Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 180

Some of you guys really overestimate why a character is liked. I bet you I could find a hoard of people who like Cloud just for his limit breaks, or who like Sephiroth for his cool Neibelheim FMV. It doesn't take much to actually like a character...

So you're going with sword SFF then?

No, I'm not going with anything. I'm just refuting HaRRicH's argument in saying that Vivi possibly not getting SFF'd does NOT mean that Auron also would not. I still think they both did.

There are things in the FFX storyline that Auron could not and would not do, in particular toward the end of the game. He doesn't have the personality for it.

FFVII Spoilers

...Sephiroth is dead when the game starts?

Maybe I need to replay it XD

SPOILERS:

Technically, he is.

Cloud killed him by throwing him into a Mako stream.

If it wasn't for the Black Materia, he wouldn't even have a functional body.

No, they can't.
We may not know why, but there's always a reason.

Then kindly explain Snake's huge drop, especially considering he had the Twin Snakes ported to the 'Cube that year. Is there any logical reason for that? No. Did it happen? Absolutely.

Before you reply to any post, read it carefully.
As I already said above, we may not know why, but there's always a reason.
Just because we don't know what that reason is, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Again, there's only a handful of cases like that.
Most of the time, a char's jump or drop can be logically explained.

There is no logical reason whatsoever for Snake to have dropped, but we know he did. None whatsoever. You can say "There's a reason. We just don't know what it is," but there is no reason for it.

So, you're expecting Auron to jump out of the blue?
Or Ganon to drop out of the blue?

Have fun with Ganon vs. Auron then...

I'm not expecting anything of the sort. Auron can still win if they're close to the same strength. I was just saying that a character doesn't necessarily need a reason to increase or decrease.

For all we know, changes in the voter pool attribute more to increases or decreases than anything else, something we could never hope to predict.

Decline over time. IIRC, between 2k2 and 2k3 he had Substance on the PS2 and Xbox, which probably sold more than The Twin Snakes. Most characters do decline as they get older, other than RPG characters. Just look at the games contest, where the 8-bit division is weakest and 128 is strongest.

It doesn't really matter if character rose/fell for no reason or an unknown reason. We have no way to determine which situation is true and the bottom line is the character's strength changed and we don't know why.

That's true, but cases like that are rare.

So unless you think there's a reason to put Auron over Ganon, such an upset pick is reckless.

Which, to note for those who may have missed, I said I was playing devil's advocate with that one; I do think Auron got SFF'd. I just thought it should be mentioned that they were both supposedly SFF'd by the same opponent in consecutive rounds: Sephiroth, math's worst enemy.

There is no logical reason whatsoever for Snake to have dropped

Solid Snake had nothing out and Twin Snakes sold like dirt. Not to mention a potential influx of Nintendo fans and even Square fans may have set things off balance.

Are you relying on luck though when you picked Auron over Ganondorf? Seems like you are.

When two characters have evidence of being relatively close in strength, you need a little luck regardless of who you pick.

I'd put more stock into having a grasp on whose fanbases would support them more, how each character has responded in a close match, and how said character has performed against similar types of characters. :P

I would say luck only falls on the close matches that could have had a different outcome on any given day (Frog/Master Chief, LttP/Chrono Trigger, Ryu H./Jill).

When two characters have evidence of being relatively close in strength, you need a little luck regardless of who you pick.

The problems lies in gauging Auron. You cannot do so effectively using Cloud and Sephiroth. In fact, one's best bet in trying to gauge Auron is using Tails and Scorpion and assuming both of those characters remained constant throughout the years.
Bottom line: You cannot really gauge Auron's strength very well.

Focusing on Ganondorf, though, the King of Evil has more factors leaning his way as well, what with the Zelda collection, an impressive performance against Sephiroth, and an apparent Nintendo boost that we're seeing in the early matches in this contest.

Nicely said. Luck doesn't matter much in picking matches. Frog vs. Master Chief wouldn't be that hard a match to call now, though.

Hey, maybe Auron's increased since the past contest or two...Rikku and Yuna have been impressive. Obviously, FFX-2 is a major part of the strength of Rikku and Yuna; however, I think that also helps keep FFX fresh in people's minds, possibly helping Auron or Tidus.

It might help Tidus a tiny bit.

But it won't benefit Auron at all.

Meh...I also just remembered that FFX-2 came out before SC2K4. Oops. Well, if Auron/Tails and Auron/Scorpion are any indiciation Auron might've increased just a tad between '03 and '04. I don't think he'll grow again, unless the voting pool this year happens to like Auron better.

Bowser's expected to receive 59.88% against Yuna based on Sp2K5 stats. If Ryu = Bowser, Rikku beats Yuna with 54.71% as of right now.
