Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 212
From: Sir Crono | Posted: 8/23/2005 1:13:10 AM | Message Detail
What do you mean at this rate it will be close by mourning? Dorf is gaining 240 votes every hour.

For about the last 30 minutes, he's gaining 10-20 votes per hour and seemingly getting lower every time. It won't be long before Auron comes very close to winning an update or actually does.

Yuna's % went up during the day, which means either she started getting slightly more votes than she was per update, Ganondorf was getting slightly fewer votes, or a combination of the two.

If it was 50/50, and Yunauron (since I forgot which we were discussing >_>) started gaining more votes and Ganon started gaining fewer than he was, then Ganon would fall behind.

Even if you assume that it was 50-50 then, Ganon still gets more votes. I'm sorry, but I really don't understand what you mean.

If you're assuming the match was 50/50 at one point, Ganon obviously wouldn't be making such large gains. Assuming the match was 50/50, at the point Yuna's percentage began to increase significantly, her percentage in a 50/50 match would as well, meaning she would be drawing in a larger intake of the votes than she was before. It really has nothing to do with the lead at all. None whatsoever.

I want anyone to show me how Yuna would've won if it was 50-50 at ANY point in this. Please, go ahead.

The assumption is that we have a stronger Yuna, who has the same trends she does. She starts at 50%, ten minutes into the poll. She gains 8% over the next 4.5 hours, then loses 3% over the next 8 hours, gaining 1% of that back by the end, concluding the poll with 59%.

actually, I wonder: when does everyone consider to be "the day vote" and "the night vote"? I always assumed it was when people woke up (say, 10am EST) to evening (say, 7pm EST), and after that is the night vote.

A part of me fears asking this, but why is Auron expected to be stronger with the day vote?

He won't be strong enough with it for it to matter, but looking at Ganon's match against Yuna, Yuna gained a slightly higher percentage of the vote during the day than he did during the night vote (hope you guys that don't understand what we mean by winning the day vote catch note of that). It would only be natural to assume that Auron would follow suit, especially seeing him nab a slightly higher percentage of the vote during the day than he did during the night against Big Boss.

Ah...I think I get it. I was talking about a totally different concept; I was thinking that although we were assuming that Ganon - Yuna was at 50-50, we were keeping Ganon's rates of gaining the votes the same as if he weren't.

I'm sorry about that. ^_^;

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it goes something like this:

FIRST VOTE!!1 - 4:00 AM PST = First night vote
4:00 AM - 8:00 AM = Morning vote
8:00 AM - 6:00 PM = Day vote
6:00 PM - Mass refreshing for first vote = Second night vote

Meh, Ganon didn't take in an unusual number of votes. Just a suck update for Auron that period.
From: Sir Crono | Posted: 8/23/2005 1:25:11 AM | Message Detail
It seems Tidus did better with the morning and the second night vote, while Ganondorf did better with the day vote. Regardless, at this point, Tidus had a higher percentage than Auron does, but he was actually behind by nearly 500 right now.

Not at all. At a time like this, when we're only getting ~300 votes per update, it doesn't take much to cause a minor swing like that.

it looks like Ganon hit his lowest point on Tidus at 08:15 (actually 06:15, I guess?), which matches up to Ganon/Yuna. if those voting trends hold, Auron needs a lead before 6am or so PST.

In other words, their matches are looking awfully similar for the first hour and a half. Only the lower vote totals make the percentage look bigger.

Well, as long as Ganon keeps minimally gaining on the lead, I'm happy. I don't see any huge vote swings for any Nintendo/Square matchups since both have characters that are relatively popular in all regions.

Pretty much. Then around 3:04 or so it started up again, but it wasn't instant updates, and it froze there until 3:05 where it normally would. Both of these freezes were Ganon with ~65%.
