Mario > Ness > Bowser is different, it's hero/villain. Tifa/Aeris are both side characters in FF7, and this topic couldn't agree on who was more popular until she came in and blasted Vyse. I'd expect a solid tripling out of Aeris as well.

Which I'll respect, and I'll even throw in that there's SFF to be considered too...but I still don't think that there will necessarily be a big difference between that example and the Tifa > Vyse > Aeris one.

It was never really in question with me that Tifa was more popular than Aeris. Seriously, anybody who really liked her character enough to vote for Aeris over a character like Solid Snake or the like is either a fool or a republican. Tifa is there the whole game, and is more than a pathetic "pure little flower girl Z-OMG" and a plot device.

Snake bombed against Mega Man 'cuz he sucked last year. Pretty simple, really...though I still don't know what to think about the ever-controversial Link/Mega Man match and the 20XXF-adjustment. I, sadly enough, only see Knuckles gettin' about 45% against Squall tomorrow, unless we completely under-estimated the 20XXF AND Knuckles made a nice gain from last year...neither of which I consider likely.

And I would likely have found it unfathomable back when I played the game that anyone would prefer Tifa over Barret or Red XIII, who I liked FAR more. Bottom line, we're basically just imposing our preconceptions on which character is stronger, and we don't have sufficient data to back either side up. Hell, IIRC one of the polls being floated around here had Vincent preferred to both Aeris and Tifa. Doesn't look like that's gonna pan out. =/

Tifa and Vincent are quite overrated, and so many people stating that she (Tifa) will beat sonic and/or mega man think that the FFVII factor is just that big...which Aeris proved that it certainly was not. People overrated Luigi's potential success two years back because of the Mario factor, and he flat-out DIED vs Squall. Likewise, I see not a single FFVII character getting into the Final Four.

Also, does anyone find it interesting that more people predicted three non-nobles to make Sweet Sixteen (Ganondorf, Bowser, and Master Chief) than Crono? Although the board's word is nver the final word in who wins a poll, I have a feeling that this lack of confidence/possible decline in power could clear the way for Mega Man to beat Crono in Final Four =)

If Auron was where he was in the 2004 stats (which don't adjust for Cloud and Sephiroth SFF), Sp2K5 Ganondorf would have broken 60% on him (He was stronger than Bowser then, and Ryu was stronger than Auron).

Based on what? 2k4 Auron was 80% as strong as Sp2k5 Ganon against Sephiroth. That indicates he should have gotten around 44-45% against Ganon. He got 46%, which is a tad stronger, again probably due to KH.

Yeah, Vincent was optional, but he also had that 'likeability' thing going for him. I expect Tifa has an advantage out of having more longevity than Aeris in the game, but Aeris makes up a lot of it with her greater prominence (and infamy, to an extent), while she also was featured in KH. Tifa may be higher, but to the extent people are talking up it just seems unreasonable to me.
