GFNW at its finest. The board fully expects him to lose, yet everyone votes for him anyway.

Or Leon isn't on par with Jill like many thought he would be, but screw common sense in analysing a Gordon match. Gotta love the little guy.

Simple Explanation of Extrapolated Standings:
A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

From: Lopen | Posted: 8/17/2005 8:27:10 PM | Message Detail
So yeah, HaRRicH, I think you're hugely underestimating the popularity of wrestling here. To put things in perspective, I'd put pretty much any wrestler that regularly appears and seems to have any sort of fanbase on Raw/Smackdown over Laharl.

The bigger guys like Kurt Angle I'd probably put at around Luigi level, just because it's so fun to do that.

Hulk Hogan? I could see him being Noble Nine material. No joke.

Hey, anyone know of a poll of the day... "got wrestling?" or some crap like that? I'm looking at you, TRE. Heh.

Analysis

Out of all of the characters that returned from last year, Laharl was the one that shouldn’t have made reappearance. Not only was did he lost to a fodder 60/40; he came back as a 6 seed. Well at least my second favorite character is going to have a blowout. Yoshi should have no problem destroying Laharl tomorrow and hopefully we’ll never see his face in this contest ever again.

Laharl may have not been in any new games this year, but Yoshi’s most notable game last year was Super Mario 64 DS. He was a playable character on that game, but I don’t think it will give him much of a boost other than a couple of points and that might be a stretch. We also don’t know much about Yoshi’s strength since he was SFF on both years (yes I believe there was some kind of SFF against Bowser), but at least this year he’s going to lose to a Non-Nintendo character (most likely Mega Man).

Now if we take a look at Vyse and Luigi’s matches we can see that they didn’t really perform to expectations. While most agree that Vyse underperformed against Tifa (Tifa is not taking the contest dam it), but there’s been some talk about Luigi’s performance. Like he did to Pac-Man I’m pretty sure that Luigi only did so well because of his name and will probably fold against any character with some kind of strength. Then again there could’ve been some kind of SFF in Link/Samus and Yoshi/Luigi, but like Yoshi/Bowser it’s probably not going to be worth so much. Also if we adjusted Tifa to equal Sonic that will put Vyse at Laharl’s number, while many people are having a hard time believing Vyse = Laharl I’m having a harder time believing Sonic = Tifa and besides fodder vs. fodder matches never really tell too much.

I may be acting a little bias here, but I think Yoshi has a good chance on quadrupling Laharl tomorrow, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he couldn’t manage a tripling though. This would’ve been better if we switched Laharl with Knuckles or Alucard so we can make this match interesting. Here’s to Yoshi, hopefully he can make it to the Sweet 16 with ease.

charmander6000’s Bracket: Yoshi over Laharl

charmander6000’s Prediction: Yoshi wins, 78.47% - 21.53%

From: HaRRicH | Posted: 8/17/2005 8:35:44 PM | Message Detail
Just as a quick observation, notice that Mario and Lloyd have the slight overlap advantage with the face-shots. I'm not saying this will affect any matches with over-laps like that, but it's worth noting that the higher seeds in the first two pics get that lil' bit of over-lap...if there's a pic with a significant over-lap though, especially in a match like Kirby/Tidus, that might have an effect.

From: Lopen | Posted: 8/17/2005 8:42:49 PM | Message Detail
Yeah, that's a pretty decent poll strength. The "no, but I used to category", I'd wager 90% of it would know of HBK and Bret Hart and those "old school" big names, and about 75% would know of The Rock, Austin, Triple H... some of the relatively newer guys. That was when wrestling was really big. So yeah, when over half of the GameFAQs population knows of the big names, I think that pretty much every well known wrestler would beat Jak comfortably at least.

Hogan would be known by even part of that 38% or whatever it was that has never watched it. He'd be quite a force. Now, the question is, who would get more anti-votes? Some wrestler or Master Chief? My money's actually on the wrestler at this point.

And uh... something not wrestling? How about "I don't think the overlap will do jack"... heh.

You probably want me to drop the wrestling topic right about now, eh?

Actually, am I the only one seeing a pic advantage for Mario if he and Samus both get their 8-bit sprites during their match (SMB1 v. Metroid 1)? I know it'll probably be their SMB3/SMW v. Super Metroid sprites if it comes down to it, but still.

That is, if by some crazy stroke of fate the sprite round wouldn't be the third round, but work with me here people.

I don't like the super close-up pics at all. Ceej could have picked any other theme, why this one? Did he get lazy all of a sudden? Half of these pics are going to look ugly as hell. There are too many good matches in the 2nd round that deserve great pics (Auron/Ganon, Bowser/Ryu, etc.).

I'm not looking forward to seeing Ganon and Auron's big mugs filling up the pic. It's not like those two are the most photogenic characters.

Here's how I rank the second round matches from most anticipated to not-so-exciting...

#1: Dante Sparda vs. Vincent Valentine
It's down to one of two questions: Is Vincent for real, or is Kerrigan simply fodder? Knowing that Dante's had weak performances against powerful characters (such as not breaking 40% on Crono in 2002), this could be the third time in four years the son of Sparda makes a second round exit.

#2: Knuckles the Echidna vs. Squall Leonhart
The only past stats I looked up for this was both of their performances against Solid Snake. Suprisingly, Knuckles did better, but that was 3 years ago when both characters faced him. If that doesn't convince you, consider this. Knuckles just beat Magus, who beat Ganondorf in 2003. Ganondorf beat Alucard in 2004, and Alucard is slightly weaker than Squall. Another victory for the echidna is quite possible here.

#3: Bowser Koopa vs. Ryu
Winner of this match takes the division. Both men got less impressive victories in round 1, both barely breaking 55% on their opponents. I got Bowser taking this one, but I'd love to be wrong here.

#4: Alucard Tepes vs. Sora
Is Alucard still as tough as ever, or will he become 0-3 against Square characters? Sora hasn't made much of a mark either. Victories over HK-47, Ryu Hayabusa, and Agent 47 aren't saying much.

#5: Ganondorf Dragmire vs. Auron
Is Auron stronger than Tidus? Will Zelda's delay affect Ganon's performance? Only time will tell.

#6: Solid Snake vs. Princess Zelda
I think Snake's got this one, but the question is, how much will Zelda get on him?

#7: Kirby vs. Tidus
Does the little pink guy have what it takes to defy the odds? Tidus came close to beating Ganondorf, who took down Alucard with ease, who took down Kirby in 2003. If Kirby's going to win, he's got a huge mountain to climb.

#8: Master Chief vs. Donkey Kong
It won't be as close as Frog/Chief was, but it'll be interesting to see how much the King of Swing can get on Master Chief.

#9: Samus Aran vs. Frog
This will be the first blowout that Frog endures in any contest, the question is, how much?

#10: Mega Man vs. Leon Kennedy
Mega Man's far from his 2002 performance, and even though he'll beat Leon with ease, it'll be interesting to see what Leon can do in round 2.

#11: Yoshi vs. Revolver Ocelot/Pacman winner
I think it'll be Yoshi/Ocelot, and after seeing both their performances against Bowser, I think Yoshi's got it in the bag.

#12: Tifa Lockheart vs. Luigi
Luigi failed to break 40% on Squall, I doubt he'll do any better against a woman who nearly equaled Cloud's performance against Vyse.

#13: Zero vs. Lloyd Irving
A man who got 48% on Sonic vs. a man who didn't break 55% on Wesker. Lloyd's bending over and kissing his ass goodbye.

#14: Sonic the Hedgehog vs. Diablo
Diablo only got around 35% on Ganondorf last Spring, and I know Sonic's stronger than Ganondorf. Goodbye Diablo.

#15: Tommy Vercetti vs. Crono
The two losses Vercetti had were by pretty bad margins. Crono's gonna break that record.

#16: Mario vs. Ness
Even without the bad picture, this has SFF written all over it. Mario wins with at least 70% of the vote.
