Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 203

Exactly. Not even year-to-year variation can account for that. Oh, and Tina's ginormous assets weren't even showing in the match pic to boot.

Do YOU think Tifa can break 80% on Tina? Well, as soon as the men are done fapping to the match pic, anyway.

Well at the very least, this match has convinced me to play through FF7 to see what the big deal is. Last time I played it was years ago, and I didn't even bother getting past the first disc because the story got relatively boring. Maybe I'll like it more now. Either that or I'll be equally confused at why people consider it the greatest game ever.

And with that, I'm off.

No, it's obvious that she's a good deal stronger, I just don't think she'll beat crono, and might even fall at the blue bomber. Well I'm actually gone now. I need to see if there's a reason for FF7 being so well liked, or if it's just as overrated as I've always thought after playing it the first time.

Haha, nice. I'm hoping for Tifa to beat Sonic, Mega Man, and Crono before losing to Samus.

As for Tifa/Sonic, the only argument that people seem to be able to put forward in Sonic's favor is "WHOAMG HE CNA B RECOGNIZD TJFA CANT". Remember, people, this is FFVII we're talking about. Anyone who has played the first hour or so of FFVII knows who Tifa is and has already seen her primary appeal.

While I don't think standard year-to-year variation can account for *much*, I don't think the jump from 2k2 to 2k3 is exactly 'standard' variation, especially when compared to the early rounds of 2k2 (going off this same idea, Tina beating Gordon handily). It's a lot, but we really don't have that much to go off of in 2k3 for Aeris comparatively. She SFF's Sora to hell and back, blows out MC (who we still don't have the greatest of beads on thanks to Frog), and then scores 46% on a supposedly dropped Sonic. The fact that just one of these matches going screwy can mess up the stats considerably, ESPECIALLY in later rounds, can provide a lot of surprise when we get hit with unexpected results.

Well, today's is still better than Sephin Park, at any rate.

And I'm not saying Tifa will win the main bracket, or even get to the finals. But today's result favors her a whole lot over Sonic and the everlasting question mark that is Megaman.

At least we'll be ready for it.

And although I like Sonic a lot, I won't shed a tear. Sonic's fandom is among the most annoying in all of gaming. It combines the overblown passion of FF7 and the in-your-face aggressivity of Earthbound.

1. Cloud
2. Link
3. Sephy
4. Tifa
5. Vincent

Interchange Link/Sephy and Tifa/Vincent as appropriate.

I also don't understand why we have to think it had to be Link rising from 2k3 in 2k4, and not everyone else falling. C'mon, I've already made it obvious that I'm behind the theory that we're going to see characters around their 2k3 levels this year. What makes you think this would be any different?

Last year we were talking about characters returning to their 2002 level. Most evidence points to that being dead wrong.

Games being *announced* boosting a character, of all things, really never made much sense to me in the first place. MGS4 was announced recently, too, do you expect Snake to boost from that?

And even if that *did* boost Link, don't you think we're far enough away from that announcement to see him fall back to base levels again?

Sephiroth seems to have made it clear he is NOT on par with Link in 2004. What in the world makes you think he's going to boost up enough to match him now. Link has already increased -- the idea that everyone decreased is just foolish -- so he would have to get back to that 2003 value and then some to match Link.

The only reason I can even see him increasing from the previous year is because of Advent Children. But I'm not expecting something like that to happen.

True, but not only did I not believe that, but one being false does not inherently mean that the other possibility is false as well. I can understand why many people think it's far-fetched, but that's just what I believe.

Oh, and if anything, FF7 shouldn't just boost from AC, but from the plethora of spinoffs announced as well, not to mention the PS3 tech demo and other goodies. That is, if we're supposed to buy Link rose from the TP announcement.

MGS4 is an entirely different ballgame from TP. Everyone bashed Wind Wakers cel shaded look and said Zelda needed to be realistic. Then Nintendo announced the amazing looking TP at E3 and it became the most wanted game period. Did you even see message boards the day TP was announced? It was insane.

Yeah, Link stayed the same, and 63 other characters decreased. That sure is a lot more plausible.

Only Link's main competition really needed to decrease, and we saw a LOT of increasing/decreasing across the board. Mega Man's entire division looks to be completely overrated at this point, Sonic apparently bounced back to 2k2, all sorts of things.

Oh, and if anything, FF7 shouldn't just boost from AC, but from the plethora of spinoffs announced as well, not to mention the PS3 tech demo and other goodies. That is, if we're supposed to buy Link rose from the TP announcement.

The many spin-offs of Final Fantasy VII don't even begin to compare to Twilight Princess. I find it obvious that TP was not the sole contributor to that increase, but those that believe it was aren't completely out there. The other Final Fantasy VII titles that have been announced are very small in the amount of hype or popularity they have. None of them are even worth noting with the exception of Dirge of Cerberus, which focuses entirely around Vincent.

The best case one could make is the PS3 tech demo that was shown at E3. Other than that, you cannot even begin to compare those other games to Twilight Princess. It's just way too far ahead of those to even compete. At best, you have existing fans already happy about the Final Fantasy VII spin-offs, potentially people who are upset. With Twilight Princess, you have pretty much every kind of gamer looking forward to it, Zelda fan or not.
