Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 228
From: ChichiriMuyo | Posted: 9/1/2005 3:03:39 AM | Message Detail
As a parting gift... my personal ranking of the FF characters in this contest, in terms of Favorites, of course.

Vincent
Vivi
Sephiroth
Tifa
Zidane
Kefka
Auron
Cloud
Terra
Rikku
Cecil
Tidus
Yuna
Squall

And wow, I just realized there are a hell of a lot of FF characters in this year (though 2 are in the ToC). Too bad two of them were absolute scrubs, anyone can replace them next year... but if they get to be Square characters here's hoping for Aeris and Serge.

Sonic got almost 300 last update. If that's a sign of the day vote favoring Sonic by a huge margin... Ouch.

Aaaaaand straight through the bone cage Sonic goes. Jeez, 70% before the day vote? After a pitiful first round, he's at least showing signs of life.

But seriously, what's with the people who think Squall > Tifa? If you're weaker than Squall, you don't fluke a performance even Samus wouldn't do. PERIOD.

Nice to see Sonic pushing 70%. This I think finally shows everyone that Jin was decent fodder and more importantly, nothing was wrong with Sonic from the start.

I wake up to Sonic makin' a run at 70%, and with his legendary day vote he will no doubt hit that figure, making the Ganon/Diablo match seem pretty right on. Gogo Gadget X-Stats!

Ya know, the worse Sonic beats Diablo, the better it makes both Sonic and Jin look. As of right now, Jin would get 39.9% on Diablo, not all that much lower than Ridley.

Of course, but until one of the noble nine characters losses to an "outsider" we will keep the noble nine term :D

..it's such an unbelievably useless term, and it creates a psychological barrier that nine characters can't lose to anyone outside of the circle. Then again, most people just look at the stats and assume that the pattern goes down much farther than through the first nine characters.

I still like the Noble Nine term 'cuz everybody know who you're talkin' about and they've had our respect in contest-strength since the first contest. Once they lose though (which is probably gonna happen this contest), the term's essentially gonna be broken...I guarantee it'll still be used though.

I forget Diablo's exact value, but I've heard him be called Yoshi's equal before the contest, so I'm gonna assume Diablo = Yoshi 2k4 here...but, assuming adjusted Yoshi was constant this year, this currently puts Sonic at 42.01% against Link 2k4...which is damn near on-par with Sephiroth, much like Tifa's performance against Vyse.

In fact, assuming Diablo = Yoshi 2k4 (and Sonic beats Diablo with 30.03%) and Vyse was constant again this year, Sonic'll beat Tifa with 51.37%...hmmm.

That's a yes to Sonic beatin' everybody who's never won a contest before, including Mario. Now, it's still too early to say officially, of course, and this is assuming Diablo = Yoshi 2k4 (since I don't remember his EXACT value)...but, right now, yeah, Sonic > Mario looks realistic.

Sonic is definitely looking impressive in this match. This makes him look capable of taking down megaman and tifa. Hopefully this serves as further proof to people that they shouldn't be assuming things about one character based on a match with another character that has completely unknown strength.

I would expect SSF in a Mario/Sonic match due to the past rivalry between Nintendo and Sega. It wouldn't be as strong as it would have been, say, ten years ago due to Sega's fall to third-party developer.

I seriously doubt it. SMW vs Sonic 2 is an entirely different case. Most people think that Super Mario World is the superior game between the two, but it doesn't mean that they like Mario as a CHARACTER better than Sonic. Games =/= Characters.

The issue's not Jin being underestimated, it's that Sonic is totally mopping the floor with Diablo, to such an extent that based on a constant Sonic, Diablo should've never beaten Bison, and the Kefka match should've been, if not lost, at least very close.

Or maybe Diablo is just overrated. There's the question of how much the Diablo fan sites affected previous results.
From: LeonhartForever | Posted: 9/1/2005 9:42:09 AM | Message Detail
Well, Diablo's final value is based on Ganondorf, a match in which he was not linked.

Based on a constant Diablo, Sonic rises to 41.55% on Link, ahead of Crono. Man, Mario/Sonic this year would be sweet, if only because it'd be completely unexpected. Oh, this also moves Jin up to 19.81%, so we might be calling it the JFL next year, if this is true, heh.

A constant Sonic moves Diablo down to 21.70%, nearly a full percent below Kefka. This also brings Ganondorf down to 31.17%, below Squall. In other words, it's more likely that Sonic has gone up quite a bit than anything else. Either that, or Diablo SOMEHOW overperformed on Ganondorf.

My theory is that Diablo overperformed against Ganondorf. New characters with potential strength often overperform (sometimes by leaps and bounds) in their very first contest, and then disappoint (sometimes greatly) in their next. See also: Magus (a little bit), Frog, Revolver Ocelot. This does not apply to fodder that happen to make more than one contest.
