Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 207
From: LeonhartForever | Posted: 8/17/2005 9:03:40 PM | Message Detail
Knuckles just beat Magus, who beat Ganondorf in 2003. Ganondorf beat Alucard in 2004, and Alucard is slightly weaker than Squall. Another victory for the echidna is quite possible here.

Of course, using this method, Knuckles is Sonic's equal and stronger than the guy who beats him 60/40 every year.

Sound the alarm.

#3: Bowser Koopa vs. Ryu
Winner of this match takes the division. Both men got less impressive victories in round 1, both barely breaking 55% on their opponents. I got Bowser taking this one, but I'd love to be wrong here.

It's kinda weird how people want to use Magus/Ganondorf 2003 as proof that Knuckles could beat Squall, and yet Ganon and Knux share a common opponent. It's pretty obvious which one did far better.

Summer 2005 Contest - 27/30 points
Current Match Prediction: Yoshi vs. Laharl
From: Who Cares? | Posted: 8/17/2005 9:12:53 PM | Message Detail
There are too many good matches in the 2nd round that deserve great pics (Auron/Ganon, Bowser/Ryu, etc.).

I dunno, I think Bowser/Ryu would look very good if Ceej doesn't royally screw up the pic selection. I'm expecting Ryu to get his Third Strike portrait. Maybe Bowser gets the pic he had against Ocelot.

As in, Bowser getting the picture he gets 99% of the time? He probably will, unfortunately. We should get Paper Mario Bowser.

I agree with that list for the most part, the big difference is I'd swap Kirby/Tidus with Knuckles/Squall. I really have a bad feeling I've kissed my two points goodbye by picking Tidus.

And no, I don't think Bowser looked better coming out of round 1 than Ryu did. Rikku >> Chun Li, I think. Ryu's still got my full confidence.

Lopen: I never outright praised Ninja Gaiden. I just said it's hard as hell, but now that I'm almost done the game I realize it's due to piss poor design. Respawning enemies, questionable collision detection and not being able to jump backwards very well are absolutely horrible.

And my Mario 64 came in the mail! <3

hm... my most anticipated second round matches:

1. Knuckles/Squall, just because I want to see what the hell happened to Magus.

2. Dante/Vincent, because I'm not yet buying into the Vincent hype.

3. Snake/Zelda, because, despite everyone saying Snake isn't "noble nine", he's yet to lose to someone. Zelda is his first test.

4. Kirby/Tidus, because I think Kirby is the favourite.

5. Ganon/Auron, for obvious reasons.

6. Bowser/Ryu, also for obvious reasons.

7. Zero/Lloyd, to find out how strong Lloyd / TOS actually is. also, it should give us a good clue as to who's stronger between Lloyd and Kratos.

8. Tifa/Luigi, because this will give us a much better clue on how strong Tifa is.

9. MC/DK, because I can actually see DK winning.

10. Alucard/Sora, because while this match is supposed to be close, I don't really care who wins.

11. Samus/Frog, to figure out if Frog can go 55/45 with Samus or 70/30. either one is a possibility.

12. Mega Man/Leon, because it'll be interesting to see how Leon does.

13. Mario/Ness, just because I'm curious as to how Ness will end up.

14. Yoshi/Ocelot, blah.

15. Sonic/Diablo, blah.

16. Crono/TV, superblah.

You know, DK could theoretically beat Master Chief, in what would probably be the funniest upset ever. It's rather unlikely (I think it will be more like 55/45 in MC's favor), but still possible.

All this talk of Tifa being so strong.... I don't think so.

IMO, the reason Tifa won by such a large margin is the fact that nobody except the crazed GC fanboys care about Vyse anymore. His time has come and gone, and this will be his last contest.

Besides, at least he still got 20% on FFVII. ^_^

Well, Ulti, I know you didn't extensively praise it, but I can't shake... "This game is hard as hell! <3". I may have just inserted the <3... heh.

Actually, I kinda hate the respawning enemies too. When you're jumping to a ledge and a damn bird will be there, you don't jump, let the bird come to you, and double back a bit to kill it. As you approach the ledge a second time, well, there's our fine feathered friend again! I'd actually just fool the spawn by doubling back ever so slightly to remove the bird from the screen then proceeding.

I guess using that as an actual tactic proves that the game is flawed. Not that I care, it's still one of my favorite NES games, even if it is a bit frustrating at times. (often for the wrong reasons, but that's what NES games are MADE of, man)

I also agree about the not being able to jump backwards, but that was clearly intended for some reason or another...

From: UltimaterializerX | Posted: 8/17/2005 9:42:52 PM | Message Detail
It's utterly ridiculous. If they were going for some form of realism in that particular physic while including enemies magically reappearing out of thin air after moving backwards one millimeter and Ryu being able to literally cling to walls, then they're idiots.

So DK = CATS?

It's very difficult to calculate CATS's strength through the matches he is in. CATS has an extremely loyal fanbase, who will vote for him in spite of anything, maybe more than 12% of the vote.

Also, you need to take into consideration the fact that Master Chief also has an extremely loyal anti-fanbase. He probably gets more anti-votes than Cloud does. If you combine these two speculative factors, it's not hard to see why CATS performed so well against the Chief.

I'm not saying DK will do as badly as CATS, but he won't do much better.

The Anti Master Chief fanbase inflates CATS % more than it'll inflate DK's % though, don't forget that.

And now that I think about it, the odd backwards jumping may have been to help thwart climbing up a single wall with your wall sticking. (although it failed) Or something to do with the wall sticking.. single wall climbing wouldn't have been the same otherwise.

Raiden fact of the post: Single wall climbing? Raiden prefers to just climb it rather than hop out and back repeatedly...
From: RPGuy96 | Posted: 8/17/2005 9:53:10 PM | Message Detail
It's very difficult to calculate CATS's strength through the matches he is in.

Eggplant CATS is the most consistent character ever (without including the WDF), and Face CATS from the Spring predicts 2k3 MC/Face CATS within, like, a quarter of a percent. I can't see how you can possibly say that.

CATS has an extremely loyal fanbase, who will vote for him in spite of anything, maybe more than 12% of the vote.

Didn't we discard that theory when CATS nearly beat Ansem? CATS is character like any other. There's nothing special about him other than the fact that Face CATS > Eggplant CATS.

Also, you need to take into consideration the fact that Master Chief also has an extremely loyal anti-fanbase.

Yeah, that helped Crash out a whole lot. And if they don't make a difference against fodder, they they won't make a difference against an established character, because I'll bet most people that would antivote MC would vote for DK anyway.

I'm not saying DK will do as badly as CATS, but he won't do much better.

And I'm saying that's absurd.

It's difficult for me to fathom Master Chief failing to break 60% on Donkey Kong.

I'm betting he gets 60% at the least.

Didn't we discard that theory when CATS nearly beat Ansem? CATS is character like any other. There's nothing special about him other than the fact that Face CATS > Eggplant CATS.

That was a completely different situation. It was basically a battle between two unpopular characters. But what I was trying to say is that, no matter who he faces, CATS has an extremely loyal core fanbase, and that is what contributed to his high score on MC.

I'm betting he gets 60% at the least.

DK can easily break 40%, as CATS broke 30%

That was a completely different situation. It was basically a battle between two unpopular characters. But what I was trying to say is that, no matter who he faces, CATS has an extremely loyal core fanbase, and that is what contributed to his high score on MC.

That's not a different situation, CATS is ranked higher than his 2004 level using the Spring stats, simply because he had a face picture. It was more recognizable. CATS having a loyal fanbase doesn't make him stronger than DK, CATS may have a loyal fanbase, but it's only big when he has a face pic.

After doing some research, I realized I had miscalculated DK's strength(which is probably why I chose that lousey Sam Fisher upset >_<).

But still, DK isn't getting any stronger. It might be against the statistics, but I'm predicting Master Chief winning 60-40. Besides, Knuckles > Magus defied the stats, no?
