Samus getting 70% on Frog is every bit as impressive as what Mario is doing here. Mario and Samus look to be very close in strength, the match will be decided on which way the SFF swings.

After beating Cloud AND Crono in somewhat (to other people, anyway... I still think Mario > j00 in those matches, and Crono is a filthy cheater and Cloud smells >_<) suspicious circumstances, he would have been anti-voted to hell and back. Coupled with the fact that there would be some SFF in there... well, he'd have done better on a normal day, methinks.

Well, I'll keep this from being too wordy... Look what SMS did to Cloud... Look at how much cheating Crono had to pull off to keep level with Mario, then look at where Crono landed on Mario without cheating. I'm actually believing the only year Crono may have increased was 2k4, and I'm even doubting that.

If anything, I believe Mario may have underperformed against Link in 2002. In two heart-pounding, controversial matches, Mario had taken out Square's two most popular heroes in the span of one week. It's obvious he wasn't very popular with at least part of GameFAQs' core fanbase at this point. On the other side of the bracket, Link was just destroying everything, amazing all of us and leaving no controversy in his wake. I can definitely see pissed off Square fans anti-voting Mario when they had no intention to do so only weeks prior.

I think a 2002-to-2003 boost can be explained for the same reason as his 2003-to-2004 boost. 2002 was quite the miracle run for Crono, and I have no problem believing it got people to play CT more than his 2003 one.

Ryu's extrapolated ranking in 2K4: 32.00% on 2K3 Link.
Bowser beat Ryu with 58.98%; Bowser = 39.01%
Bowser beat Ocelot with 65.99%; Ocelot = 26.53%
Pac-Man beat Ocelot with 51.25%; Pac-Man = 27.21%
