http://sc2k5.com/drupal/node/11
Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

well, in all honesty, i picked Auron over Ganondorf because i
wholeheartedly believe him to be stronger than Tidus and i also think
his ranking has been lower than it should be due to being SFF'd by
Cloud and Sephiroth - Final Fantasy's two biggest characters. here's
hoping that Auron proves he's the third strongest FF character
tomorrow. (which could turn into 4th or 5th after Vincent and Tifa are
done, but whatever.)

If I had a PS2, I'd get FFX for sure; Auron's quote there is enough to
get me hyped to play it...though I probably won't ever get around to
givin' the game a fair chance.

Well it's pretty much the RPG of this
generation, and it doesn't look like it has any chance of losing that
title, so it would definitely be worth playing at some point.

Well, there's KHII, but Auron's in that one, too.
Seriously, with Cloud, Squall, and Auron, you can't go wrong. Now if only one of them would kill Sora and take over the leading role, preferably Squall.

I highly doubt KHII could take FFX's title away from it. If nothing
else, KHII could be hurt somewhat by being released at the end of the
generation, FFIX style.
Although KHI is probably the second most popular RPG this generation, so if KHII is better, I guess it would knock KHI down a notch.

KH is more popular than FFX is. FFX sucks though, nobody should play it. It has the worst cast of any RPG ever, and the battle system's a big downgrade from ATB. It's also far shorter than the last few FFs, it took me less than half the time it took me to beat FFVI-FFIX.
Even Auron's not great. He was far lamer than the hype would have me believe, and he's certainly not nearly as cool as the walking heap of awesomeness known as Ganon. My prediction is a 57-43 win for Ganon, but I'll still be pulling for him to break 60%.

Although I disagree with all of this, I wasn't talking about personal preference. FFX is the first thing anyone should think of when someone thinks of the most popular RPG this gen. Look at sales, contest results for both it and it's cast, the fact that FFX is still in the top 10 PS1 FAQs and Message Boards, whatever you need to. And KH is definitely less popular then FFX. KH may be talked about now, but it's all because of KH2, you know, the only game who has the kind of hype to rival TP (on GameFAQs at least).

KH has sold better than FFX, 2.38M to 2.27M as of May. FFX's been out longer than KH, so that margin should widen as time passes. As for popularity...I concede that FFX is more popular on GameFAQs, but look at what KH did for Cloud, Squall, and Sephiroth. That's a huge difference.

On a worldwide scale, Final Fantasy X is among one of the highest
selling Final Fantasy games to date -- easily beating out Kingdom
Hearts while we're at it.

And just for interest's sake, Tidus 2k2 was at 33.8% on Link. When did he decrease?
Damn you for askin'; I was just now about to bring that issue up. Apparently, even if you adjust for WDF, I think Tidus dropped in 2k3 when everybody else Square-based gained.

Yeah, but we live in America. Who cares about the rest of the world?

I tend not to think of "just America" when talking about videogames sales not relating to the contest. While America is the biggest marketplace for games, it isn't where everything happens.

Apparently, even if you adjust for WDF, I think Tidus dropped in 2k3 when everybody else Square-based gained.
So, WDF'd down to...30%? That'd make sense, and then he could perhaps stay constant from 2k2 to 2k3, and take a small drop from 2k3 to 2k4. Assuming Magus to be 31% in 2k3, have him drop 2% from 2k3 to 2k5, and he ends up at 29%. I can see Knuckles increasing 2% for the win.

I just spent a while attempting to find sales figures to prove you
wrong, but I never realized they were so difficult to find. But I would
definitely trust anything HM says on such numbers anyway.

while gamefaqs obviously has a large American population, it's far from 100% American.
I know this is obvious, but people seem to think there's only Americans here. Koreans only visit gamefaqs when starcraft is in the contest, after all!

If you want me to copy and paste it from the list...
13 PS2 KINGDOM HEARTS SQUARE ENIX INC (CORP) Sep-02 2,376,635
14 GBA POKEMON RUBY NINTENDO OF AMERICA Mar-03 2,358,883
15 PS2 MEDAL HONOR FRONTLINE ELECTRONIC ARTS May-02 2,291,959
16 PS2 FINAL FANTASY X SQUARE ENIX INC (CORP) Dec-01 2,270,819
The NPD released a list of the games selling over 500K as of May 2k5. Interestingly, DMC2 was not on the list.
while gamefaqs obviously has a large American population, it's far from 100% American.
Of course it's not 100% American, I'm not even American. But America's still pretty much the only country that matters. Even the Xbox's American numbers are far from good, they're far from the N64's.

I'll paste some more important numbers:
11 Final Fantasy X 36.86%
13 Kingdom Hearts 34.70%
with KH likely being inflated thanks to the entity known as Starcraft.
