Though for the record, I don't think it's impossible to say that Pac Man was SFFd by Yoshi and Luigi. It's hard to imagine Pac Man being that low natually, then turning around and beating Ocelot. Either Ocelot overperformed to hell and back against Bowser, or his egg laying against Wily and Nemesis were completely legit.

I'm waiting until the end before I make any large assumptions. But my preliminary thoughts are Yoshi/Pac-Man SSF.

Here's the way I see Samus vs Mario, and I why I picked Mario. Well... I'll make a visualization. Here's Mario's fanbase. The core Nintendo fanbase, if you will.

Now we have Samus's. She's got the core Nintendo fanbase, but she also has more outside appeal, I think. Because she's less "kiddy" or something. That explains why she's stronger than Mario.

Now, here's the overlap. I bold the "core Nintendo base" in Samus's.

So I'm thinking, Samus will get SFFed out of the core base, maybe 60-40, and she'll take her outside base 100%. That means she's got 10 units total, and Mario has 12. That's how the "reverse SFF" will work, here.

That's how I've always justified the pick in my head.

So far the biggest non-SFF lost have been from Zelda. Ganondorf and Kirby may suffer SFF (but are projected to lose by more than 40%) and if there was no SFF in Link/Mega Man then Yoshi has a great chance on breaking 40%. The loser of Mario/Samus will get at least 40% and will also likely break 40% against Sephiroth (I have Samus beating him though). That only leaves Bowser and unless he beats Snake he'll also do very well (or get SFF to death next round).

I could see Kirby SFFing Bowser, actually. Kirby fans seem to be more devoted. As in Kirby would be more likely to be higher in a favorites list than Bowser if both were high in the first place. I think mario will take the majority of the SFF, but if itll be enough who knows. Samus and mario got 37% against link. Samus in ranked higher, close to sephiroths level. That means that mario even against link got a higher SFF towards him compared to samus.

Also, that just shows that the hierarchy is usually Link > Mario and Samus. It shows nothing to support that Link > Mario > Samus wouldn't be the more popular choice among the "core base".

There was roughly the same ammount of votes, and Samus did better in voting. Note that Mario/Link was the final match, and Samus still did better the year after. Likewise, Samus's percentage is better.

Now, take into acount Samus's massive boost in 2K4 (which seems to be in fine form in SC2K5) ande Mario staying constant (if not even dropping a little), and you've got the making of a Samus victory.

except that, mario got 38% on sephiroth, so that would mean that link would beat by like 70%. So mario got a large portion of the Nintendo votes. Samus got 42% on cloud, so lets say would get 40 on link. She got 37% though, so link got the majority.

I have a theory on that. Since Mario/Link was the final match, people truley voted on who they like better; the results were alot more true than if that would have happened in, say, round 3.

My theory has some ground if you take into acount Cloud/Sephiroth 03, which was a 51-48 affair, then Cloud/Sephiroth 04, which was 56-44 match.

It's a nice argument for Mario supporters, but I'm not buying it. There's nothing wrong with people liking Mario better than Samus today. Samus has gotten as much exposure as Mario has recently. She has a demo packaged with every DS sold in the US. There's nothing that suggests that fans of both consistently like Mario over Samus.

It IS a valid argument like I said before, but I'm not buying it.

I can see that maybe, MAYBE affecting a marginal number of people that follow the contest. But it's pretty safe to say that's not the majority of voters, who number close to 90,000-100,000 on any given match. A half a percent to a percent is being EXTREMELY generous to that theory.
