Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 204

Tifa's strength... it's unreal.

Assuming Vyse stays constant, and Tifa ends up with 78%, Tifa's value would be right around Samus' value.

But once again, I'd rather wait until her match with Luigi before jumping full force on the Tifa bandwagon.

But as of right now, I'd consider Tifa to be the slight favorite over Sonic.

So basically, Tifa will lose all her umm... picture advantage because of her being a sprite, while Sonic will still get a kickass sprite of his own, correct?

I'd love it if they used Sonic's idle sprite for the match. Who in their right mind would not vote Sonic then? He'd beat you.

Hmmm... it may be a bit off-topic regarding the current discussion, but where did we get the notion that 2K2 Link = 2K3 Link?

Least Squares.

I'd like to see Least Squares on that done again discounting the North Division and adjusting for the WDF.

Well from the last time I played FF7 I believe all of Tifa's "sprite" pictures features her ta-tas as a main feature. She's probably only loose that vote if it was just a head pic.

Didn't think of that. Assuming Tifa performs around the 43%BL area against against Luigi, I don't think it will be enough for Sonic to pull a win.

Let me remind you guys that we're talking about Tifa here, and that she's from FF VII.

As long as Ceej doesn't put someone else's picture in her place, everyone will still know who she is.

And looking good won't help Sonic by much, if at all, as recognizability has never been a problem for him.

Unless you're banking on nostalgia, a factor I consider to be unimportant.

Ok... somebody want to clue me in on a few things.

1) Why did Kefka get, like, 3k votes taken away?
2) How the hell did Knuckles win?
3) Why isn't the poll instant-update anymore?

Thank you, and the Carribean, and 18 year old girls, kick ass.

I don't see why Sonic's sprite would matter much, he had in SMW v S2 and got killed.

1) Why did Kefka get, like, 3k votes taken away?

Kefka got around 1800 votes removed due to a user named George Romero using proxies to cheat for him all day. The user got banned (and became an instant legend), the votes were removed, and George Romero claimed he had cheated in other matches before, but most don't believe him.

2) How the hell did Knuckles win?

I guess everyone just overrated Magus to all hell. We all got served.

3) Why isn't the poll instant-update anymore?

Due to George Romero and the whole Kefka/Vercetti business.

1. Someone get caught vote-stuffing for Kefka, so the votes that he stuffed were taken away.
2. Lots of reason, the main point is that Magus' performance against Link in 2k3 was a fluke, plus most likely he's been dropping in popularity ever since.
3. To discourage cheaters like that guy who cheated for Kefka in Kefka vs. Vercetti, just so they can't see the results of their treachery on the spot.

I'd like to see Least Squares on that done again discounting the North Division and adjusting for the WDF.

WDF only exists because Link 2k3 is set to equal Link 2k2. If you have Link 2k3 > Link 2k2, WDF disappears but you probsbly end up with other problems.

I see a lot of people comparing Tifa to Samus.

People seem to have inaccurate memories.

http://www.sc2k5.com/drupal/node/8?fields=2&sort=pollid&type=DESC

Against Lara, the average prediction was Samus with 76.47%. She got 82.39%. Against Fisher, the average prediction was 75.29%. She got 80.97%. Now, if people were all of a sudden expecting Samus=Cloud, they would've expected her to beat Sonic like Cloud did. But the average prediction vs. Sonic was Samus with 57.09%; she got 57.51%. And in Samus vs. Cloud, the average prediction for Samus was 40.30%; she got 40.99%.

Clearly there was no overestimation of Samus. People's expectations pegged her fairly accurately after those two matches. There was a good buzz in Samus being strong after those first two matches, but I'd say this was mostly confirmation of her strength—remember that many weren't convinced of her placing in the stats before (they couldn't see Samus being around Mario's level). Few seriously thought Samus was actually near Cloud (I don't recall anyone seriously voicing that opinion actually).

Just like few think Tifa is really near Cloud. Why would you anyway?

These people comparing Tifa's performance with Samus' early performances also conveniently forget the other obvious parallel, in that Samus beat up on Sonic. And Tifa might do the same.

Actually, her performance against Sora pretty much confirmed in everyone's minds that she wasn't beating Cloud.

I've got a feeling that Luigi is going to overperform here, though for some reason I didn't act on it with a higher Oracle prediction.

I think KOS-MOS might've dropped a couple points; and I think Luigi might be underrated by a couple of points.

And I don't think this pic of KOS-MOS utilizes her top "assets".

What are we expecting in terms of relative strengths in board/early night/day/2nd night vote between Luigi and KOS-MOS?

Actually, her performance against Sora pretty much confirmed in everyone's minds that she wasn't beating Cloud.

Ah, I skipped a match.

But she was expected to get 67.57% in that match, and got 65.85%. Even if you assume that she did get 67.57%, and that people thus would linearly adjust their picks of Samus vs. Cloud upwards, the prediction for Samus vs. Cloud only goes up to about 42.44%. That's a loose calculation, but clearly even before Samus vs. Sora she wouldn't have been expected to beat Cloud.

Luigi should jump out big, lose a big chunk with the day vote, and it should be fairly even toward the end. Basically, if KOS-MOS wins, she's likely going to have to do it in come-from-behind fashion.

Well, I think the difference between what Samus did and what Tifa's doing here is that what Tifa's doing against Vyse doesn't project her to beat Cloud and Link with 60%, so people were more likely to assume it was just a drop in Lara and Sam. This is way above what people expected for Tifa but still somewhat reasonable as she's still below Cloud and Sephy.

But what we're discussing is expectations. People are trying to say that people are overestimating Tifa, and that they did the same with Samus. When in fact Samus wasn't really overestimated much after Lara/Fisher, if at all.

I doubt that in the end Tifa is being overestimated either. She's the favorite over Sonic now, but she should be. She's not assured victory over Sonic; but her being the favorite makes sense (at the moment; conceivably, she could flop against Luigi).
