Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 181
From: Slowflake | Posted: 8/4/2005 5:55:58 AM | Message Detail
This... is priceless. Chief being projected to get murdered by DK next round? That would be hilarious... except we all know it's because of CATS' face pic. With just a name and the eggplant pic, no one would recognize him as the AYB guy. With the pic that made it all around the 'net, on the other hand... well, let's just say a static Master Chief would have him break the VFL.

As long as he keeps the face pic... why not?

If CJayC comes back to full body pics next round, I suggest he sticks CATS in a TV like he did for Kane in 2002.

well, let's just say a static Master Chief would have him break the VFL.

Adjusted, or unadjusted? Either way it would be funny as hell if CATS was strong enough to be considered worthy of making a comeback for more then just an ever continuing fad. Based off of Ansem in the spring contest what would is gannon projected to get on CATS? I'm wondering, because if it's around 70% then MC is definitely stronger considering CATS avoided the eggplant pic again.

That much? Ouch. We might need to wait until Crono vs. MC to make any solid conclusions on CATS. The data on donkey kong isn't exactly reliable given that vivi vs. zelda makes seph vs. vivi look very unreliable.

And to answer that question, I didn't bother giving MC the benefit of the doubt and knocked a few points off of him. Either way, CATS is still doing FAR better than he was against Ansem through Ganondorf. Of course, MC still has lots of time to rise, and he'll keep on doing so until the poll closes...

That's reasonable. A 6% increase is ridiculous considering there was no reason for him to increase. I was just wondering because adjusted MC always seemed way to high to me. He might be at that level now, or possibly a bit higher after halo 2, but I think the frog/mc/crash/liquid snake foursome was overrated last year.

After watching the morning vote taking effect (and it isn't even in full swing yet given it's what, 5 or 6 on the west coast?) MC well probably break 70%. He's just really, really weak early on. His weakness early on is comparible to old school squares weakness in the daytime, and is possibly even worse.

2% in three hours isn't jawdropping impressive, but it's not a bad start. He'll be taking off hugely with the day vote. That's when anything xbox tends to shine, and when cats just sort of rolls over and dies.

I also think that Master Chief dropping so much makes no sense. He was the star of the most hyped game of all time last year. If any game would boost a character, Halo 2 would be it.

It's not hard to see: in the villain contest and in this one, CATS got his vastly more recognizable face pic and did way better. Pics make a difference for characters like CATS.

Morning guys.

HA! CATS was able to hold a bit during the night. Looks like Chief will finally pass 65% by time I've posted. Still, very impressive for CATS. Looks like Face CATS could actually be a decent competitor, or DK > MC

Fine, I'll stop with that.

Now I'll just sit back and watch this ugly morning vote go.

As for the pic factor...as I've stated before, when you change the way things look, it affects things. That's just marketing. Marketing is all about creativity, testing/experimenting, and statistics.

Until we have actual data (a split test with multiple match pics used randomly for the same match), it is unscientific to make a blanket statement that "pics don't matter." This simply can't be said. And the little concrete data we do seem to have is for CATS, where his pic obviously does matter (and this should've been apparent to all before this match took place).

Anyway, I really have no idea why we're rehashing this whole pic factor discussion again. There's nothing new that needs to be said here.

Basing pic factor off of one weak character is a flawed way to do something. It's looking at an extreme case to justify a mean result. I agree with your last statement and arrive at my same conclusion.

About the pic factor.

CATS won't be as high as SpC2k5 because of his picture
CATS won't be as low as SC2k4 because of his picture
Ansem = High Fodder
CATS = Low Fodder
Therefore many people don't know them and use pictures.
Master Chief = Halo/Xbox guy
Meaning the average voter has heard of or liked Master Chief and will more likely vote for him over the picture vote.

It makes plenty of sense. Outside of the social boards, most GameFAQers are the type who would go to camp. And the sterotypes who would vote for MC DEFINITELY go to camp.

I dunno; when I think of camp, I think of those 4-H camps where you stay from Monday through Friday without computers. I know that's not the same camp you're thinkin' of here, but that's probably always gonna give me that impression. What I don't like about that term more than anything is when the transition from after-camp to after-school should be made, should after-camp ever be used...and I think that'd be delving a bit too deep for the stretch here.

Well, most camps close 2 weeks before the end of August, so it would stop being after-camp around August 17th, and start being after school September 5th, which is when almost every school will have started.
