Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 208
From: yoblazer33 | Posted: 8/19/2005 9:33:03 AM | Message Detail
And when Bowser and Ganon proceed to rip through their opponents, these people are all going to turn around and act like there were hidden signs all over the stats that made it clear from the beginning.

The prospect of Stats Topic regs outfitted in a brown trench coats, top hats, magnifying glasses, and hand crafted pipes searching for "hidden signs" amuses me tremendously.

Well, believe it or not, this actually makes me feel a lot better for Snake (though I'm still unsure how Ocelot was able to do so well on Bowser). This seems to be a case of Pac-Man being underrated by the stats than the other way around, as well as the factor that Big Boss and Ocelot simply aren't going to get votes from the MGS3 crowd without having the names and pictures from the game that make them recognizable.

Actually, just scratch that. I just plain don't see the X-Stats being a good indicator of a lot of the next matches. I wouldn't be surprised if Snake pulled 60% on Zelda next round.

The only bad thing about Pac-Man winning is that Yoshi is going to pull of a Luigi.

Unless it's a Luigi only thing

Ocelot was obviously overrated, because he's based on a Bowser on roids.

Seriously, it's a mix of both. I'm somewhat surprised, but not overly so.

As a lifelong gamer, and avid fan of the old classics...it is extremely satisfying to see Pac Man getting the job done against a fanboy driven nobody like Ocelot.

In a few years..who will talk about Ocelot? Nobody but the diehard Metal Gearians...but the Pac will live forever.

Look for my Round 1 Summary column tonight, since my loyal fans want it! :)

Now Bowser was on 'roids in the Spring Contest? Even though that was the first time he was able to get an extended amount of matches under his belt? Because he did better than expected on Sephiroth? Because EVERY result that happened 2 years ago in 2k3 were perfect and everything that happens from then that contradict those results is obviously a fluke?

wow, nice lead. can't say it's unexpected after last night, though.

I said a couple days ago that 2 would pick Ocelot and 2 Pac-Man. I think Pac-Man will be the bracket favourite, too, though only by a couple percent. argh, I should have stuck with Pac-Man in my bracket; oh well, that thing's shot to hell anyway.

Pac is running away now, this match was over before it even started.

I realized that Luigi got old-school SFF Pac-Man last year, but I figured Ocelot would still be stronger. Then the closer this match came, the closer I saw the match being. Then last night, I finally realized that Pac was going to take this.

Well...Master Hand'D.

I think people noticed how Revolver handled himself well in the Villain Contest (look no further than the prediction percentages for Ganon, Bowser, Kefka, and Diablo). I doubt Pac-Man's cause is helped by him not winning a match since 2k2 (and he beat two characters who haven't been seen since), including the Game Contest. It also doesn't hurt that Revolver's a two-seed, and you have my case for Revolver being the bracket-favorite. I figure Pac-Man's takin' 43%-45% (closer to 43%) of the bracket support.

It won't be a mad run. MGS does okay in the night, IIRC, but Ocelot was gaining *very* slowly at the beginning of the poll (first night vote). I can't see him making up the vote differential at that pace.

No, it really doesn't. The night vote favored Ocelot, but the board vote didn't--so it actually hurt him more than it helped him. So, all things being equal, a second night vote (assuming it would be equal to the first, which it in all certainty isn't) would be more beneficial than the first, which was the opposite of the point that you were illustrating.
