I don't think that's true. I bought the game the week it came out and most people were interested in the multiplayer. Most of the hype before the release came from War2 players who were into multiplayer.

I could certainly be wrong, as I was 7 or 8 at the time, and wasn't even interested in PC games, but from what I've read now about them, the single player was popular.

Many call him the fan-favorite, but he's really not. Who's the most popular character within the CT fanbase? Magus. FFVI? Kefka. FFIX? Vivi. FFX? Auron. But FFVII? That's Cloud, easily. Hell, even Sephiroth is more popular within FFVII's fanbase than Vincent is. I think that this would be a disadvantage for him in the contest.
