Precisely. The reason it fits fairly well in many cases is that the fans aren't as wide spread in their voting patterns as they could be I'd suspect. You do have a lot of people who clearly prefer Nintendo or Square characters, or particular ones. The manner in which people vote may be easier to generalize because "fanboys" fit into categories more easily than your average voters.

I haven't studied math or statistics in a while, but isn't proportionality more likely to hold when preference for characters is independent? When characters' popularity is not independent, you're much more likely to get scenarios like (extreme example):

Observed data:
50% like A > C
50% like B > C

Actual preferences:
40% like A > B > C
10% like B > A > C
40% like C > A > B
10% like C > B > A

A and B each go 50/50 with C, but A beats B 80/20. This is what we know as SFF, and given the observed data, it's statistically quite unlikely for those to be the actual preferences if the popularity of A, B, and C are independent.

I'm afraid you're mistaken. The days all follow a very similar pattern, regardless of outside conditions. Hell, the "kiddie" characters even pick up at the time that school would let out even in the middle of summer. The patterns aren't exact, but they rarely if ever break their normal cycle for anything.
