Well, according to some, Yuna is more important to FFX than Tidus is...

and people still believe that Cloud is going to beat Link?
I don't care how Square in general is doing, Final Fantasy VII is something you simply cannot say has no chance at winning.

That's only true if you forget to adjust for Link/Samus SFF.
Link/Samus SFF shouldn't be too big, since they're quite close to each other, just like Link/Mario SFF.
And after seeing Magus' drop between 2k3 and 2k4, what's hard to swallow?
It doesn't matter how important a character is in the story, if that character isn't the protagonist. Protagonists are generally much stronger than the personalities would indicate. If importance in the story were all that counted, Colette would be here instead of Lloyd.
You forgot something, Kratos is much more popular than Llyod, despite not being the lead.
And Yuna's screen time in FF X isn't that much less than Tidus'.
And "leaps and bounds"? What exactly do you mean by that?
16 PS2 FINAL FANTASY X SQUARE ENIX INC (CORP) Dec-01 2,270,819
57 PS2 FINAL FANTASY X-2 SQUARE ENIX INC (CORP) Nov-03 1,379,019
They're less than a million copies apart, smaller than the difference between Halo and SSBM. I'd hardly call that "leaps an bounds". And for some reason you keep ignoring DMC2. Why is that?
It's almost a million difference, that's huge to me.
The main point is that FF X is the more popular and well-liked game, so Yuna would have gained most of her fans from FF X.
I don't care or know about DMC, so I can't comment.
Besides, you didn't mention how much did DMC 1 sold.

I don't see how someone could argue against FFX-2 giving Yuna a boost.
That just seemed rather obvious from the beginning. A leading role in a
game that sold over a million copies shouldn't be tossed aside.

"I don't care how Square in general is doing, Final Fantasy VII is something you simply cannot say has no chance at winning."
Maybe, but Cloud certainly isn't a lock to win, or even the favorite going into the match, unless something huge happened since 2004 that I'm not aware of. So Vincent did better then expected against a nobody. So what? If Link cant beat Cloud, then all the Twilight Princess hype was a complete dud.

Maybe, but Cloud certainly isn't a lock to win, or even the favorite
going into the match, unless something huge happened since 2004 that
I'm not aware of.
I certainly never said he was a lock to win or that he was even a "favorite' heading into the match. But that match certainly isn't clear in Link's favor nor can Cloud ever be counted out. Just changes over the course of a year can have Cloud winning that match this year, it wasn't as though Link by won by a ton last year.
So Vincent did better then expected against a nobody. So what?
Tifa also performed very well against someone we already know about. She's quite clearly in the elite level should Vyse had remained constant.
If Link cant beat Cloud, then all the Twilight Princess hype was a complete dud.
I have no idea why people were so behind Twilight Princess hype to begin with, especially this year. It always amazes me how people put so much stock behind something like that yet disregard Advent Children.

But Advent Children is just a movie! Never mind that people think that a short trailer supposedly gave Link a huge boost!
I don't think Twilight Princess as a game gave Link a boost from his 2k3 match against Cloud. I think it was more of a return to his adult form that everybody wanted. I actually think Link would have still won if TP wasn't there and they had plugged in SCII's version of Link.
I don't think AC would give Cloud much of a boost in this contest, especially so close to his match against Link. It isn't necessarily something that would bring more people to GameFAQs like a new game would. Also, you would have to assume that everyone is going to rush and watch the movie immediately. Advent Children will probably give Cloud a boost eventually, but only after more and more people eventually watch the movie.

I'm still pretty sure it was ZCE. It went out with 2.5-3 million GameCubes, to people who weren't necessarily Zelda fans. Compare that to OoT selling 3.5 million copies, or Wind Waker selling 1.9 million (probably less as of last contest). ZCE was huge, which most people don't seem to realize.

Aeris and Sora are even closer, but their match had pretty extreme SFF.
That's something I can't explain, but later years suggested that neither Mario nor Samus was SFF'ed that badly.
Yeah, so? Kratos would be even stronger if he were the protagonist. I'm not understanding your point here.
You don't need to be the lead to be popular, Kratos proved it.
Would he be more popular had he been the lead, who knows...
A game that sold over a million copies still isn't nothing. That's more than FFVI sold. Halo 2 is more popular and well-liked than Halo, but MC still gains most of his popularity from the first game. Probably because his roles in both games are exactly the same, unlike Yuna.
But most of those who bought FF X-2, did so because they've played FF X, so their opinion about Yuna shouldn't change by much, regardless of her new-found role.
It's not like FF X-2 exposed Yuna to a mostly brand new audience.

Well, people don't seem to argue that Mario Sunshine being released
on the day of his match with Cloud helped him. It's not like everyone
bought it on the same day.
Hype is at its greatest in the immediate aftermath of a release.
With Mario Sunshine, we're not talking about hype, we're talking about people coming online to check out the FAQs. Popular games like that are always front loaded. I don't think Halo 2's sales since release have matched its first day sales yet.

But most of those who bought FF X-2, did so because they've played
FF X, so their opinion about Yuna shouldn't change by much, regardless
of her new-found role.
sounds like you're arguing that KHF doesn't exist to me.

It's not like FF X-2 exposed Yuna to a mostly brand new audience.
Yeah, just like DMC2. Yuna was a completely different person in X-2, and also the protagonist. Being the protagonist helps, that's part of the reason that the protagonist is almost always the first character from a game to get in, and usually the most popular.

Nah, that's not what he's arguing at all. KHF says that a bunch of non-FF fans bought KH, and all of them saw the wonder of Squall, Cloud, and Sephiroth, and then voted for them in the contest. He's saying that everyone who bought FFX-2 already knew the wonder of Yuna, so they'd be voting for her anyway.

Ocarina of Time only sold 3.5 million copies???
In America, yes.

To the man whose spirit was so free it was bothersome... Kurosaki Ichigo, my sword has been broken by your freedom of spirit.

not in regards to Squall, though - most people seem to say that they
like Squall more after having played KH. I only played about 13 minutes
of it, so I have no idea.
there are people who played x-2 before x; partystar, for example.

Yeah, I know it's not as big as I used to think. 4% is much more reasonable than 7%, eh?
Even 4% is still extremely ridiculous, and you were expecting 7%?
I'd give her a 2% boost at most, and even that is still too much.

KH exposed Cloud cs. to a somewhat new audience, especially to those who bought the game for the Disney chars.
And KH was released long after FF VII, it could've acted as a reminder to former/non-hardcore FF VII fans why they used to like Cloud cs.
