Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 237

I always liked Math better than other subjects growing up. Unlike other subjects, where grading is abstract and you can write what you THINK is one hell of an opinion paper just to see your teacher give you a C, with Math it was either you're RIGHT or WRONG!

Of course it gets more complicated later on... but with Math it was always "show me the numbers"! That was a little inside joke that me and my friends had with my professors. I don't care what you think about the problems and how you derived the answer, just SHOW ME THE NUMBERS so I can see if I did it right or not!!! =P

It's not a paradox. There are many different branches of mathematics; pure math relies only on a few axioms and everything that can be derived from them, while other branches take into account real world observations.

And finally, as for how or why Metal Gear Solid 3 could have led to a boost for Snake (who doesn't even appear in the game) as opposed to Big Boss or Revolver Ocelot (who do):

It's all about appearances, people. The casuals outnumber the hardcore fans here. And most casuals, looking at pictures and names as opposed to actually spending time to analyze the time frame of MGS3, are going to recognize Solid Snake / Naked Snake. They're not going to recognize Revolver Ocelot (who looks nothing in his pic against Pac-Man like he did in MGS3) or Big Boss (who looks nothing like any MGS3 character at all, and who isn't even mentioned by that name until the end of the freakin' game.)

So yes, it's ironic, but Solid Snake is actually more capable of getting a boost from MGS3 than BB and Revolver Ocelot. Had CJC used an MGS3 pic of Revolver, or a Naked Snake pic for Big Boss, the results would have been a little more favorable to the MGS characters, enough so that I'd say Revolver would have lost to Yoshi, not Pac-Man, and BB's loss to Auron would at least be more respectable.

I thought that was a very interesting post from the "This match is OBVIOUS SFF." topic. I don't entirely agree with it, but I thought it was worth posting here.

Snake winning the main bracket would be asking for entirely too much, so I'm just gonna go ahead and hope he loses to Mario by 5 votes.

Summer 2005 Extrapolated Rankings

1. Mario 50%
2. Solid Snake 50%

And the orgasms will be plentiful.

Well, that post is right, for the most part. There is *very* little difference to the average voter between Solid Snake and Naked Snake. Just like Solid, Naked is almost exclusively referred to as 'Snake'. Therefore, you've got a character that looks just like NS, has the word 'Snake' on the picture, and has a name *very* similar to Naked Snake. That has the potential to sway voters.

And it's not exactly like we could really account for how well Snake would dp this year. He's never been in a contest with high votals, AND fresh off a major new game to boot. He may not be anywhere close to Mario/Samus, but I'd say Snake 2k5 > Snake 2k3 without a doubt.

Well clearly Snake winning a contest is sane, as he won the IGN (or Gamespot) one. However, Snake winning this contest is something that should have you getting fitted for a straight jacket with me.

Alright, enough talk about Sora/Snake, Sff, and what-not for now. We'll see at the end of the day.

Question: How legitmate will the TOC be in making X-Stats?

With how unstable they already seem, I'm starting to think that they should just be extrapolated for the main bracket. Whoever reaches Sephiroth is going to get a solid boost for just being the main bracket champion. Even if she(yes, it's gunna be Samus kiddos) loses to him there, that's still going to make everyone look relatively stronger, dropping Clinkeroth inaccurately.

She's not only had several matches to garner facetime, but that match will take place 2 days after she has been crowned the winner of the SC2k5 bracket. That's sure to hold some prestige and votes with it.

There might be nothing to this, but I was just thinking whether it's a possibility. I mean, I'm sure you have most people calling for Sephiroth's toppling on strength of Samus/Mario/whomever and his weakness alone, but I sense wishful thinking from others.

Well, Snake/Sora isn't exactly a Mario/Zero in terms of vote draws. Not only was Mario/Zero on Labor Day, but both characters are pretty decent draws, Mario especially. I'd wager that in addition to school Sora's bringing Snake down in this match, at least partially--Snake/Zelda still holds the highest votals of 2005, and Sora's a sucky draw.

Yeah...I guess I will stick with that term. All right. ^_^

Additonally, running the whole bracket through 1 match leaves it rather unstable. Any under/over performance/pic/theme can change the strengths of the bracket relaitve to our favorite measuring stick - Link. While I'm aware that happens in every standard finals match, nothing is changed for that match. Creating a whole new bracket with characters who have not particpated that season feels different. And in those final matches at least the final competitors have run through 5 other matches so we can think about drops/gains on a more stable level.

Just thank heaven that there's almost no possible combination of SFF possible, but if you see Link and Mario/Samus in the TOC finals, we're going to hear people debating it all off season. Thank goodness we sorted out the non-existance of Cloud/Sephi already.

I regret having ever clicked on that link. I think I somehow became stupider just by reading it. -_-

Considering that response, I don't think that's possible.

Today's match is yet another example of people willing to put an SFF tag on every match they don't understand, which is unbelievably sad,

The match resuls fall exactly in line with my thoughts.

I should have learned my lesson when he tried arguing that FFTA sold more copies than FFT, but meh, I'm bored.

Why, why do you lie about things? You can't even argue about sales.

It's a debate with consolefreak involved. All such situations are on par with George Bush leading an investigation into why federal aid took so long to arrive to New Orleans.

What was your prediction again? 50.47%? Mine was at least above 60%. Wow. How does that make you feel.

consolefreak is the same guy that basically helped Vlado invade the FF7SB a few months back.

Invade? I made a topic, responded to the unnecessary agressiveness, and then left.

Remember Vlado's "Nominate Tifa" topics? One of them got moved from FF7 General to FF7SB. Not only did he refuse to believe that he broke the TOS, but he and console started a massive war with the entire FF7SB and the Tifa topic became one of the most hilarious reads I've ever seen. There are people making themselves look like fools, and then there was Vlado and consolefreak in that topic. Even funnier was the fact that console himself started flooding a bunch of boards with Nominate Tifa topics, including a second one over on the FF7SB. It's a shame that all of this happened before the new mods were picked, really.

What?? I made all those topics about Tifa at the same time. I didn't refuse to believe anything. What are you talking about?? I wasn't flooding anything.

SFF after every match

It's a good thing that I called it before the match then.

Not at home, so I don't have anything concrete handy, but MGS3 didn't sell like complete ass. I'm pretty sure its total sales are comparable to pre-Player's Choice Metroid Prime, which did quite a lot for Samus.

Oh, and...

FFTA US Sales: 510,388
FFT US Sales: ~750,000

Just so you know.
