Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 264
From: transience | Posted: 9/22/2005 9:38:39 PM | Message Detail
yeah, these are our arguments:

1. Samus and her entire division, since it seems we're split 50/50 on whether to adjust her to 42% or 38%
2. Vincent and how strong he's going to be, and if his division is overrated or not
3. Zelda characters and TP
4. the xbox 360 and what it means to the contest
5. Cloud and the ff7 gang and their numerous spinoffs coming up; also, KH2 (if it's out) and possibly a voter shift with ff12 (if it's out)

there are others, but those are probably the biggest ones.

Don't forget about the biggest argument we've had yet (and will surely have again): Solid/Sora SFF.

That argument STILL makes me mad about how ridiculous it got.

More seriously though, another argument that comes up every year will start to get bigger around the end of November: what the 2005 Game Of The Year will be.

Based on those stats, Mario would be projected to beat Sonic with 55.45% of the vote...I know it's nigh-impossible to compare figures from year to year, but it seems like setting Samus and Mario equal to each other in the 2k5 adjusted stats might be the fairest compromise we can reach. It would seem as though they would perform similarly against most characters.

I think everyone should do their own stats this year. (I already butchered mine trying to do them when I was 99% asleep - go me.) as I've said before, I'm not worried about Samus as much as I am people like Frog or Yuna. they're the ones that we don't have anything close to a good read on.

Already plan to, though I'm gonna use some imaginary adjustments on some things due to me simply not trusting some things. Thus, I would hope nobody has much interest in seeing mine.

It's official for sure now: the three characters who have lost in the ToC are the three most impressive losers in the contest. The one who hasn't lost is the winner of the contest. Every character in the ToC has won a bracket before. The weakest link of the ToC is able to keep the sixty-four other characters at least 3.85% away from him.

Behold, their dominance.

Time for me to go to bed. G-nite.

Now that the contests over, time for what IMO should become a tradition.

(Note for the clueless: None of this is my work, it was done after the 2k3 contest. I am reposting it because it owns. All adoration/praise/love letters should be directed to the authors, listed below.)

Sung to Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

Summer Contest Rhapsody
By Funkadelict and Aeon Azuran

Is he a cheater?
Is he just quality?
The poll is a landslide, we escape from reality.
Open your eyes, look up at the board and see.

I'm not a fanboy,
Stop making fun of me
Because it's easy win, easy lose,
Man, this board's too full of n00bs.

Anytime the polls close,
Doesn't really matter to me.
To me...

Ceejus, just flamed a mod
Said some things that can't be said
He got pissed, and now I'm dead.

Ooooh, just became a vet
But now I've suicided it away

Ceejay, oooooh, can you hear the fanboys cry?
If the kiddies don't wake up this time tomorrow
Argue on, argue on
Because the board just doesn't matter.

Crono: Mario, your time has come
The polls draw to the line
Too bad you don't have extra time... DAMMIT!

Magus: Goodbye, everybody, I'd pwn you all
But the stupid bracket voters can't see the truth

Ceejay, Ooooh,
I don't wanna lie
I sometimes wish you'd never done this at all

(HEAVY ROCK SOLO... featuring CLOUD on guitar!)

I see a tiny silhouetto of a man
Olimar, Olimar, he is pimping his pikmin!

Kefka: THUNDERBOLTS AND LIGHTNING! LETTUCE IS QUITE FRIGHTENING! Uweeheehee!

Pikachu: Pika Pika!
Fox: Shut the hell up.
Pikachu: Pika pika!
Vercetti: Shut the **** up!!
Pikachu: Pika pika pika *BLAM*
Ryu: Hadoooooooooken!

Megaman: I'm not a real boy, nobody loves me!
Square and Nintendo fanboys: He's just a robot from a dumb company!
Spare him his life, let him not face Sephy!

Cheater: Stuffing votes is a sin,
But there's money up to win!

Crono: C-Jay-C!
Ceej: NO! We will not let you win!
Fans: Let him win!
Crono: C-Jay-C!
Ceej: We will not let you win!
Fans: Let him win!
Crono: C-Jay-C!
Ceej: We will not let you win!
Fans: Let him win!
Ceej: Will not let him win!
Fans: Let him win!
Ceej: Will not let him win!
Crono: Never, ever, ever, ever, let me win!

Fans: No, no, no, no, no, no, no!
Mario: Oh, mama mia, mama mia, mama mia, now I win!

Beelzebub has a board hell set aside for me...
For me...
For meeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
(Raiden sings the very very high note as the song goes into FULL ROCK MODE!)

Lara: So you think TJF will help you survive?
Pacman: Think being old-school will keep you aliiiiive?

Board Users: Ohhhh, Cjay... can't do this to us, Cjay...
Ceej: You just gotta calm down, just gotta calm down now, y'hear?

Oooh.... ooh yeah, ooh yeah...

(Quiets down again as the song nears the end)

So now it's done and over, the SC2K3...
Nothing really matters...
CATS: All your votes are belong... to me...

Any time the polls close...

Clearly Link is failing to outdo what Cloud did against Sephiroth is because Link is underperforming against Sephiroth just like he did in 2K2. ;) Hey, maybe that's not impossible... this is probably more likely to be legit, though.

Indeed. I like how Sephiroth came out and impressed after quite a few were calling for him to have a very close match, or lose, against the main bracket winner.

But yeah, quite the performance by Sephiroth from both last round and this round.

I expect the board vote can't be favoring "it was boring, I'm glad the old polls are back", expect it to gain some % during the day...

...

Man, what a bust the ToC was. Left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Link over Sephiroth is the one result I really didn't want to see come out of that. Eh... whatever. And Sephiroth and Mario both did crappier than I would have liked them to, even in a loss... blech!

I think I would've been happier had it never happened... the "Super Mario" hyped by the contest being punked back down below 40% on Link (I think) was supremely disappointing.

At least there might have been some mystique on where Mario and the rest of the bracket really stands without it...

I have the same rankings as you do. I actually didn't think 2k5 was that great of a contest - it taught us a lot, sure, but it didn't have any matches that will be called classics. I think we should play rank the matches instead:

1. Sonic/MM
2. TV/Kefka
3. Bowser/Snake
4. Pac-Man/Ocelot
5. Knuckles/Magus

I might be missing one, but those were our best.

As for why I have Summer 2003 over Summer 2005, we've reached an age in these contests where even the unexpected isn't all that unexpected. Even things like Knuckles > Magus and Pac Man > Ocelot can be predicted if you look into the stats hard enough (kudos to Leon and Guy for actually doing it). Back in 2003, the unexpected was just that: really damned shocking.

I'd like to give a special thank you to the extrapolated standings for ruining a good deal of the luster that these contests once had. Excitement and hanging on every update still happens every now and then, but it's just not what it used to be due to the matches no longer being about who wins and more about pinpointing exactly where the characters are supposed to land, right down to the last .01%. Even in the closest matches we had this year (MC/DK, Squall/Vincent, Sonic/Mega Man, etc), I just didn't feel the same excitement that I felt with, say.... Starcraft/Halo or Mario/Crono 2003.

CJayC changing the poll starting time and agreeing to a site layout change also has a lot to do with this, I might add. Comebacks aren't what they used to be, because the character in the lead often has a second night vote to fall back on.
