a very fair shot at things in 02 and 03, and needs to come back. If we tried for Falco AND Fox, they'd most likely split the nominations enough so that neither got in again..

Yo. While I spend hours in a traffic jam, people take the liberty to ***** and moan and complain about a situation people have been trying to get around for a week, to no avail. If only stupid Snake scored half a point less on Mario, we would be having none of that bickering. I also find it funny how it was known for days that there was no known way to give both Samus and Mario a decent value that'd have Mario on top without ****ing with over half the field (read: give undeserving characters *coughcronocough* the standard baton for this year), but the board erupts now that the contest is over. For what? Two characters that are as even as you get until they face each other.

Can't wait to see what Ulti can whip up. If hordes of people brainstorming for a week can't match what Ulti can do right off the top of his head, I'm making a golden idol of the guy.

most people wait for the final x-stats before they pay attention. just ignore it, it'll subside. sadly, had you simply made up a value, no one would be complaining and about 1% of the people would even notice.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet my life on giving Samus an arbitrary value of 41.94%, everyone would shut the hell up.

Seriously, I have no idea what kind of problem people have with there being no difference between SFFing someone pegged to get 50.48% on you rather than 49.99%. People need to get over the psychological barrier that 50.00% means anything other than the barrier that separates a win from a loss.

If there is another best game ever contest next Spring, these are some games (who weren't in the first one) that I could see doing well:

- World of Warcraft (I have a feeling this game will be a powerhouse)
- Resident Evil 4
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
- Final Fantasy VIII (...sadly)
- God of War
- Devil May Cry 3
- any Kirby game
- GTA: San Andreas
- Diablo II (we need to get this game in)
- Kingdom Hearts II (when it comes out)
- Half-Life 2
- Halo 2 (it will be even stronger than its predecessor)

Maybe even Final Fantasy XI (Once again, sadly...)

the people who are against the x-stats take them more literally than we do. they look at them and see 1. Samus and 2. Mario and get mad because it means Samus would beat Mario, even though the value is barely any different. the funny part is that Samus > Mario is inconsequential since there's nobody between them and no one would take Samus over Mario anymore.

Yeah... I mean, they're so far behind Sephiroth and so far ahead of Crono it's of no interest. The X-Sts are just there for, well, being there. They're an approximative "science", not an exact one, there's no way around it.

Makes me think, Vyse belongs in 64th much less than Samus belongs in 4th, and his ranking matters just as much since he'll never be in position to win a match ever again, so why isn't there any outroar for him?

I've been wondering this: with all these weird forms of SFF people are talking about, why isn't Vyse/Tifa one of them? they're both RPG characters, after all. I know Cloud beat him in a way that lined up statistically, but Cloud is far stronger and from the same game. Cloud probably suffered from some anti-voting as well, more than Tifa did.
---
Jman_gamerX8:Link::me:Jay Solano.
From: Lopen | Posted: 9/23/2005 5:29:35 PM | Message Detail
Eh, I've always thought that if Laharl was in the previous contests and had the 8 seed that he would have beaten Vyse in a similar manner. I think Vyse and Laharl are probably for all practical purposes equal, and that a match between them is decided only by things like bracket support and picture.

The reason people aren't complaining is that Vyse's position, is because while seemingly low, it at least doesn't directly contradict any of the current contest's results.

Raiden fact of the contest: Jman_gamerX8 puts not only Lopen's bracket making skills to shame, but also Raiden's... unheard of!
