Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 204
From: Lopen | Posted: 8/15/2005 12:56:32 AM | Message Detail
Character strength has little to do with potency with particular times of day. Luigi lost a large chunk of the vote in the day against Ratchet of all characters.

Ah, but you fail to realize that Luigi and Ratchet both benefit highly from the day time kiddie vote, whereas KOS-MOS would not, in this case.
---
Do you earnestly believe I'm arguing for Luigi to be at 42.5%?
From: Adept_Of_Aiur | Posted: 8/15/2005 12:56:46 AM | Message Detail
But didn't you just say it'd make sense for Ratchet's best time to be during the day? Why wouldn't it be the same for Jak? They're from the same genre, released on the same platform, and are constantly compared to one another.

I might be wrong, but I think Ratchet & Clank is a more popular series in general.

There's no logical reason she'd be "fading" any more in 2k4 than she was in 2k3 or 2k2

Obviously there was, as people expected it and were right (though off on the degree).

Just because speculations exist doesn't mean they have any merit.

Science is in large part about testing hypotheses...if you have a hypothesis, which is then confirmed by observation, then that means more than after-the-fact explanations of observations.

If a certain group of people successfully predicted an event to happen, you would trust their logic over that of people who failed to predict it; or people who said nothing beforehand and try to explain it afterwards.

Sadly, that's not correct. As great as R&C is, it's easily overshadowed in sales by the Jak series.

Ah, but you fail to realize that Luigi and Ratchet both benefit highly from the day time kiddie vote, whereas KOS-MOS would not, in this case.

And Albedo would be one of the last characters you'd expect to benefit from the kiddy vote (har har, get it? He's a pedophile!), and he took off a lot from Bison's percentage during the day. Granted, SF isn't exactly notorious for doing well with the day vote, but Luigi hasn't shown any signs of being good with it either.

I think that Luigi can maintain his percentage here. KOS-MOS isn't someone that fits the general "increases during the day" profile. There are exceptions to that profile of course, but KOS-MOS only held Ryu even from about this point on, while Luigi did gain on Yoshi. I don't see Luigi dropping much from here, and he might even gain.

Though after writing the above I read Leonhart's point about Albedo, and that does have some merit.

At the same time, Ryu did a nice job in neutralizing his day vote loss against KOS-MOS last year. He lost one percent in the final twenty hours of the match.

If a certain group of people successfully predicted an event to happen, you would trust their logic over that of people who failed to predict it; or people who said nothing beforehand and try to explain it afterwards.

But how many other failed hypotheses does this board generate? There are so many random speculations that exist on this board, of course a somewhat popular one will become true once in a while. Simply stating that "Lara is fading", and then it being true is just not enough. There was no reason for it to be so. Lara's peak was well before 2003, and she rose from 2002-2003.

Damn... and I had a nice explanation as to why Albedo would win the kiddie vote against M. Bison... why'd you rain on my parade!

Uh, yeah. And the conditional probability is that the good ones are the ones that become true, and the bad ones don't.

Look man, do I really have to go into this? Clearly people had their analytical reasons for thinking she was dropping at the time, that's neither here nor there.

Yeah, but it would still be nice to have alive, regardless of the outcome. Myself, I never have considered extrapolated statistics in my selections; it is always straight from my gut, hence my three major upset picks, all located in the second round. Either way, at the very least, we will hopefully have a close match on our hands.

You do realize that my claim that Luigi would "dominate the day vote" was part of the number crunching to get him to 42.5%, so you were still arguing against a joke. I mean, I do think it's possible he'll get a little out of it, but not 3%. No, I'm not seeing that much, especially not at this high of a %age. (because the day vote tends to favor the person with the lower % by default in largely spread matches if there's no reasoning either way)

Uh, yeah. And the conditional probability is that the good ones are the ones that become true, and the bad ones don't.

However, the probability of theories with flawed logic becoming true is also very present when so many theories exist. I'd love to see the logic as to why Lara would be falling. I have a feeling it was more based on the ever present Tomb Raider hate on this board than anything, regardless of the "reasons". However, I'll drop this because we're not going to get anywhere.

Though I don't think his other posts were jokes, really. I think he believes them.

Well I tried to make them have some sort of logic, flawed or otherwise, so that you'd only catch it if you were reading the sig. But if you think that my posts were serious, despite my sig saying otherwise, more power to you.

Now everything I said relating to Lara/Vyse, yes I do believe that.

I'm goin' to bed, but I do think we're forgetting something here: unless I have my facts mixed up, Xenogears/Xenosaga was never released in Europe. This is Europe-time in the polls. Luigi has a strong night/board-vote and has a rep to drop during the day. By all means, KOS-MOS should make this noticably more respectable through-out the day; I'm pushin' for 43%, though 41% or so may be more likely.

Gone to bed, g-nite ya'll.

I don't know if KOS-MOS will be able to gain a good 5% throughout the rest of the match. During the last 22 hours of the poll against Ryu, she only gained a little more than 1%. Granted, it's easier to increase when your percentage is lower, but I still think it's asking too much of her.

It's 11.12 in Italy/Germany (central europe) at the moment. So it's 10-12 around Europe. I think that this is the strongest point of the so called "european vote" and Kos-Mos is suffering for this.
