I'm refusing to count out Tifa; I think Sonic's still gonna have his hands full with her.

If Sonic is as high as his performance against Diablo states, Tifa really isn't looking good at all. It would be better for her if he was around his 2004 level.

Meh, you'd still only be 6 points off if you'd picked who the stats had winning. Of course, Magus would do you in, but still. You could've figured out he was overrated using the stats and have lost only 1 point on him. Then you could've accurately figured Sora could beat Alucard since they're so close anyway. Pac-Man/Ocelot would get you as well, but you're looking at a -2 using the stats at face value. Leaderboard, baby.

Indeed, with the voter pool this year we have no idea how strong Luigi was. But in the end, I don't think Tifa has that great of a shot. I give her 2k3 Aeris tops.

But the thing is you can't use stats for the new charaters. Couldn't have used the stats for Ness/CJ, Vincent/Kerrigan, Kratos/Alucard etc.

I still expect Tifa to get 47-48% on Sonic. It's probably going to be a great match pic, as long as Ceej doesn't have anything dumb like Sonic running into Tifa's fist or foot. Sonic DOES have in game positions besides him running CJayC!!!

It would be great to see him grinding down a rail from SA2:B facing towards us or something similar while Tifa is there waiting in battle stance. It can be done if he puts as much time into it as he did for the Mario pic.

And, meh, I doubt that the Spring Contest are as valid as some are making them out to be. Ocelot lost to Pac-Man when he should have won...some of that Pac-Man being underrated and his intrinsic universal knownness, but right off the bat that's a warning sign for the SpC2k5. Then you've got Diablo, who underperformed against Sonic with a link. Sonic might have risen to Crono, and it's quite plausible, but that's a case of not rising to expectations again. Then there's Ganondorf, who underperformed on Yuna. Was it simply FFX-2, or something more? Auron has always potentially been behind SFF, so there was no way to verify him, and Samus/Ganondorf is equally sketchy as well. Then we have Bowser, who is now through the Spring making a character look near-elite that has never shown signs of approaching that level. He did crush Ryu, which gives a lot of credibility to the Spring, but it's not out of the question for Ryu to fall--I don't know who said it first, but he is NOT consistent when in one year you lose to a character 57/43 and then the next you're ranked above him in the unadjusteds.

There are too many questions, and I'm not buying anything until I see Bowser take on Snake once and for all.

Oh, but I do consider the SpC2k5 rankings helpful, much more so than our older ones. I just think that they're going to be off in many instances because the vote totals for the SC2k5 are so much higher.

I'd actually like Squall coming down on Vincent with a KH-style Rough Divide (when he yells "It's over" and jump slashes Sora). Add a Dirge of Cerberus Vincent in battle stance or dodging and you would have the perfect match pic! Doubt it will happen though.

Come on now, I wouldn't put much stock on Sonic overperforming on Diablo. Diablo may have some strength, but he still is just Diablo. People may vote for him over midcarders like Kefka, but I believe he folds nonlinearly against a favorite. The more popular the character, the more I think Diablo would fold. Put him up against Cloud or Link and I think he gets raped even worse.

Blame Snake for sucking it up, not Ryu. =P For the record, I fully expected that Snake would be underrated in last years stats and he would bounce back somewhat. I looked more at how he directly performed against Knuckles and Mega Man rather than his final ranking in the stats, which I already looked at as suspect.

From: Karma Hunter | Posted: 9/8/2005 10:20:54 PM | Message Detail
Yes, but why would Diablo fold so much worse at the hands of Sonic? By then I'd think if you're going to vote Diablo over Ganondorf, that shows a genuine like of a character over another. I can't see so many more voting him over Sonic without some legitimate strength to Sonic.

Either that, or as I suggested, the higher votals comprise a lot of people who don't know or care about Diablo and others from the Spring (Ocelot), and so he does worse. I think now that Ocelot might have beaten Pac-Man with SpC2k5 votals.

Based off of a steady Diablo, Vyse, and Sephiroth ('cuz I don't know where the majority of us agreed he's at now), Tifa beats Sonic with 51.93%. Now, we should keep in mind that the new voting shift has likely affected Sephiroth and possibly Vyse, and we should also keep in mind Diablo got linkage against Sonic (unlike his match against Ganon).

As for Luigi, based off of a steady KOS-MOS, Luigi would get 33.24% on Link 2k4; keep in mind Sonic 2k4 is expected to get 33.56% on Link 2k3 and KOS-MOS had a new game, as well as Tifa got 53.36% on Luigi this year. This allows Tifa to get 52.93% on Sonic 2k4 and 45.39% on Sonic-through-Diablo.

I used some selective stats, granted (I didn't consider if Luigi was steady from 2k4 to 2k5 or if Sephiroth dropped more, for example), but I'm not buying Sonic having an easy way out of his match against Tifa yet, not at all. There's still a good case to be made for her.

Sonic-through-Diablo - 39.25% on Link 2k4
Tifa-through-Vyse - 40.86% on Link 2k4
Luigi-through-KOS-MOS - 33.24% on Link 2k4
Sonic 2k4 - 33.56% on Link 2k4
Tifa-through-Luigi-through-KOS-MOS - 35.63% on Link 2k4

Come on now, I wouldn't put much stock on Sonic overperforming on Diablo.

I find that it could very well be Sonic's legitimate strength, as opposed to something to blame on Diablo. I've never really bought into the idea of a character "collapsing" against an elite character. Sonic's performance puts him within a reasonable area given how the contest has gone thus far.

Not to say that it is the truth or anything, I just would say that it remains likely given how the contest has gone. It doesn't strike me as unreasonable to believe Sonic's strength was quite legitimate in that match.

Then again, I think it's better for me to try to get Sonic as close to his 2004 value as possible. :)

Let me go ahead and call 61.35% calling for Bowser winning the division.

As for Crono/Master Chief, Crono makes MC look worse than Vercetti initially until Master Chief makes himself look respectable during the day with a heavy day vote and such a large gap between him and Crono allowing him to increase percentage rather easily. Let's say he will go from around 29-30% to 35ish range.
