Analysis

With Nintendo covering 37.50% of the positions this round we are bound to have a few Nintendo vs. Nintendo matches; this is the first one. This is Ganondorf’s first appearance in the Sweet 16 (not including the villains contest). Sadly like most non-noble 9 characters in the Sweet 16 they get crushed. The only thing I care about this much is how much Samus beats him by.

Samus proved that Frog was nothing but an overrated character by just breaking 70% on him. If it wasn’t for Master Chief’s bad performance against CATS and DK many people would’ve chalked this up as a Samus gain. Ganondorf must like Final Fantasy X characters since he’s beaten 3/5 of them already (it could’ve been 4 if it weren’t for Robotnik.). People say that his performance was impressive, but I didn’t really, it was more or less of what I expected from 2k4 Ganondorf.

Samus’ only Nintendo battle was against Link so what I want to find out is if Samus could SFF a strong Nintendo character. Ganondorf is no Mario, but if she couldn’t SFF him there will be a very small chance for her to SFF Mario and with such a match being hyped she’s going to need as many advantages as she can.

Samus could’ve also grown over the year with new games out, but we still don’t know how much and probably won’t until near the end of the contest. Samus is projected to just miss 60%, but in this match she should break it. Unless Ganondorf gets 45%+ on Samus, Mario/Samus should be very interesting.

If Chrono Trigger sprites do make a difference, then doesn't that mean Crono *didn't* increase between 2002 and 2003?

Also, Mario has never been good with the afternoon vote. He lost it to Crono. . . twice! Didn't Crono gain percentage for the entire match last year?

CT sprites help Magus and Frog, not Crono. Crono's normal pic is very good as is.

But, I thought the argument was that the sprites made the characters more recognizable.

And before someone says "Crono's official artwork is just as recognizable as his sprite."

Frog is an anthropomorphic frog with a sword. I doubt people see his sprite, and go "Oh, when it was that other frog with a sword, I wasn't sure who it was, but now I'm positive."

I dunno. Frog's and Magus's sprites look MUCH cooler than their official artwork. Crono pretty much looks the same regardless.

Samus has yet to impress me, as the extent that Frog could be overrated by is potentially by Magus levels. When Magus goes from being projected to BEAT Snake 2k4 to losing to his 60/40 midcarder whipping boy, you know that the same thing is not out of the question for Frog.

with all the talk about Nintendo character SFF, i'm really surprised that noone brought up SSBM. SSBM is the most popular game this generation on this site and it would be absurd to thing that every playable character in that game gains at least some fans from that game. and that's where the SFF comes in to play.

for all we know, some of these SSBM characters could have a third or even half of their popularity from SSBM rather than their own series. after the SFF bashing that Ness took, it seems that more than half of his popularity comes from SSBM. Ganondorf's match against Link showed that he has a very small hardcore fanbase, and Link most likely slammed him with both Zelda series SFF and SSBM SFF.

based on that, i do think that Samus will SFF Ganondorf somewhat because of SSBM and that she will break 65% and possibly even double him tomorrow.

I guess it hasn't been mentioned in awhile that Samus showed signs of increasing if Frog = MC 2k3. Granted, not a huge increase, but goin' from the stats expecting 30.87% to the match gettin' 29.95% is nice to have.

I think Frog and Liquid Snake might be a bit weaker than MC 2003, and that Frog just overperformed against Master Chief in round 2. Don't ask me why... I mean Magus may have done the same in 2003 against Ganondorf in round 2 also. Having a bit of difficulty thinking that Ganondorf made all that jump based on Magus's 2005 rating.

I'd take CF and Falco over Ness as well, but Marth would probably lose. I don't ever want to see CF in the contest though, and I'd much rather see Fox return than Falco making it in somehow. Marth, as good as he is in SSBM, wouldn't stand any chance in popularity.

I'm glad Mario is doing so well here, but I am sad that Zero is losing so badly. I like Lloyd, but I liked Zero enough to vote for him. I also like Mario a whole lot (1. Mario), but feel sorry for Zero anyway.

Oh well, he's done good in seeing his 2nd sweet 16, and his third bow out to a noble niner. Well played Zero, but you were merely an obstacle to the legendary Mario vs. Samus showdown... Until I see what she does to Ganondorf tomorrow, I have NO idea how that match will go. None. Though I'm starting to believe more and more in Mario's chances of winning..

And on another subject, it sucks badly that Yoshi vs. Pac-Man got the LOWEST vote total so far! Ugh! 84k... that's just not fair... at least Yoshi won with a good number though.

This is also the second year where we see a Mario match right after a Yoshi match, we saw it last year. And strangly enough, we go from the lowest vote total, to what will, at this rate, shatter the highest vote total so far.

after this morning, i honestly didn't think Zero would finish above 37%, but if he keeps it up, he just might. go Zero!!

Speaking of SSBM, who would you guys take in the following matches?

Ness vs. Falco
Ness vs. Captain Falcon
Ness vs. Marth

i would have to say:

Ness >= Captain Falcon >= Falco > Marth

Marth would certainly be the lowest because he has only SSBM to draw from. Fox McCloud and Ness both got hammered in 2K3 by SFF, so as a completely wild guess i think they would be even and Falco would be a little below them both. Captain Falcon is tough to beg though, because he would mostly have to draw from SSBM because he has very little actual character in the F-Zero series and there isn't a whole lot that makes him stand out from the rest of the F-Zero cast. so, it's tough to say how much, if any, support he would pull from F-Zero. however, i think he would get enough support to put him at or just below Ness's level.

Well, actually, if you've played F-Zero GX, for instance, Captain Falcon is far more prominent than any of the characters in that game--he is the hero of story mode, and has his own cheesy theme music to accompany him as well. Problem is, I just don't see F-Zero having the greatest of followings here...I don't even know if it would equal Earthbound's.

Fox would beat Tails, and I wouldn't doubt that for a second. Fox could be a decent competitor given the right bracket. It's a shame he got caught with Cloud right off the bat in 2002 and hit with Link in 2003 only after defeating Pikachu.

I think non-SSBM fanbases for Ness and Captain Falcon don't matter. Falcon is more of a fan favorite than Ness is in the SSB games.

i think that Ness, Tails, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Fox would all be very close. i would love to see a mediocre 4-pack of 4 of those 5 characters.

also - if Link really did hammer Fox with as much (or at least a significant amount of) SFF as Mario gave Ness, then that adds further to the theory of SSBM SFF that Samus should give Ganondorf tomorrow. i mean, what do Fox and Link have in common other than SSBM?
