Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 223
From: Draco1214 | Posted: 8/29/2005 10:53:53 AM | Message Detail
The thing is, we've never seen Kerrigan in a contest setting, but we've seen Dante. If Vincent does break 60%, then I'll start to believe he'll be near elite. But for now, he still loses to Dante in my mind.

We've seen too many new characters suck for me to believe his strength.

Ganondorf has proven his strength. Saying otherwise is foolish. It's been two years since 2003.

Ask Sephiroth if Ganon's still weaker than Alucard was in 2k3.

You guys don't remember Mario/Crono 2 very well. It started 20 minutes early, and though Crono was winning after 24 hours, ending the match 20 minutes early would have been ridiculous. Mario was winning at 1 AM EST, and Ceej couldn't do much about it if he couldn't detect flagrant cheating.

The only fault I'll put on CJay at all in that match is that he shouldn't have started it that early, to avoid any such situation...

...then again though, maybe that's why it's such a great match eve today.

Heh...I remember Mario/Crono 2 ALL too well...Good to see Crono's come so far since then. However, if this potential SSB:M boost does help Mario (which personally I don't think will help the elite Ninty characters as much as the lower rung ones) then Mario might be able to give another MvC2 performance this year, should they meet in the finals.

From todays performance (currently, so it could change), based on Vercettis strongest and weakest performances in the stats, I get Crono to be from a range of 40.27% - 4.15% on '03 Link. So, unless Vercetti decreased, which could be possible, Crono could be closer to Samus than some like to think.

People have been asking why Nintendo has gotten such a boost. I have two theories.

One, there have been new releases for most of these characters over the past year, as well as the DS. The DS is right up there with Twilight Princess when it comes to dominating Nintendo-related news, and the system happens to kick ass. It's currently outselling the PSP worldwide at a 10:3 ratio.

Secondly, everyone seems to think that only Crono has been able to get constant increases due to new exposure from the contest. Remember how low the prediction percentages were for SSBM last spring? It's not out of the realm of possibility for those who felt like SSBM's run came from left field to go and play/love the game. It's relatively far-fetched, but look at what SSBM's characters have done since last year. They've all gone up or have impressed, and Master Hand won a match over a Final Fantasy villain.

True, I had thought for some reason Luigi was in 2k2. Doesn't matter though, even if you assume 4th seeded Kerrigan was as weak as 14th seeded Ratchet (HAH!), that still leaves Vincent slighty above Dante 2k4.

I have Dante in my bracket, but I think Vincent will win after seeing round one.

Anyway there's still one thing that makes me hope. Vincent did great against a poor character, and got all the FF7 fans support. Will he perform as well even against a more popular character?

I can't wait until Dante gets his face kicked in. It has little to do with the annoyance of the Dante supporters (though seeing their self-pwnings will be a nice bonus); I simply can't stand Dante or Devil May Cry, and love the hell out of Vincent and FF7. I'm out of the contest, so I'm just rooting for my favorites from here on in.

but look at what SSBM's characters have done since last year

It's not a great news, at least for me. SSBM is incredibly popular, especially on this site. The "SSBM factor" was one of the reason for which I choosed Ness over CJ in Round 1. Uh, and I was able to predict Master Hand over Kuja in the Villains, too.

I still say that both this Nintendo boost and the 2k3 Square boost were merely results of variations in the voter pool. With the amount of voters we've gained since last year... that seems very possible.

And the only other time a change like this occurred (although then, it was to a greater extent) was 2k3 with the Square guys, when we gained about 50,000 voters that weren't there from the beginning.

We've discussed the Solid Snake picture factor to death already. I personally don't think pictures make a difference of more than 2%. There may be overperformances when CT sprites are used, but God knows why.

To add to that, is there any reason why there are so many more voters? Does a good bracket make that much of a difference? And even then, we've only gotten (at a very rough estimate) an increase of ~5-15k in most matches, if that.

Well, in 2k3, there were obviously more voters because everyone remembered the first one and thus was excited to see another. Then in 2k4, participation dipped, partially because the contest was starting to be old news, partially because of the lack of good new characters, and partially because of the layout change.

This year... I wonder what drew so many people. All the new characters? Ceej's big advertisement banner at the top of the front page? The new setup with the ToC? I don't know. Probably a combination of those factors.
