So if a couple of old games being repackaged to people who were already fans of the Zelda series increased Link's popularity nearly 10%, I shudder to think what an actual new game would do for him.

TP will be bought mostly by Link fans, while those people buying a GC may not be Link fans previously.

You don't buy a GC only for LoZ, you know.

But if you get an LoZ game with it, you'll eventually play it even if you've never heard of it before.

It essentially did for Link what KH did for Cloud, introducing them to a relatively new audience.

Why not? If tp is marketed correcting it could be one of the top selling games in this generation of consoles.

You act as though Cloud has nothing going in his favor. Kingdom Hearts II, Advent Children, and any potential role in Dirge of Cerberus or Crisis Core -- on top of any potential demographic switch thanks to the variety of big Square titles that will be coming out -- would result in him increasing by a good percentage himself. People can foolishly claim Link for 55%+ like they did this year, but it isn't going to happen.

I don't think that it's going to be one of the greatest games of all time (that's the kind of expectation that leads to a game turning into a disapointment), but it well probably still be very, very good. It won't have a problem outselling wind waker, or being the top selling gamecube game as long as nintendo does a proper job marketing it, and it's all but obvious that they well. It's already been the feature of a nintendo power cover. They're going to do everything in their power to make it as successful as possible because they know that the zelda series is possibly the best thing they have going for them in north america.

I'll check up on that and see if I can put something together. The highest selling game of the generation was Super Mario 64, though. Goldeneye 007, Final Fantasy VII, and Ocarina of Time all within the top 5.

To be fair the anomoly that is mario vs. cloud 2k2 makes it hard to know just how much kh really did. I'd base it off of how much it did to sephiroth myself, but I'm unsure how big cloud's role was, and sephiroth is, from what I've heard just an optional boss.

With the starring role in a movie that's been downloaded a few hundred thousand times and has clearly benefited both Vincent and Sephiroth, Cloud still managed to lose to Link worse than last year, when Link didn't have anything going for him other than a new TP trailer that came out 4 months ago. Twilight Princess is going to be bigger than anything short of a FFVII remake for Cloud.

Incidentally, I just looked at the torrent site that I use and the number of times AC has been downloaded is now in the 180,000 range. And that's just torrents. P2P is much easier for the layperson to use, even if it comes with lots of annoyances, so I'd guess that at least that amount of people have downloaded it through other means. That's quite remarkable.
