Summer 2005 Contest - 19/21 points
Current Match Prediction: Sarah Kerrigan vs. Vincent Valentine

I already made my prediction in the last topic, but I'll post it again just in case:

Vincent will double Kerrigan, if not more.

Reasons?

1. Kerrigan's game is not called "Sarah Kerrigan".

2. People don't play StarCraft for the single player. No, really, they don't. Many StarCraft players only know Kerrigan as "that scary chick on the box".

3. Kerrigan may be StarCraft, but Vincent is FFVII. You know, the most popular game on the site? And he's the fan favorite.

Because Ryu is an established icon. A new release would have to be a blockbuster to make him move up, not a re-release of his most popular game.

And for the record, Dante isn't a near elite in the first place. He's a midcarder.

He's talking about a character having a significant release to put him in elite territory as far as popularity goes.

My argument is even IF a character has a significant release, he STILL has to DISPLACE the most popular characters to be more popular than them. If a character like Sonic or Samus is still more popular than Dante, it doesn't matter how much more popular Dante has gotten.

I gave this example before. If Dante suddenly became much more popular and he then is able to beat, let's say Lara Croft, much worse than he is supposed to. Okay. Dante looks to be much stronger. But lets say he faces Samus and Samus STILL beats him like she is supposed to.

Wait? What happened? Dante ISN'T stronger. It must mean that Lara Croft dropped in popularity! It's a major flaw in our logic. We think that if a character increases in popularity, it must mean that the character will gain votes over EVERY other character. It doesn't work like that.

You can like a character much more than you do other lesser characters, but it still doesn't mean that character will displace your favorites. It works in reverse... You may not like a character AS much, but you still like him better than other characters. I think we've seen this happen before with characters like Tidus and Lara Croft taking big drops.

yeah, "elite" is tough to define. it seems you've got your noble nine, you've got your midcarders, and everyone inbetween is "elite". Aeris, Ryu, Bowser, Ganon, maybe Zelda, maybe Squall, Zero, Auron/Tidus.. those are your "elites". Snake is probably also "elite" now.
