Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 263
From: HaRRicH | Posted: 9/22/2005 1:19:37 PM | Message Detail
Since I don't have a list for me to avoid lots of math, I'll pick two fodderish characters to do for ya: Kerrigan and Agent 47.

--Kerrigan would get 55.4% on unadjusted CJ.
--Agent 47 would get 55.69% on unadjusted CJ

Hope that helps out.

Heh, now that I did that, I didn't realize how close Kerrigan and Agent 47 really are.

Kerrigan VS Agent 47, who wins (assume she gets the same pic as she did against Vincent)? Also, how big of a difference would Kerrigan getting her face-shot from Brood War make in this match?

HaRRicH, Kirby in SSBM is just awful. Even casuals aren't a big fan of him. I doubt he'd get much SFF there.

And...if Seph would SFF Squall, what about Auron/Vivi? Auron being SFF'd by Seph certainly looks good for Ganon. I'd like to see adjustments for Ganon's half-division that use Auron-through Tails...is that much different from using Spring Ganon?

As a side-note, Link has now broken 55%. Here's to hoping he finishes this way.

Thanks to you too ShadowOwns. Sheesh, now that the contest is over, despite sucking horribly in this contest (129/216, how 'bout that?), I now get props and recommendations to be on the analysis crew? Granted, score doesn't determine knowledge and I like the props, but, come on now.....

HaRRicH, Kirby in SSBM is just awful. Even casuals aren't a big fan of him. I doubt he'd get much SFF there.

From personal experience, all the casual gamers that I have gotten to give SSB/M a chance have been quick to pick Kirby. That's not to say everybody does or even a majority, but I don't think that's worth throwing out the window either. Even if the casuals aren't a big fan of him, it's a tough argument to say Bowser's got more of a fan following in SSBM than Kirby does in SSB and/or SSBM.

And...if Seph would SFF Squall, what about Auron/Vivi? Auron being SFF'd by Seph certainly looks good for Ganon. I'd like to see adjustments for Ganon's half-division that use Auron-through Tails...is that much different from using Spring Ganon?

I don't have the adjustments for that, though I think you're right that the two values are close. However, it's still tough to say that Ganon (and Samus) have suffered as much SFF as it takes for Ganon to be comparable with his VC-value against Sephiroth. Not that it's impossible, mind you...but didn't the Samus/Ganon match turn out nearly as expected? Also, before the contest started, it was common belief that Mario/Samus would have no SFF (not that everyone agreed, but it was still common belief). Now, suddenly, both stats and our common beliefs are wrong enough to bring Ganon back up that high? While it's possible, especially with the Auron-through-Tails bit, I remain skeptical of there being that much SFF.

It's misleading; I pronounce it like "each", personally. I just think it'd look stupid trying to spell it like that, heh, so I push the boundaries with this.

I too recommend Harrich to be on the next contest analysis crew for having more deliberative, unbiased, informative posts than most other users during the course of the contest. Although his correct pick percentage by match might be a liability, there's always room to improve.

Hmmkay. Sephiroth is now pegged at 47.74% on BL, decent increase from last year. Link currently has 55.20% on him, which puts him at 53.28% on BL, stable from last year, and Cloud at 50.68%, slight drop from last year. Hum. Seph goes up, but Cloud goes down... and Link seems unaffected by the Nintendo boost. Hmm.

It was always theorised that Sephiroth got SFF'd in '04, (There were any number of reasons proposed why that didn't happen in '03, the most likely one IMO being Cloud was getting revenge antivoted) and it looks like that was indeed the case, because '04 Link was supposed to get 58% on Sephiroth.

Harrich is one of the best posters in this topic. He actually responds to people rather than just ignoring stuff. And he can reason pretty well. He would do good on the analysis crew. I pronounce his name with an "ick" though.

My bracket overall was really good. Samus and Magus screwed me over though, and I somehow didn't have faith in Sora or Kirby for the sweet 16, and I didn't trust Ness or Pac to win either. Those were my only mistakes, but they costed me. My alt had Mario > Samus though, and it got on the top 50 for a day after Mario beat Crono, which was awesome.

Hey now, my Summer 2k4 and Villain brackets looked great (both times, too much faith in a character involved in a debated match kept me from the leaderboard and prizes; thanks, Mario and Ridley). My Game Contest bracket wasn't bad either...it's just this bracket in particular that owned the hell out of me; heck, I might have done worse this time than I did in 2k3.

Next year though, I'm comin' back like Jesus. Just you wait.

Sephiroth has gained since 2002, just like Cloud. I really didn't expect Link to pull 57%+ again. Also, Sephiroth got SFFed last year against Cloud. Hes only a few percentage points away from Cloud in strength.

Heh, it's strange how everyone was talking about how vulnerable Sephy looked after the Villains Contest, and look at him now. Link probably won't even outdo Cloud here.

I really don't think it's a stretch just to think that the Final Four was the flukish part, nothing else. Heck, after seeing Sephy lay the smack down on Mario from start to finish while he at least struggled with Bowser and Ganon for a little while, that seems to be a reasonable conclusion.

Just to argue a lil' bit more, we don't know anything about anybody from Sephiroth's division except Liquid, and we had only seen him from one controversial match the year before...and Liquid was even leading Sephiroth after the first minute, now that I look, heh, so it looks like Sephiroth had to fight off some hate in that match too, even if he beat Liquid worse than expected.

This match makes Bowser and Ganon look way better than before. If you assume that Seph 2k3 = Seph 2k5 (which is what this match seems to be indicating), then Bowser and Ganon are higher than Mario 2k3.

...if you don't acknowledge the AC boost, fo course. I can't imagine anyone still denying it.

Link vs Sephiroth 2k5- 3:00 PST
Link 55.29% 43408
Sephiroth 44.71% 35104
TOTAL VOTES 78512

Link vs Sephiroth 2k2- 3:00 Central
Link 57.56% 39888
Sephiroth 42.44% 29410
TOTAL VOTES 69298

Things have changed quite a bit over the last 3 years. While Link has definitly improved, Sephiroth has also gone up quite a bit. After this point in 2k2, Link started to decrease in percentage while he still seems to be on the rise here.

i have a new idea reguard it as u want but here it goes. How about we disreguard the "NN" concept all together and make it "Clinkeroth" and whatever fancy name u want to make for mario, samus, crono, mm, sonic and snake because as we can tell, as long as link, clound and sephy are in these contests, they are untouchable from anyone but eachother.

The "Noble Nine" still stands though, despite the hell of a test they had to face this year. Although there probably is somebody who could beat somebody in the Noble Nine, this year made me a believer of the term again now that it looks and feels more noble than ever, so to speak.

i know the NN will stand strong forever(maybe not after these new systems but...)but what im trying to say is that the top 3 of the NN will never be scratched by anyone other than those 3 themselves. We need a new term for the 6 remaining NN members that cannot even scratch Clinkiroth as i just explained.

The Noble Nine actually has a better track record than Clinkeroth against outsiders.

Noble Nine: 94-0
Clinkeroth: 38-1

Okay, so that doesn't mean much, but still...

I think if anyone beats a Noble Nine character next year, it's going to be a FF7 character, be it Vincent, Tifa, or Aeris. Okay, maybe not Aeris, depending on whether she appears at all in AC, but that's besides the point. Bowser could conceivably do it too, although he had the best chance he could have this year and blew it.

thats because theres more of the NN than there is of Clinkiroth. But that 1 loss came in the most unpredictable contest to come(because it was the 1st) and there is no way in hell cloud would ever lose again to mario, or for that matter anyone outside link.
