I'm thinking the VFL was established because Vyse has been a measure of strength for characters around him for as long as I can remember.

Hmm, perhaps Ocelot being lower than Pac-man (If he loses) mean Bowser really didn't gain at all.

For the record, getting 66% on 2003 Pac-Man would put Bowser at 32.82%, .05% above Ryu's 2004 value and about 2% lower than what the Spring Contest has him. Granted, the picture could be making up the difference, but still, it's interesting to see.

Well, that makes me feel slightly better, but the only way I'd feel better about Bowser > Ryu now is to see it myself.

And with the muncher's victory, a small step has been taken towards restoring my faith in humanity.

From: Zaphod H | Posted: 8/19/2005 7:20:09 AM | Message Detail
So looking at the All-time xsts, I see Ocelot is above Pac-Man by about 3 pts.

I'm not sure if I did it correctly, but I calculated that if the stats were correct, Ocelot should beat Pac-Man something around 55-45.

So yet another match where the stats (at least so far) got incorrect?

Heh, maybe I should have taken a look at those before making my Oracle pick. And yes, the stats are technically wrong, but there's an explanation for it: Luigi overperformed on Pac-Man last year.

Do these take into account being SFFed by Luigi and Kefka being SFFed by Crono, though?

And Pac-man was behind SFF in 2003, which I didn't take in account until KOS-MOS's match. I would of tooken Pac-man for the upset, seriously.

This is going to hurt me more than you

Bowser was against a new character
Yoshi was against a very low fodder and when you're that low things change.
As for Luigi *points to Pac-Man in 2k3*
And for Pac-Man we don't know to much about the x-st from the spring contest.

There I've bashed four of my favorite characters.

I'll give Luigi enough credit to think he can give Tifa quite a respectable match, which is a lot farther than some people are willing to go. However, it's just to easy to logically assume he overperformed on Pac-Man. Who does Pac-Man have besides the old school elite and the casual voting for him? No one, I say, and it's pretty difficult to not picture Luigi taking a chunk of his casual support.

Err...not sure if Slow's post was directed at me, but I'll just explain how I calculated it anyway (so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, heh)

Went to MMX's site and looked at the "All Time Xsts" list.

Ocelot has 23.38, Pac-Man 19.64 (let this number be x)

I take the inverse of (100 - x) / x, interpreting it as these two character's popularity on a scale of 0-1 with 1 being Link, or whomever those stats are used as a base with.

Taking the ratio of Ocelot's to Pac-Man's "popularity index", that comes to a relative popularity advantage of about 1.25 in favour of Ocelot.

So in terms of a head to head, I take it that Ocelot's percentage of votes / Pac-Man's percentage of votes should be 1.25.

So solving for y / (100 - y) = 1.25 yields 55.56% for Ocelot.

I get 58.00% using the proper method. That's wrong.

I don't think these all-time stats adjust for Bowser/Sephiroth, Crono/Kefka and Luigi/Pac-Man though.

Pretty much unless something weird happens during the middle of the day. Ocelot didn't build much of a lead during the starting hours of the poll (a 200+ lead in 3 hours is not impressive in the least). It's doubtful he can overtake Pacman with the night vote.
From: Phediuk | Posted: 8/19/2005 7:43:23 AM | Message Detail
The vote totals are absolutely awful today, BTW. This certainly doesn't bode well for Pac-Man (...or Ocelot) next round.

I can't help but wonder what this would be like if it were Liquid instead of Ocelot. I know Liquid ranked below Ocelot in the spring, but there is no way Pac-Man could almost upset Frog. And then there's Yoshi vs Liquid to deal with, too . . .

Pac-Man never really brought in the votes take a look at his other matches for proof. It's probably because if you've never knew about Ocelot you'll either vote for Pac-Man or just don't plain vote.

Hah. For Luigi to "SFF" Pac-Man to the point where Pac can still beat Ocelot, despite not being in the same game or even from the same company, is absurd. Pac-Man going through Spring Ocelot would be expected to get 49.17% on 2k4 Luigi. Instead, he got "SFF'd" down to 32.27%. That's far worse than the only other proven case of SFF between two close characters (Sora should have gotten 45.14% on Aeris, but only got 33.34%), and that number will rise until Pac-Man becomes indirectly stronger than 2k4 Luigi as Pac-Man rises throughout the day. Completely ridiculous.

As for KOS-MOS, getting 34% on 2k4 Luigi puts her at 16.74%, a 7.50% drop, one of the largest in contest history, and means she would now lose to Crash with 44.43% as opposed to beating him with 62%. Forgive me if I'm skeptical. The best part is that the people who think this are the same people that refuse to think that Vyse dropped at all.

Crono/Kefka is adjusted using 20XXDF Kefka, and there's no reason to change the other two.
