Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 217

Speaking of squall, these results are making him look quite good at the moment.

I hope so. :)

45 minutes in and Kirby is already almost 600 votes ahead...

D-D-Dear god! At least I have Bowser winning the next round but still...considering future rounds I'm already now down 15 points. ><

Only chance now is that the finals come down to Samus vs. Crono, with Samus winning. Don't really care about winning; just want to breach the top 50 for once in a contest, bleh.

On a side note, I am beginning to wonder about something. Seems Nintendo characters, as a whole, have skyrocketed since last contest. Could this be somewhat due to the fact that Nintendo has been the only company to state that its next-gen machine will actually be focused on video games? Kutaragi has seemed insane the past year, with multiple quotes that have come out of his mouth now. If most gamers have felt betrayed by how Sony has been about the PS3, wonder if they have begun viewing the Revolution in a more positive light. If that did actually happen, could explain what has been going on this contest.

...

I'm just trying to grasp onto *something* now, dammit!

I don't think this makes Mega Man look bad. We've already seen enough unexpected things happen this year to take everything with a large grain of salt. Another Tidus decrease coupled with an all-around Nintendo increase, and Mega Man's performance last year looks fine.

this doesn't really make Mega Man look bad. Mega beat Tidus much worse than Kirby is here.

Domination of E3 for two consecutive years and the release of a successful system 10 short months ago. I think that qualifies as reason enough.

Yeah it does make Mega Man look bad. Mega Man adjusted compared to Kirby's performance puts Kirby jumping from 28 to 33.

think that's enough though? I mean, just a general nintendo increase out of nowhere? It's just strange, and we don't have a kingdom hearts to blame it on...

haha, I take that back, there was chain of memories...

While this may be true, keep in mind that FFVII has only had two matches to its credit. Nintendo has had over a dozen and it's impressed in nearly all of them.

we have SSBM to blame it on. you can say that it's been out for a few years, but the results clearly favour SSBM characters. hell, look no further than MH over Kuja.

SSBM has actually risen in the FAQs over the last few months. it used to be around 30, but lately it's hanging around #10 or so. a few weeks ago it was #3.

And yeah, SSBM is a force. Hell, I live in a town of nothing but hicks and stoners, and it's our town's certified party game. It's not Halo, it's not Half-Life 2, it's SSBM.

a game like SSBM only gains in popularity. multiplayer games like that are crazy.

and the site's focus on RPGs is shifting, and quick. as cn said, FF7 is the only other thing to impress.

I did keep that in mind, but when all is said and done I strongly suspect that Tifa and Vincent will be what people remember most from this contest.

Maybe SSBM is making a bigger boost now because of the next SSB? The online part of it might be making people practice more in order to get ready for it?

All I know that since SSBO has been announced, I have played SSBM more often...

you guys and your hype. here's the thought process you're expecting a voter to have:

"oh man, SSBO for the revolution! Kirby's gonna rule in that! <click>"

as opposed to:

"Kirby's DS game is the best thing on the system! <click>"

or:

"Kirby rules in SSBM! <click>

I'll take b or c over a anyday.

well, there basically aren't any Nintendo characters that aren't in SSBM. one problem I could see the SSB series having is that they basically have no new characters to add since Nintendo isn't making new games. who's left? Ridley? (who disappointed, by the way.)

This actually makes me wonder how the FFX vs. SSBM match would've gone with a different match picture, seeing how Tidus is one of the game's weaker characters.

SSBM Factor
Bracket support (I'd imagine)

Kirby does have all the reason in the world to go up on his own merits, though. Really, I think half of these matches where Nintendo has impressed so many of you are being taken for more than they are. You're impressed with the results because you want to be, not because they are actually doing anything impressive. I think Kirby is one of the few that should be of any note to any of you (along with Ness/CJ, Zelda/Vivi and Luigi/KOS-MOS) and that's only if you haven't been paying attention the last couple of months (where Kirby has been delivering the ownage).

"one problem I could see the SSB series having is that they basically have no new characters to add since Nintendo isn't making new games. who's left? "

Wario and Pitt come to mind immeadiately. Meta-Knight, Daisy, Toad, and many others also stick out if you think about it for some time. Really, there are dozens of characters that could find a home in the game even if we don't count Pokemon.
