Squall is the favorite, but it's not like he's leaps and bounds ahead of Knuckles.
He's far enough ahead that he should never be in danger.

No it doesn't. They aren't joined at the hip. Kirby could've gained and Squall could've dropped for all we know.
While I personally believed that Squall is no longer on his 2k3 strength, I don't think he'll ever come in danger of losing tomorrow's match.
Kirby is an established avatar, so he shouldn't easily jump from year to year.
Squall won't be able to beat Kirby with 55% like he did last year, but again he'll never come in danger of actually losing the match.

Going by last year's XS, Squall beats 20XXDF Knux with 57.85% and
unadjusted Knux with 62.06% We've seen plenty of proof that Magus is
right around where Knux puts him at (20XXDF Knux, at least), and plenty
of proof that Squall is at least as high as the 2k3/2k4 stats have him
at. I really don't see how this match is in question.

Kirby? Beat Squall?
*sighs*
I would almost rather have Squall face Magus instead of Knuckles now. It's not as frustrating as having to deal with people selling Squall short when they have no business doing so.
He's not getting any credit. Yes, Squall supposedly "underperformed" last year against Kirby, but then the puffball validates it this year, and everyone's still going on the idea that he's overrated.

The stats haven't exactly proven to be accurate this year. Look at Vivi/Zelda. It was supposed to be a very close match and that Vivi was supposed to have a great chance at the upset. Instead, Zelda blew out Vivi and got almost 60% of the vote.

Simple explanation: There wasn't any SFF in Sephiroth/Vivi, as I and most other Vivi supporters assumed there was. The raw stats proved better than our interpretation of them; I can't see how you can possibly say that the stats didn't hold up in that match.

It's sad hearing people say "the stats are always wrong" as a reason
why Knuckles will win. They've predicted the wrong winner three times:
Magus/Knuckles (where we had evidence Magus was overrated),
Sora/Alucard (which was too close to call anyway), and Ocelot/Pac-Man
(where we haven't had a reading on Pac-Man in 3 years).

FFVIII isn't the most popular FF game on GameFAQs, and Knuckles is one
of the most popular Sonic characters among Sonic fans. He may, in fact,
be THE most popular.
And as for Link-Tanner, look at the number of people who visit Zelda boards compared to Driv3r. Also look at how Zelda:OoT has made the Top 50 FAQ list for the second longest time, second to FFVII. It's quite obvious who would win.

As an avid Knuckles fan, the only chance he has of beating Squall is if
Magus really was as strong as stats showed in 2k3...but seeing what
Knuckles, Tidus, and Fisher has done this year should make anybody
confident enough Magus wasn't that strong.

It doesn't have to be. It's still more popular than any Sonic game.

No, he's not. Sonic would not lose to Snake at all, much less 60/40.
Oh wait, I can't use previous years, can I? Well, Knuckles could beat Snake then. Yeah, there's nothing crazy about thinking that.

Snake went up, Zelda went up, Vivi went down, DK went up. Vivi still
wins if there's a rematch this year, but I think it's an awful lot
closer.
On second thought, maybe Master Chief actually went down, which draws Frog down, making Samus look slightly less impressive and gives Crono a good shot at her. Hm. We'll find out next round.

this happens in every match where the outcome isn't 100% certain. the
day before the match, everyone that's supporting the underdog starts
saying how they think their character is going to win, to the point
where it seems like they actually have a chance. then the match starts.
it happened with Vivi, with Zelda over Snake, with Auron, with Pac-Man
to a certain extent, with Ryu, and yesterday with Dante. I wouldn't
even bother arguing the point - the match is in a few hours anyway.

56% =/= crushing, and I really don't see why he can't get that much.
Heck, the stats have him getting almost 58%, so I'm being generous. I'd
have a hard time believing Knux could get 55% on Kirby (or even beat
him at all).

Leon:Squall::Chichiri:Vincent.
People tend to get rather animated when it comes to their favorite characters. Hell, I'd be right back in his face defending Knuckles if I actually had an argument. I open my mouth but nothing comes out. <_< There's really nothing that you can really argue for in Knuckles favor besides trying to bring up their performances on Snake in 2k2. You can try to use Magus all you want... You can only hope that the stats have a SEVERE case of nonlinearity with Snake always beating Knuckles.
The only thing I can do as a Knuckles fan is wait and see what happens when the match starts.

Btw, I have a serious questions to all fellow Samus supporters:
Could Samus be over-rated in 2k4?
Or in other words, did Cloud (yes, I'm blaming him, not Samus) choke against her in 2k4?
The reason I brought that up is because Cloud just came out of an SFF slugfest against the 2nd most popular FF VII char, Seph.
In that match, not only did he dashed the hopes of Seph fans to pieces, he added insult to injury by beating Seph much worse than he's supposed to.
Cloud vs. Samus took place only 3 days after Cloud vs. Seph, that's short enough timespan for Seph fans to still remember their grudges against him.
If enough people within the overall FF VII fanbase anti-voted Cloud, he would certainly choke against someone like Samus.
Btw, Samus actually led Cloud in the polls for a few hours, and Cloud even needed the morning vote to finally pull away.
That's totally unacceptable for a former champion, leading me to believe that some Seph fans actually waited for that match just to anti-vote him.

Squall Leonhart's Road to the Summer Contest 2005 Championship
Round 2: (3) Mag...Er...(6) Knuckles the Echidna
On this topic.
Yeah, I'm sure you'd be graceful when everyone's looking for every excuse in the book for selling your favorite character short when he, for all intents and purposes, is easily the statisical favorite.

If knuckles has increased, I can't see him being at 30% or over on bl,
which is what he would need to come come close to squall. I think it's
fairly obvious from kirby's match that squall is at least around where
the adjusted xstats put him. I mean, kirby couldn't have increased that much. Squall is just over 30% on bl at the very least.

who is everyone? everyone not arguing agrees with you, there's just no
point in arguing when the winner seems relatively obvious. there's not
even a reason to be having this discussion.
Knuckles surprised all of us once and people are hoping he does it again. that's all.

Heh, I find it hard to believe there are that many Sephiroth fans that
AREN'T Cloud fans at all... especially enough to anti-vote Cloud. Cloud
and Sephiroth fanbase AREN'T separate no matter WHAT you may think.
It's just that they are split down the middle in terms of who they
prefer.

Btw, Samus actually led Cloud in the polls for a few hours, and Cloud even needed the morning vote to finally pull away.
More like a few minutes, tops. Oh, and your theory doesn't hold water.

That's what I'm saying, but other people obviously don't feel that way.

The difference between Squall and Vincent is that Squall has some solid
data on him from previous years, while we only had Vincent's match with
Kerrigan to judge him.

I don't think Knuckles will win, though (my oracle prediction is Squall
with 50.45%, and that will not change). I'm just saying it will be a
nailbiter and that Knuckles does have a very realistic shot at Squall.

If it's realistic, show me some evidence, and don't even throw those
unadjusted stats at me. Nobody should take those at face value.
