Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 205

I don't think Luigi has a chance against Tifa, afterall he did get punked by Squall in 2k3.

And Tifa's game, FF VII, is a much bigger force in this site than FF VIII, Squall's game.

I think this match helps prove what I've been saying since Frog/Snake: Pics have a serious effect on matches. KOS-MOS didn't get the hot Anime girl picture, she got her "inferior" design. Also, she doesn't have massive TJF helping her. I think this is KOS-MOS's true value, not her previous values.

I wouldn't be surprised if she took a pretty big fall, but she should still be recognizable even without it. Albedo really pointed towards nobody really caring about Xenosaga.

For the record, I still don't believe that pics can make such a huge difference.

Remember, we're not talking about advertising here, the casuals are already sold to each of their favorites.

All this contest does is ask them who it is.

If you don't believe pics can make a big difference, explain Frog/Snake, or Sonic/Dante, or CATS exceeding expectations with a face pic, or even this match.

Tifa v. Sonic is Rd. 3, right? Meaning Sprite Round traditionally? Sonic wins if it's sprite round, Luigi wins if his match is sprites.

I'm sure there will be extreme cases where pics DO matter, like CATS, where 90% of his supporters probably has never even played Zero Wing.
So getting a Zero Wing pic vs. his online-fad pic will make a significant difference.

Other examples include pics so bad to the point of being unrecognizable (melting Snake), or pics that fans of that char has never seen before (Kerrigan).

But as long as the pics are decent, they won't make much difference in matches involving well known chars.

In today's match, however, both chars are recognizable, so the anomaly must have been caused by some other factor/variable.

I'll ask again: With Luigi doubling KOS-MOS, what does this say about Squall, if anything? I'm assuming KOS-MOS suffered a small decrease from 2004-2005, as there is no other explanation. <_<;

Fantastic performance by Luigi here, especially since I believe this has more to do with him increasing than KOS-MOS decreasing. After today, one thing is clear: if Tifa still destroys him, Sonic is a goner.

We won't know until the end of this contest, there has been too many anomalies in this contest thanks to last year's massive SFF fest.

This is clearly all KOS-MOS' fault. Never mind the fact that she either increased last contest, or stayed constant for two years, if Link SFF'd Samus. Never mind the fact that using a static Luigi puts her 2.5% under Crash Bandicoot, whom she beat with 62%, in one of the top 10 biggest first round bracket upsets, with a mere 42% bracket backing. Never mind that we've never had a non-fodder character be hurt by a new game (in fact, Dante was right around KOS-MOS' level before DMC2). Never mind that Luigi is doing a cool 10% better than Ryu did. Never mind each and every one of my points I made in a five page essay examining the chain of events that led Luigi to be underrated by the XS. All KOS-MOS dropping, here.

But yesterday? All Tifa, man. She's clearly Noble Nine material after one match, and will probably win the main bracket. It's impossible for Vyse to fall after two years of being constant. He's had nothing come out since then! No new game to hurt him! And, of course, it's utterly impossible for him to rank around Laharl, whom he beat with 60% and 67% of the brackets backing him. All Tifa.

Nope, 70% is asking for too much. I will be ecstatic if he finishes above 68%, however. That would put him right between Mario and Crono in the unadjusted 2004 X-Sts.

I'm-a Luigi! I'm-a gonna win!

No, it's I'm-a Luigi! Number one!

HaRRicH: Yoshi will MURDER Laharl.
Heh, and now watch Yoshi get almost exactly the projected amount. Remember Mega Man vs. Tidus, and then the next day Zero beat Vercetti by almost exactly what the 2K3 stats suggested?

Ya know, I've got a wild theory: TJF seems to multiply a character's strength by 1.33 or around there (with some exceptions).

Tina vs. Gordon, for instance. Tina has a face picture against Aeris, so her extrapolated ranking is 14.13%. She beat Gordon Freeman, who's at around 15% on BL. Therefore, Tina's strength with TJF is close to 19%. 33% increase for her, there.

Today's match suggests that KOS-MOS gets about a 33% increase from TJF.

It seems fairly reasonable with Rikku...Take the TJF away from Rikku and she goes from 28.34% to 21.25%.

It doesn't work quite as well with Yuna...hm, but maybe people just hate her or don't find her as attractive.

As for Tifa...if you use her value based off of Vyse, that puts her at 43.80% on BL. Take away 25% of that, and Tifa's at 32.85%, about the level of Aeris.

Taking away TJF from 2K2/2K3 Lara Croft puts her at around Crash's level.

I never said it was all KOS-MOS, RPGuy. I do believe that Luigi did have some sort of increase, but this is simply ridiculous if either one of them is static. If it's a static KOS-MOS, Luigi shoots right past Squall, getting damn close to Mario. I think the best explanation is that pics do make a difference.

Wario and Luigi are the two greatest Mario characters.

More like Yoshi and Bowser. >.>

And really, I think Luigi is just benefitting from the casuals going. "Mario's brother vs. some blue-haired chick, *votes Luigi". I mean, Luigi was definitely underrated because he faced a beefed up Squall in 2003, and Yoshi in 2004.

Summary: KOS-MOS is bombing because she's too cult, while Luigi benefits big because he is easily recognized. It shouldn't help him against Tifa though, because she's just more popular.

It's kinda like how Pac-Man does decent in these. He might not be liked too much, but stick him against someone not too popular and he'll do good.

Summary: KOS-MOS is bombing because she's too cult, while Luigi benefits big because he is easily recognized. It shouldn't help him against Tifa though, because she's just more popular.

Why didn't that help Ryu, then? He's as well known as Luigi is. And KOS beat Crash...he's not exactly cult, either.

If that were the case, he'd have beaten Squall in 2003 en route to giving Samus a tough match.

Ryu is NOT as recognizable and well-known as Luigi, Mario's brother. I'm not saying that he's overperforming all because of it, but it is helping him quite a bit here.

Crash is just weak and unloved here. You can be popular, but that doesn't mean you're going to be strong or liked.

???

I seriously doubt you could find more than 1,000 people who visit GameFAQs and don't know who Ryu is. Well, I mean, I know you aren't going to, but if you tried.

Luigi vs. Squall this year. Who wins?

Again, I'd gladly kill a squeenix exec for Luigi to win this one, and I think he'd make it close this year. Before I say "KHF is wearing off" I want to ask if Tifa and Vincent were in KH. If they're not, I say KHF is wearing off, and Luigi might win.

Since Chaos Divsion's coming to a close, here are my thoughts...

Most Impressive: Tifa Lockheart
Cloud beat Vyse with 81.41% of the vote last year. Tifa beat Vyse this year with 78.07% of the vote, practically almost equal to the FF7 lead character. The question is no longer can she hang against Luigi, the question NOW is can she hang with Sonic?

Honorable Mention: Luigi
Despite his fate in the second round, Luigi put a hurtin' on KOS MOS in today's match, doubling her votes. Knowing that this is the same KOS MOS that got around 42% on Ryu, this means something. But, the green plumber two years ago got thumped by Squall in round 2, so his fate's been sealed with a loss to Tifa.

Biggest Letdown: KOS MOS
After getting 42% on Ryu in round 1 last year, you'd think she'd be able to hang with Luigi (I sure did...).

Honorable Mentions: BOTH Kratos Aurion and Diablo
Kratos A. proved to be equal to the likes Ridley and Kefka and weaker than M. Bison. Diablo doesn't gain much from a 56% victory against a ToS character, since ToS characters aren't that strong in these contests. Just look at Lloyd/Wesker for further proof. Diablo got around 35% on Ganondorf in Spring, and Sonic's stronger than he is. Look for the blue blur to get the same, if not better against the devil himself.

Only on GameFAQs can Kuja lose to a hand, Wesker lose to a clown, and Ocelot lose to a turtle.

I bet I could find over 10,000.

I don't think I've ever met a male around my age who doesn't know what Street Fighter is... How you could claim to find 10,000 people who come to a site dedicated to games that don't know who Ryu is, I don't know.
